feat(vertex): resolve each API key's project with project "auto" - #7296
Conversation
An express-mode Vertex API key belongs to one Google Cloud project, but the projectless express endpoint routes to a default region where global-only models such as gemini-4-argon return 404. lidge-jun#7266 fixed this for a single configured provider.project, which cannot serve an apiKeyPool whose keys belong to different projects: every key but one then gets 403. provider.project: "auto" resolves the project of the key each request actually sends. One countTokens call for a nonexistent model to the fixed aiplatform.googleapis.com authority returns a NOT_FOUND that names projects/<number>/; that number is cached per key digest (64-entry LRU), concurrent first requests share one probe, and the request then takes the ordinary project endpoint and per-project replay namespace. A probe that does not reveal a project is not cached and that request uses express, so Google's own 401/403/429 still drives key-pool failover. ADC rejects "auto". Configurations without "auto" are unchanged.

Correctness/resource review at 9403064. Per-key endpoint selection needs to preserve the request transport/cancellation and bounded-body contracts. The two regressions below are on the new discovery path; no live Vertex requests or credential probes were run. The existing 404-message experiment is not a documented stable discovery/no-billing contract, so please also retain dated primary evidence and the explicit-auto opt-in limitation. Functional hosted CI is not present in the current-head rollup I inspected; bot/hygiene success alone is not that coverage.

Re-review at 02d4026: The probe uses the selected egress/HTTP-version context, bounded 4096-byte decoding/deadlines, and per-waiter cancellation with last-waiter abort. Both original transport/cancellation and unbounded-body findings are addressed.
Independent capped Linux/Bun 1.4.3 focused validation: 20 passed, 0 failed in isolated homes. I am withdrawing review 5563137459 as superseded. The opt-in undocumented Vertex discovery/no-billing capability and destination review remain separate from these regression fixes; no live key probe was sent.
Current-head required CI/readiness remain outstanding. No workflow approval, live runtime change, new scan or merge was performed.
Specific original blocker(s) fixed at 02d4026; 20 focused tests independently pass. Separate current-head CI, readiness and required owner/boundary review remain outstanding; this withdrawal is not whole-PR approval.

Scope shared probes to the selected egress route
When two provider entries share an API key but use different proxy or provider.fetch routes, overlapping first requests both use this digest-only inflight entry, so only the first entry's fetchImpl is executed and the second entry's explicit egress policy is silently ignored for the authenticated probe. Keep the resolved-project cache per key if desired, but scope in-flight coalescing by the provider/egress identity so one provider cannot send another provider's probe through its proxy or custom transport.

Validate Vertex inputs before probing with the API key
With project: "auto" and an uncached key, this call sends x-goog-api-key to Google before vertexInferenceUrl validates the caller-controlled model ID and configured location on line 1239. Inputs such as model a/b or location attacker.example/capture, which tests/adapters/google/gcp-adc.test.ts:212-229 expects to be rejected before any credential is attached, now cause an authenticated countTokens request first (and repeat it after lookup failures); validate the model path and location before starting discovery.

Add the project probe to the egress inventory
This introduces a distinct provider-egress request path, but structure/INDEX.md:172 maps src/adapters/ changes to structure/transports/inventory.md, whose per-provider egress table at lines 155-176 still omits Vertex project discovery. Add the probe's honored/refused routing contract to that inventory; updating only structure/providers/google.md leaves the mapped transport contract incomplete.

Summary
A Vertex key pool whose express-mode API keys belong to different Google Cloud projects cannot reach global-only models such as
gemini-4-argontoday. The projectless express endpoint routes to a default region and returns 404. #7266 fixed this for one configuredprovider.project, but with a pool, every key outside that project then gets 403.This adds an explicit opt-in:
provider.project: "auto"resolves the project of the key each request actually sends.countTokenscall for a nonexistent model goes to the fixedaiplatform.googleapis.comauthority (manual redirects, 10 s timeout). Google's NOT_FOUND namesprojects/<number>/locations/..., and that number is the project. The probe runs no model.locationdefaulting toglobal."auto". GCP project ids are at least 6 characters, so"auto"cannot collide with a real one. Configurations without"auto"are byte-identical to today.Example:
Before:
gemini-4-argonreturns 404 for every key (express), or 403 for keys outside the configured project. After: each key reaches/v1/projects/<its number>/locations/global/....Design notes
buildRequest. It follows the global proxy environment, but like the token exchange it does not take a per-providerproxy.Verification
bun test tests/adapters/google/google-vertex-key-project.test.ts: 20 pass, 0 fail (including bounded 4 KiB 404 body ceiling, oversized continuous stream cancellation, stalled 404 body timeout, invalid UTF-8 rejection, IncomingMeta.providerFetch and provider.proxy egress routing, abort-before-probe, and coalesced waiter cancellation without cancelling sibling waiters). Coverage: each pool key resolves its own project; regional location; a single probe per key, including concurrent first requests; 401/403/429/503 and network failures fall back to express without caching; rotation to another key resolves that key's project; per-project replay keys; an explicit project or no project never probes; ADC rejects"auto". With thegoogle.tschange reverted, 8 of these fail.bun teston the Vertex suites (gcp-adc,gcp-sa-adapter,google-vertex-stream,google-vertex-http,google-vertex-thought-signature,vertex-catalog, and the new file): 142 pass, 0 fail.OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1 bun test tests/adapters/google/: 834 pass, 4 fail. These are the same four Antigravity roster/discovery cases fix(vertex): honor project and location for API-key inference #7266 documents as failing identically on unmodified dev when the directory runs in one process.bun test tests/ci-workflows/ tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts: 1574 pass, 7 fail. A cleanorigin/devworktree (8640c2f) shows the identical 7 failures on this machine (pinned test-runner and spawnSync cases).bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan: exit 0.gemini-4-argonreturned 200 for each, and each request went to its ownprojects/<number>/locations/globalendpoint.bun run testwas not run locally because of the runner-environment failures above. That coverage is left to CI.Checklist
