fix(start): prove an unbound non-loopback address absent by binding it (#8045) - #8046
With hostname set to a non-loopback bind address (e.g. the machine's Tailscale IP) and no proxy running, the fix(cli): recheck live ownership before journal recovery #7851 ownership check refused startup forever (Proxy ownership is unverified; startup refused): connecting to the machine's own non-loopback address with nothing listening can time out instead of being refused, and discoverLiveProxy reported that timeout as unknown.
Recovery discovery now binds the configured hostname:port once when such a probe misses. A successful bind proves no process owns the address, so the verdict becomes dead/absent. Any bind error (in use, address unavailable, no permission, timeout) leaves it unknown, so startup still refuses when ownership cannot be verified.
Scope is narrow: only the recovery path (an observer is present) and only for a specific non-loopback, non-wildcard bind. Loopback and wildcard binds and the identity-only callers are unchanged. bindProofFn is a test seam on LivenessIo.
Test plan
New tests/server/proxy-liveness-nonloopback-bind-proof.test.ts (3 pass): timeout + bindable => absent; timeout + not bindable => unknown; canBindAddress true for a free port, false while another listener holds it, false for port 0.
Verified on Windows 11 with the real code against a Tailscale-bound hub: free port => absent (previously unknown); live proxy => live; ocx restart now brings the proxy back.
Review fixes (5abe1850d): two new regressions for the unbracketed IPv6 socket address and the shared discovery deadline; the new test is registered in the layout inventory; structure/runtime.md records the recovery-only bind proof.
After merging current dev (head 14b858123): bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check pass; proxy-liveness*, cli-start-owner-* and the two test-layout guards give 281 pass, 0 fail.
Full suite not run locally (Windows, slow); the import-graph test changed job on CI covers the rest.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved startup recovery checks for non-loopback addresses. An inconclusive probe is treated as absent only when the address and port can be bound within the discovery deadline; otherwise, the result remains unknown and startup preserves existing state rather than assuming the endpoint is free.
Documentation
Updated the startup recovery guidance to describe when bind-based checks apply and how inconclusive results affect startup.
lidge-jun#8045)
A timed-out probe of a configured non-loopback bind (a Tailscale IP) with nothing listening
was reported unknown, so the lidge-jun#7851 ownership check refused startup forever. Bind the address
once: success proves no owner holds it, any bind error keeps the refusal.

Walkthrough
Recovery discovery can now use an exclusive bind check to resolve some unknown identity-probe verdicts for observed non-loopback addresses. The check is limited by the shared discovery deadline. Tests cover bind outcomes, IPv6 address normalization, and deadline handling.
Adds canBindAddress, which rejects invalid ports and attempts an exclusive bind. Tests cover an occupied port, the port after release, and port 0.
Apply bind proof within discovery src/server/proxy-liveness.ts, tests/server/proxy-liveness-nonloopback-bind-proof.test.ts, structure/runtime.md
Adds a bind-proof callback for observed recovery probes. For an unknown verdict on a non-loopback, non-wildcard address, a successful bind changes the verdict to dead; a failed or late bind leaves it unknown. The proof uses the remaining discovery deadline and receives an unbracketed IPv6 socket address.

The recovery fix has a narrow DNS-hostname ownership gap that can permit another proxy to start. Restricting bind proofs to IP literals would preserve conservative hostname recovery; otherwise, merging requires accepting this bounded risk.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "fix(start): prove an unbound non-loopback address absent by binding it (#8045)" names the main change: recovery discovery now binds a non-loopback address whose probe timed out, and a successful bind marks it absent. The changeset (canBindAddress in src/server/proxy-liveness.ts, the bind-proof tests, and the structure/runtime.md update) matches this title. The title is specific and does not use vague terms. Its length (78 characters, 11 words) is acceptable, and the issue number adds traceability. The PR objectives cite PR #8046 while the title cites #8045, which is a numbering inconsistency, but it does not affect whether the title matches the change.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #8045 is closed and completed. It provides historical context only, so no active linked-issue coding requirements apply. The reported implementation in src/server/proxy-liveness.ts addresses that historical failure with a recovery-only bind proof for non-loopback, non-wildcard addresses. The reported tests cover timeout, bind failure, IPv6 normalization, deadline handling, and port occupancy.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes remain within the stated proxy-liveness recovery scope. src/server/proxy-liveness.ts adds canBindAddress and applies it only to observed recovery probes. tests/server/proxy-liveness-nonloopback-bind-proof.test.ts verifies the new behavior. The layout files register that test, and structure/runtime.md documents the recovery behavior. These changes support the implementation and do not show an unrelated feature.

