ApprovabilityVerdict: Not approved Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR changes the default branch used when new scheduled tasks create worktrees, affecting both web and mobile task creation and the value persisted on save. The change is focused, but the default-selection behavior warrants human review before merging. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

Problem
The scheduled task editors always pre-fill the base branch with
mainand fall back tomainwhen saving. That covers the web/desktop form (Settings → Scheduled Tasks) and the mobile editor. In a repo with nomain, locally or on origin (for example one whose default ismaster), a task created by hand fails every run withgit worktree add failed(fatal: invalid reference: main) unless the user notices the field and changes it.This is the editor half of #16183. #16215 fixes the same default for tasks agents create over MCP, but it does not touch these editors. Two related PRs make the failure easier to see: #18213 records a failed run as failed instead of succeeded, and #17794 makes the error say the ref is missing. This PR does not depend on any of them, and I would like to see all three merged.
Change
When no branch has been chosen, the editors keep
mainwherever the repo has it, as a local branch or asorigin/main. Only whenmainis missing do they fall back to origin's default branch (origin/HEAD), then the checked-out branch. If none of those resolve, mainremains the last resort, for example in a project that is not a Git repository. This follows the narrowed scope asked for on #16215 (comment). A repo where
mainalready works keeps it, even when origin's default is another branch. MCP-created and hand-created tasks therefore agree.@t3tools/client-runtime/scheduled-task-base-ref, used by both web and mobile so they cannot drift apart.mainby name, somainis found even when it sits past the first page in a large repo. Both only run while the workspace is "new worktree" and no branch has been chosen.baseRefin the draft stays empty until the user picks a branch, and the editor shows and saves the resolved value. A branch the user picks, or one already stored on a task, is kept unchanged.mainbefore the real branch is known. A finished empty or failed answer still saves with themainfallback.main.Scope and approval
A focused fix for the bug reported in #16183 ("Scheduled tasks that launch a fresh thread always branch from
mainand fail every run in repos without it"). Following the narrowed scope from #16215, nothing changes for repos that havemain. It changes no contract and no server behaviour.Verification
mainis kept when the repo has it (local ororigin/main), even if origin's default differs; the default branch is used when there is nomain; the checked-out branch is the next fallback; an empty ref list leaves the choice empty. Run together with the existing web and mobile draft tests:vp test run packages/client-runtime/src/scheduledTaskBaseRef.test.ts apps/web/src/components/settings/scheduledTasksSettings.logic.test.ts apps/mobile/src/features/settings/scheduledTaskDraft.test.tsgives 62 passed.vp run typecheckpasses inapps/web,apps/mobileandpackages/client-runtime.vp lintreports nothing in the changed files.migrate-dev-db --base-dir). The projectloadouthasorigin/HEAD → masterand nomainanywhere. New task shows "From origin/master". Saving a disabled task stored{"type":"worktree","baseRef":"master","startFromOrigin":true}. With the change stashed, the same dialog shows "From main".Not checked: the mobile editor on a simulator. The iOS dev client on current
mainuses iOS 27.2 SDK APIs (UIHingeInteraction, from #18654), and my Xcode 27.0 cannot build it. The mobile change uses the same helper and ref query as web, and typecheck andnode scripts/mobile-native-static-check.tscover it. On mobile, the form and the branch picker share one hook, so they always show the same branch.Made with Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code (via T3 Code).
