tapAnthropicSseForLog repeatedly normalizes and searches the entire unfinished SSE frame after each upstream read. A large Anthropic event delivered in small fragments therefore delays the proxy while it revisits already inspected text: for a frame of N characters and C-character fragments, cumulative normalization work is Theta(N^2 / C).
Normalize and search only newly decoded text, retain split CR/LF boundaries, and coalesce small fragments into 4096-code-unit groups before assembling completed frames. Normalization/scanning and fragment assembly are now linear in the input size. Original passthrough bytes, usage extraction, terminal-tail repair, body caps, and cancellation are preserved.
Add deterministic normalization-work and fragment-coalescing regressions plus CR/LF/CRLF, split UTF-8, reset, cap, and cancellation coverage. Register the new test in both layout maps and update the owning Claude structure document.
Local synthetic probe on Windows / Bun 1.4.4, a 4 MiB padded JSON SSE event delivered in 1 KiB reads: normalization input 8,596,226,182 -> 4,194,438 characters, elapsed time 9,245 -> 41 ms. These are local tap measurements, not provider inference or GUI latency. The regression test asserts an operation budget instead of a wall-clock threshold.
Duplicate search covered open and closed issues/PRs using the function name, file name, SSE rescanning/quadratic work, and Anthropic normalization. Related merged PR #7541 optimizes openai-chat.ts and sse-payload-rewrite.ts; it leaves this separate native Anthropic log tap unchanged. Open #7374 touches terminal/error accounting in the same function, but does not replace the cumulative normalization loop. This PR is independently implemented and addresses that remaining path.
Verification
Maintainer carry: ordinary merge 1954fe0bb brings origin/devb16bc0978b2eef1799f38042084809b5a0cd11bf into the original contributor branch. Final head 156cb7ac9549e008d4b9b7a210a583199d5730bd also strengthens cumulative-copy regression coverage in response to the subsequent review; the production source is unchanged from the original contribution.
Bun 1.4.4; frozen root dependencies installed; OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1; only one Bun test process at a time.
bun test tests/claude-integration/messages-shared-sse.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts --timeout 30000 — 51 pass / 0 fail, including all 13 incremental SSE tests, framing/UTF-8, normalization budget, coalescing, terminal tails, byte cap and cancellation.
Subsequent performance-review coverage: the 128 KiB one-byte fixture totals joined characters and enforces a linear copying budget. A deliberately quadratic negative control failed: 0 pass / 1 fail, 2,425,225 copied characters over the 524,860 bound. Production source was restored before committing. Final four-file command above: 51 pass / 0 fail, 713 assertions; typecheck and structure rechecked successfully.
bun run typecheck — pass, 2,228 files.
bun run structure:index, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, git diff --check — pass.
Both previous failed checks (hygiene, run 40712860161, and enforce-target, run 40712859880) reported only missing_coauthor_credit for perf(chat): avoid rescanning fragmented SSE carry #7497/perf(sse): avoid flattening fragmented block carry #7498. Both were authored by Platinum-Scripts (commits use the name StreamClash Dev). Those related SSE optimizations concern openai-chat.ts and sse-payload-rewrite.ts, while this patch implements the native Anthropic tap separately. The trailer below also credits that preceding optimization work, without claiming shared runtime code.
Full-suite exception: this is a shared Windows host carrying several contributor PRs in parallel; the lane explicitly limits testing to focused files. bun run test and broad test:changed were not run. Broader endpoint integration and cross-platform validation remain for repository CI. Historical author-reported endpoint failures were not rerun or represented as passing here. No new behavior fix was made in this carry, so no new red-to-green claim is made for it.
Checklist
Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
Docs or release notes were updated when needed; the existing Claude structure contract remains accurate.
Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. No credential, workflow, release or dependency changes.
Review readiness checklist
This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:
Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.
I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).
I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.
Improved handling of streamed messages split across chunks or using varied line endings. Responses continue to pass through unchanged, while usage and completion details are recorded reliably, including for large messages and when a client cancels.
Documentation
Clarified how streamed message handling works and documented its behavior for incomplete frames and line endings.
Normalize and scan only newly decoded text, retain split CR/LF boundaries, and coalesce tiny fragments before joining completed frames. Add deterministic work-budget and framing regressions while preserving passthrough bytes and terminal accounting.
tapAnthropicSseForLog now assembles SSE frames from text fragments and scans newly decoded text. Tests cover fragmented input, line endings, tail handling, body caps, and cancellation. The test-layout mappings include the new test in the claude-integration shard.
Changes: Anthropic SSE parsing
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Fragment assembly and incremental scanning src/server/messages-shared.ts, tests/claude-integration/messages-shared-sse.test.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json
The parser stores pending text in fragments, coalesces it at 4096 characters, and scans newly decoded text while preserving line-ending boundaries across chunks. Tests check passthrough output, usage parsing, and measured work for large and one-byte fragments. The new test is registered in the Claude integration shard.
Tail handling and stream finalization src/server/messages-shared.ts, tests/claude-integration/messages-shared-sse.test.ts, structure/clients/claude-desktop.md
Tail flushing assembles remaining fragments, held line endings, and decoder output. Tests cover line-ending forms, terminal events, resets, body caps, and client cancellation. The documentation describes the parsing behavior and test coverage.
The new documentation may mislead maintainers about terminal-event handling at normal stream end; narrow the claim before merging.

