Fixes #626.

toPem() and pemToDer() check a CERTIFICATE's data and nothing else. Given base64 and "PRIVATE KEY", toPem() writes that label around whatever the data is. If the data is a PKCS #1 key, a public key, or no key at all, the caller gets a PEM that Node can't read, and finds out later inside Node's crypto as DECODER routines::unsupported.

This checks private-key data the way certificate data is already checked. The data of a PRIVATE KEY or RSA PRIVATE KEY message goes to crypto.createPrivateKey() under that label, and the value is refused with Invalid PEM format. if Node can't read it.

Why now: node-saml 5.2 needs it to fix node-saml/node-saml#445. A key stored as one line of base64 doesn't say whether it is PKCS #8 or PKCS #1, so node-saml has to try PRIVATE KEY and then RSA PRIVATE KEY, and this check is what tells it which one fits. node-saml/node-saml#447 is blocked on it.

The two questions #626 left open

Both are answered the narrow way, so that this stays what node-saml needs and no more.

  • Which labels: PRIVATE KEY and RSA PRIVATE KEY only. EC PRIVATE KEY, PUBLIC KEY and the rest keep the base64 rules alone.
  • Text around a message: unchanged. toPem() still refuses it, so node-saml keeps passing a PEM decryptionPvk to Node as given.

What changes for callers

Every value this refuses is one that toPem() returns today and Node then rejects, the same kind of case #603 started refusing for certificates in 6.3.0. Nothing that worked stops working:

Value, and the label it carries master This PR
PKCS #8 data, PRIVATE KEY returned; Node reads it same
PKCS #1 data, RSA PRIVATE KEY returned; Node reads it same
PKCS #8 data, RSA PRIVATE KEY, on Node 26 returned; Node reads it same
PKCS #8 data, RSA PRIVATE KEY, on Node 16 returned; Node refuses it Invalid PEM format.
EC key as PKCS #8, PRIVATE KEY returned; Node reads it same
PKCS #1 data, PRIVATE KEY (base64, DER Buffer, or PEM) returned; Node refuses it Invalid PEM format.
a public key, PRIVATE KEY returned; Node refuses it Invalid PEM format.
random base64, PRIVATE KEY returned; Node refuses it Invalid PEM format.
random base64, EC PRIVATE KEY returned; Node refuses it same: that label isn't checked

pemToDer() refuses the same messages. pemCertificates() is unchanged: it reads certificates out of a value and still passes over a key beside them, mislabelled or not.

PKCS #8 data under RSA PRIVATE KEY is Node's call, not this library's rule, and the answer depends on the Node version: Node 26 reads it and Node 16 does not. The check asks Node, so it accepts what that Node accepts, and no ASN.1 is parsed here. The README says so.

Tests

test/utils-tests.spec.ts, through toPem() and pemToDer(), with PEM, bare base64 and a DER Buffer each:

The five refusal tests fail on master, each because the value is returned.

Checks

  • npm run build && npm test && npm run lint pass (557 tests), on Node 26.9.0.
  • The table above is master and this branch run with the same script on Node 26.9.0. The Node 16 row is the same script on Node 16.20.2.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • PEM formatting and conversion now validate PRIVATE KEY and RSA PRIVATE KEY contents against their labels. Mismatched labels, public-key data, and invalid key contents are rejected as invalid PEM.
    • Valid private keys retain their DER data when converted.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified private-key label validation and noted that Node-version differences can affect acceptance of PKCS #8 data labeled RSA PRIVATE KEY.
    • Documented trying PRIVATE KEY before RSA PRIVATE KEY for bare base64 keys to keep the output label consistent across supported Node versions.

A PRIVATE KEY or RSA PRIVATE KEY message whose data Node cannot read as
a private key under that label is refused with 'Invalid PEM format.',
as a CERTIFICATE that is no certificate already is. Base64 does not say
whether a key is PKCS #8 or PKCS #1, so this is what tells a caller
which label bare base64 needs.

📝 Walkthrough

PEM formatting and DER conversion now validate PRIVATE KEY and RSA PRIVATE KEY data with Node. Tests and documentation cover accepted key formats and rejection of invalid or mismatched data.

Changes: PEM validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Private-key validation
src/utils.ts
Shared validation dispatches certificate and supported private-key labels to Node parsers. PEM formatting uses this validation.

Explanation

For #626, src/utils.ts validates PRIVATE KEY and RSA PRIVATE KEY data with createPrivateKey() in both PEM formatting and DER conversion. test/utils-tests.spec.ts covers accepted and rejected key data. For #445, the linked requirement includes single-line Base64 support for decryptionPvk, an error that names decryptionPvk, and tests for encrypted assertions and encrypted NameIDs. The reviewed changes only modify xml-crypto utilities, tests, and documentation. They do not implement or test the consuming node-saml option path.
