Summary

Process names no longer grant Desktop recovery authority. Before ocx ensure starts a CLI runtime, supported bundled Linux/macOS and protected Debian installations verify a live native recovery endpoint against operating-system process and socket evidence.

  • A read-only loopback listener survives proxy-child restarts. Fresh nonce replies are bracketed by executable, process-birth, socket, instance and home checks; no generated locator file grants authority.
  • Recovery credit follows accepted startup work, confirmed owned-runtime supervision or an actual recovery reservation. Stop, Quit and update drain revoke it immediately. Unknown or conflicting evidence is refused, while the existing bounded wait for a fresh durable Windows claim is preserved.
  • Four readers have a three-second connection budget. Accept errors retain the listener and use a 50 ms backoff, with stop checks between retries.
  • Startup regressions, test registration and the recovery contracts/guides are updated together.

Verification

Current head: 4d166d05d65e732de20dc08e9496a48461b382f1, tree 40f7fc987573514a4edbde18035ede0d805d9a4e. A normal merge 7c4c6eda preserves the published c41ccb2a history and includes dev@736fa5087c0b807cc2c7fd54ebae1548e6b2d4cb; the follow-up changes 13 implementation, test and contract files from that merged baseline.

Focused local validation on Linux, with Bun 1.4.4 and Rust 1.88:

bun run typecheck
bun run structure:check
bun run privacy:scan
bun scripts/file-size-ratchet.ts
bun scripts/test.ts tests/service/service-desktop-recovery.test.ts tests/cli/cli-ensure-desktop-cold-start.test.ts tests/clients/desktop-startup-surface.test.ts
bun run test:changed
  • The explicit focused command and test:changed each selected the same three files: 89 passed / 1 skipped / 0 failed, 543 assertions. This includes a real Linux native producer and compiled bundled CLI. The skipped case requires native macOS plutil; it is not counted as executed platform coverage.
  • The actual production recovery-activity module passes 10 Rust tests with warnings denied. Restoring the earlier wanted-only predicate produces 7 failures in the same cases. Exact producer preimages fail the wiring oracle; the reservation-order preimage also fails the additional duplicate-scheduler check. These source checks bind the production transitions, without claiming a native thread-interleaving test.
  • The macOS path-reader regressions distinguish a real reaped child from a real live process, permission denial and unavailable observations. The original errno branch fails the reaped-child regression; the portable macOS subset passes 9 tests / 55 assertions, included in the combined count above. This does not reproduce native macOS errno corruption.
  • Typecheck, structure, privacy, file-size, Rust formatting and whitespace checks passed. Independent review covered both fixes and the corrected reservation-under-lock ordering, with no remaining blocker.
  • Full local repository and Cargo/Tauri suites were impractical in this container and are left to hosted CI under the documented resource exception. Unchanged locale documents and earlier passing layout checks were not rerun.

Current hosted validation

Cross-platform CI 40465653892 completed successfully for exact head 4d166d05d65e732de20dc08e9496a48461b382f1, automatic PR attempt 1: 15 successful jobs / 9 policy or selection skips / 0 failures.

  • The changes log selected full (ci:full label); all four full Ubuntu test shards passed, along with gates, structure, docs build, npm-global Ubuntu and Docker smoke.
  • The Linux Desktop job passed all 21 steps, including Rust formatting, Clippy and tests; AppImage and Debian builds; packaged sidecar keyring; packaged-shell E2E; and report upload.
  • Catalog async contracts passed. Service lifecycle passed its Linux systemd job; macOS and Windows lifecycle jobs were skipped. Latest target, hygiene and label checks also passed.
  • The actual checkout was 17b2bb8581bfba93cd1de3c724dd2f03d22bf281, with parents dev@736fa508 and this head. Its tree is 40f7fc987573514a4edbde18035ede0d805d9a4e, identical to the locally validated and published candidate.
  • Native Windows/macOS jobs and the standalone keyring matrix were skipped. The executed packaged Linux keyring step is separate. The CI notice still calls for the separate native lane before merge; this automatic PR run is not a lane=all dispatch.

Both actionable upstream threads have fixes, regression evidence and replies, and are resolved. The Ready-triggered CodeRabbit analysis (check 122067526399) completed successfully at 07:40:00 UTC on this exact head, with no new inline findings; this was an actual completed analysis, separate from the earlier Draft skip. The current head is conflict-free and contains the inspected dev. No manual native dispatch or prior-run retry was requested.

Earlier validation

CI 40450989633 succeeded for predecessor c41ccb2a: 15 successful jobs / 9 policy skips, including four Ubuntu shards and the Linux Desktop Rust, AppImage/Debian, packaged-keyring and packaged-shell checks. Its tested merge tree was 3c9bc576d2284167dadfe1a18bde00149a11f095. That evidence describes the predecessor; it does not validate this follow-up's new activity state.