Explanation
The title "perf(anthropic): scan SSE inspection fragments incrementally" matches the main change. The PR changes the Anthropic SSE logging tap (tapAnthropicSseForLog in src/server/messages-shared.ts) to scan only newly decoded text and assemble frames from fragments. The title is specific, concise, and uses a conventional commit prefix. It does not cover the test and documentation additions, which is expected.

Measure cumulative joined characters across 128 KiB of one-byte fragments.
The negative control rebuilding accumulated groups fails the linear bound.

Limit the terminal-tail claim to paths that flush the tail.
This documentation was added by the PR, but the normal EOF branch at src/server/messages-shared.ts:255-262 still finalizes without calling flushTail(). A stream that ends with an unterminated terminal event can therefore close without terminal recognition or delimiter repair. The parser behavior is pre-existing, so narrow the documentation rather than reporting a new parser defect.
Suggested fix
- A terminal found only in that unterminated tail gets its blank line restored, because an SSE parser drops an event that EOF cuts off.+ When tail flushing handles a reset, stall, or byte-cap overflow, a terminal found only in that unterminated tail gets its blank line restored.

Narrow the terminal-tail delimiter-repair claim in the documentation to cases
where tail flushing handles a reset, stall, or byte-cap overflow; do not imply
that normal EOF flushes or recognizes an unterminated terminal event.

Reviewed complete five-file diff at ca87314bb6fdbb53a21ae092ac9e59155fad1a69, including the current parser/terminal behavior after intervening dev merges. Independent official Bun 1.4.4 run with matching frozen dependencies, private homes and enforced cgroups:
bun test --isolate tests/claude-integration/messages-shared-sse.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts -> 51 pass, 0 fail, 713 assertions.
bun check --no-script --noEmit -> no type errors in 2234 files.
The inspection normalizes/scans newly decoded text only, coalesces small fragments, and preserves the forwarded bytes. The operation-count tests cover both cumulative normalization and joined characters, not just array length or timing; CR/LF/CRLF, split UTF-8, terminal-tail repair, cap and cancellation controls passed. This is synthetic stream/CPU-work evidence, not a live Anthropic or GUI latency result.
Exact-head Cross-platform CI 40819365720 and the current required metadata checks are successful; the graph-only test job is intentionally skipped in favor of the selected full shards. Current review threads are resolved, and the head is 8 commits behind the fetched dev tip at this observation (within the documented gate tolerance). No remaining correctness finding from this scoped review.
Leaving COMMENT while the author's head-bound readiness/Draft state remains open. The full local suite was disproportionate under the shared-host caps; focused behavior/source-as-data checks were run and broader coverage is supplied by hosted CI. No provider inference, live config changes, workflow dispatch or Codex Security scan was performed.
Maintainer decision (lidge-jun merge lane): merging at exact head ca87314. the carry lane marked it ready; the maintainer lane then merged dev into it, resolving a semantic conflict in flushTail that keeps both the incremental scanner and dev clean-EOF verdicts. Locally 135/0 across passthrough, SSE and clean-EOF tests; Ingwannu reviewed the exact head with no correctness findings. That push reset the readiness checklist; this decision stands in for it. Required PR CI is green on this head, there are no unresolved review threads, and the dev lane=all batch 40831805734 is green. A local union simulation of this merge set on today's dev passes typecheck, structure, file-size and test-layout gates. Thank you, @0disoft.