src/server/proxy-liveness.ts:568: probeHostname() produces URL authority spelling for IPv6, e.g. [fd7a:115c:a1e0::1234], but the new bind proof passes that spelling to node:net.listen({ host }). Socket hostnames need the unbracketed address. An empty non-loopback IPv6 bind therefore stays unknown and startup still refuses. I independently reproduced the seam receiving brackets for an injected non-loopback IPv6 configuration; a real disposable IPv6-loopback listener control confirms canBindAddress("::1", freePort) succeeds while canBindAddress("[::1]", freePort) is false. Use the normalized raw bind hostname for the socket proof, retaining brackets only for HTTP URLs; add a non-loopback IPv6 regression.
The two focused scratch cases produced 1 pass / 1 expected failure on Bun 1.4.4 in private homes under CPU75%/1536MiB/no-swap/64-task limits. This does not establish Tailscale behavior or Windows acceptance.
The new proxy-liveness-nonloopback-bind-proof.test.ts also needs entries in both the explicit test-layout inventory and expected fixture. structure/runtime.md currently says timeouts remain unknown and only the existing refusal/foreign-identity evidence permits absence; update that owning lifecycle contract with the new recovery-only bind proof, its specific-address scope and failure preservation. Review the shared deadline/cleanup contract as well. No change to live startup records or service configuration was made.
…line (lidge-jun#8045)
Address review on lidge-jun#8046: the socket proof received probeHostname's
bracketed URL spelling, so an IPv6 non-loopback bind stayed unknown;
the proof could also outlast io.deadlineAt and flip unknown to absent.
Strip brackets for the socket, cap the proof by the remaining budget and
discard a late result. Register the test in the layout inventory and
record the recovery-only bind proof in structure/runtime.md.
@Ingwannu thanks for the review. 5abe1850d addresses it; could you take another look when you have time?
IPv6 spelling: the bind proof now gets the raw socket address. Brackets are stripped, and probeHostname's bracketed form is kept only for HTTP URLs. New regression: a non-loopback IPv6 config, both bare and bracketed, reaches the proof as fd7a:115c:a1e0::1234.
Deadline (CodeRabbit): the proof is skipped once deadlineAt is spent. Its timeout is capped by the remaining budget, and a result that arrives after the deadline is discarded, so the endpoint stays unknown. A regression covers this.
Test layout:proxy-liveness-nonloopback-bind-proof.test.ts is registered in scripts/test-layout/layout-start-ownership.json and tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json.
Owning contract:structure/runtime.md now records the bind proof. It is recovery-only and limited to specific non-loopback addresses. It shares the discovery deadline, and any bind error or timeout leaves the endpoint unknown. Early discovery never binds.
Verification: the 9 related files (proxy-liveness*, cli-start-owner-*, test-layout guards) give 281 pass / 0 fail on Windows with Bun 1.4.2. bun run typecheck and bun run structure:check are green. I did not run the full suite. The branch is still behind dev; I'll update it before ticking readiness.
Limit the bind proof to IP literals. A DNS name can resolve to an address the proof never tests.
For a DNS hostname, canBindAddress tests only the address that the resolver returns first. The HTTP probe can reach a different address, or the owner can sit on an address that DNS no longer returns first. A successful bind then marks the endpoint dead. Startup treats an owner with no readable PID record as absent and starts another proxy. Limit the bind proof to IP literals so hostnames keep the "unknown" result.

Re-reviewed at 14b8581238042890c1b2057ccf00ffe8fd54e505. Thanks — the four items from my previous review are resolved: bindProof strips the URL brackets before the socket call (src/server/proxy-liveness.ts:566) with a bare/bracketed IPv6 regression, the test is registered in layout-start-ownership.json and test-layout-expected.json, structure/runtime.md records the recovery-only bind proof, and the proof is skipped/capped/discarded against deadlineAt (:563-569) with a regression.
One remaining blocker, matching the still-open CodeRabbit thread at src/server/proxy-liveness.ts:580:
The bind proof also runs for DNS hostnames. config.hostname accepts any string and Bun.serve binds names, so a MagicDNS/LAN name reaches canBindAddress(name, port), which resolves once and binds only the first returned address. The existing absence rule (isConnectionRefused) requires a unanimous refusal across every attempted address; the bind proof is weaker than that. With a name that resolves to several addresses (or has changed since the owner bound), an alive-but-slow owner, and no live PID/runtime evidence, a successful bind on an address the owner does not hold turns unknown into dead. observeProxyLiveness then returns absent, and recoverStartJournalAfterOwnerRecheck deletes the PID record and reconciles the journal while an owner is running — the outcome #7851 guards against. The PR description and structure/runtime.md already scope this to "a Tailscale or LAN IP". Please gate the proof on isIP(socketHost) !== 0 (from node:net) so names stay unknown, and add a regression asserting that a DNS hostname never reaches bindProofFn and the observation stays unknown.
Non-blocking:
tests/server/proxy-liveness-nonloopback-bind-proof.test.ts:56-66 holds the port with node:net; the real owner binds through Bun.serve (src/server/index.ts:669). Holding the port with Bun.serve({ hostname: "127.0.0.1", port: 0 }) would show the exclusive-bind proof is refused against the listener the proxy actually uses.
structure/runtime.md states that early (non-observer) discovery never binds; a one-case test calling findLiveProxy with a spy bindProofFn that must stay uncalled would pin it.
Hosted CI (gates / test changed) has not run on this head yet: the fork workflow is awaiting maintainer approval. I'll start it after the gate above is pushed, rather than now.