Limits and remaining acceptance

Installed signed macOS/Windows acceptance remains unverified. Positive unclaimed recovery on Windows remains unsupported and fails closed; separate Bun/npm entrypoints without an installation anchor remain outside this recovery proof. The three-second reader budget bounds one occupancy interval, not repeated local interference. Explicit maintainer security/platform acceptance is still required before merge.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.
  • Applicable upstream checks completed on the submitted head.
  • Explicit maintainer security/platform acceptance.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The CLI now checks for verified Desktop recovery before starting its own proxy. It waits for confirmed recovery and reports an error when a matching Desktop has stopped its proxy or recovery cannot be verified.
    • Recovery decisions account for platform and installation limits. Where verification is unsupported, a recorded ownership claim and running app can allow a bounded wait.
    • On macOS, the CLI can reopen Desktop from a valid login registration when the recorded ownership claim matches.
    • Desktop recovery status now reflects startup and scheduled recovery activity.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the Desktop guide with recovery behavior, platform limitations, and guidance when activation cannot be confirmed.

Integrate dev 9e48f78 while preserving both test-registration sets and the existing PR history.

Reduce the native reader deadline to three seconds, exercise idle-slot release with real Rust sockets, and run the compiled CLI probe asynchronously so the foreign-connection assertion can observe traffic. Keep the documented Windows and separate-shim recovery limitations explicit.

Validation: 79 changed-mode Bun tests plus 126 complementary tests; 3 Rust tests; typecheck, structure, privacy, formatting and 593-page docs build passed.
Integrate dev 2606f6f while preserving the existing PR history and both test-layout registrations.

Keep the same listening socket after accept errors, pace every error by 50 ms, and retain existing stop/wakeup, four-reader and three-second reader limits. Correct registration authority, per-process listener limits and structure-doc scope.

Verification: 8 native Rust tests; final-tree 38 producer/consumer and startup tests with 249 assertions; 29 layout tests with 579 assertions; official typecheck, structure and whitespace passed. Independent merge/tree review found no blocker. Hosted current-head full Ubuntu and desktop/package checks remain required.

Walkthrough

The Desktop now publishes bounded loopback recovery evidence. The CLI checks that evidence against platform-specific executable, process, and socket observations before deciding whether to wait for Desktop, refuse startup, or start a CLI proxy. Tests and documentation cover the protocol, decisions, and platform limits.

Changes: Desktop recovery

Application setup registers recovery presence before startup. The loopback listener accepts bounded challenge requests and reports the resolved home and eligible supervision state. Startup and supervisor events update generation-bound recovery activity and reservations. Tests cover listener behavior and startup wiring.
Executable, process, and socket discovery
src/service/desktop-recovery-process.ts, tests/service/service-desktop-recovery.test.ts
Platform-specific discovery checks candidate image identity, process identity, listener ports, and accepted-connection ownership. Tests cover platform-specific observations and parsing.

Track accepted startup generations and supervisor reservations separately from general runtime intent. Acquire reservations before publishing pending work, retain confirmed owned-child supervision, and revoke credit on terminal launch failure or guest-only attachment.

Classify failed macOS image-path reads with a separate signal-zero process observation; only ESRCH permits skipping a PID. Preserve unknown failures and scan cleanup.

Add focused regression coverage and update the recovery contracts.

Maintainer integration into dev (MAINTAINERS.md dev-only maintainer integration; not a self-approval). Security-boundary change: merged only after independent security review rounds with zero blocking findings on the exact head.

  • Head merged: 1716d1e4bfbdb8c9e4bbc040e283768b12c730cd.
  • Exact-head CI: PR CI run 40521498470 (pull_request) success; cross-platform lane=all run 40521519123 (workflow_dispatch on l8/7797-lane-all, same SHA) success, including Windows, macOS and desktop shell jobs.
  • Independent security review (GPT-6.1 Sol): round 1 PASS (0 findings) at 4d166d05d; round 2 PASS (0) at 85baafad3 (dev merge; all nine security files byte-identical to round 1); round 3 PASS (0) at 1716d1e4b (structure map only: desktop/src-tauri/src/startup.rs and supervisor.rs added to desktop-recovery.md, answering the CodeRabbit thread).
  • Local on the exact head: cli-ensure-desktop-cold-start, desktop-startup-surface, service-desktop-recovery plus layout/ratchet/structure guards 120 pass / 8 skip / 0 fail; typecheck, structure:check and privacy:scan pass. Re-checked just before merge: the head merges cleanly with current dev and the guards plus recovery suites pass on that merge (146 pass / 8 skip / 0 fail; typecheck pass).
  • Earlier review findings on this PR (activity tracking, fresh ESRCH handling) are addressed; no change requests are outstanding.
  • Not established here: installed macOS/Linux end-to-end acceptance beyond CI, and closure of [Bug][Windows]: desktop 2.92.0 stuck at taking-over when an npm package runtime runs under the Task Scheduler service; ocx stop / service stop do not free the port #7771.
