Every T3 server loaded @cursor/sdk at startup, because packages/provider-cursor/src/server/sdk.ts required it at module load. That costs about 19 MB of heap on servers that never run Cursor. With no Cursor API key, the status check returns early and never needs the SDK, but the server still paid for it.

sdk.ts now exports loadCursorSdk(), which requires the SDK on first call (Node caches it after that). The CursorSdk service exposes load() instead of Agent and createAgentPlatform. The catalog probes, sign-in flow, agent runner, and text generation call it when they actually talk to Cursor. Building layers and running the startup status check no longer load the SDK.

Verification:

  • vp test run in packages/provider-cursor: 117 passing, including a new probe test that building the CursorSdk layer does not load the SDK and the first load() does.
  • Started the server from source against a throwaway home dir, with a module hook that reports when @cursor/sdk loads. On main, the SDK loads at startup and heap after GC is 170.9 MB. On this branch, it never loads and heap is 151.5 MB.

Note: #18154 and #18700 add more top-level work to sdk.ts. Whichever lands second will need its addition moved inside the loader.

Done with Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code.

Every server required @cursor/sdk at startup, costing ~19 MB of heap
even when Cursor never runs.

📝 Walkthrough

The Cursor SDK now loads through loader functions when server operations need SDK exports. The CursorSdk service exposes separate loaders for the SDK and SQLite package. Runtime consumers and tests use these loaders instead of direct SDK exports.

Changes: Cursor SDK loading

Layer / File(s) Summary
SDK loader and service contract
packages/provider-cursor/src/server/sdk.ts, packages/provider-cursor/src/server/CursorSdk.ts, packages/provider-cursor/src/server/CursorSdk.test.ts
The loader functions load the SDK and SQLite package when called. The CursorSdk service exposes both functions. A test checks that the SDK is unloaded when the layer is built and loaded after load() is called.
Agent runtime consumers
packages/provider-cursor/src/server/CursorAgentSdk.ts, packages/provider-cursor/src/server/textGeneration.ts, packages/provider-cursor/src/server/CursorAgentSdk.test.ts, packages/provider-cursor/src/server/textGeneration.test.ts
The agent runner loads SDK exports for sandbox priming and agent opening. Text generation loads agent and SQLite exports when setting up a request. Test mocks use the loader functions.
Authentication and catalog consumers
packages/provider-cursor/src/server/auth.ts, packages/provider-cursor/src/server/CursorSdkCatalog.ts, packages/provider-cursor/src/server/auth.test.ts, packages/provider-cursor/src/server/driver.test.ts, packages/provider-cursor/src/server/CursorSdkCatalog.test.ts, scripts/lib/cursor-sdk-packaging.test.ts
Login and catalog probes obtain SDK exports through loadCursorSdk(). Catalog load failures are wrapped as non-authentication failures. Related tests use the loader and cover catalog load failure.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 0391e

The lazy-loading change is mergeable after normal checks; no unresolved issue was established.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0391e

The change is narrowly scoped. Reviewed credential checks, sandbox decisions, and resource cleanup remain in place, with no observed expansion of access or authority. Initialization failures now occur during live operations; packaged-runtime behavior was not independently verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The reviewed change affects initialization within the hosting server process and its existing Cursor operations. It does not add a caller-controlled module selector or alter the authority passed to local agents. Existing unsandboxed execution means exposure must not be described as limited to the temporary working directory.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Credential admission remains closed during sign-in or sign-out. Login stages credentials in memory and checks active-flow identity before persistence. The outer exit handler returns the active flow to idle on failure, including a deferred loader failure.
  • observed — Unsandboxed agent opens still await best-effort sandbox-support priming before Agent.create or Agent.resume. Repeated priming calls share a Ref/Deferred gate, and the priming finalizer signals completion even when warming fails.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Text-generation execution remains inside instance-owned access scopes when provided. Sign-out can drain those scopes, and interruption handling cancels active runs or closes late-created agents without changing store ownership.

the catch mapper from throwing and allows the probe to return
CursorSdkCatalogError.

A failed lazy load threw synchronously and became a defect. The catalog
also re-loaded the SDK inside its catch mapper, so a load failure
escaped the status check's fallback.
Main's SQLite agent store (pingdotgg#19310) loaded @cursor/sdk/sqlite at
import, ~6 MB heap. Load it lazily via CursorSdk.loadSqlite so
servers that never run Cursor skip it.

Thanks for investigating Cursor startup memory. This PR defers SDK imports to save startup heap, with no demonstrated crash or broken provider flow. Under Read this first, right now we are only taking focused bug fixes from outside contributors. Please preserve the memory findings in an issue or Ideas discussion and obtain scope approval before requesting reconsideration.
