Verify Media Again After a ReEncode or DeInterlace Rewrite - #1142
Fixes three findings raised on the 3.23 promotion pull request #1140. The maintainer chose to fix the whole class before the promotion merges.
Problem
A re-encode or deinterlace rewrites the media but kept the Verified and BitrateExceeded flags of the media it replaced. On a later run Verify(true) then skipped the new media, and a stale BitrateExceeded stayed. This was already on main.
SidecarFile.Open() merged the whole seeded state back after Read() reset a stale sidecar to FileModified, restoring Verified onto media the sidecar hash says changed. Keep the Seeded State When a Renamed File Has a Sidecar #1121 introduced this.
SetRepairedState() can leave Repaired set without Verified after a bitrate tool error, which trips Debug.Assert(!Repaired) before the next repair in a debug build. Skip Repeat Conversions and Keep Bitrate State Current #1125 added this path.
Change
SidecarFile.VerifyStates names the verify results: Verified, VerifyFailed, RepairFailed, BitrateExceeded, and PostDecodeTimestamps.
ReEncode() and DeInterlace() clear them when they replace the file. The process pipeline runs these before VerifyAndRepair(), so the same run verifies the new media and measures its bitrate.
Open() drops them from the seed when the media differs from the sidecar.
Repaired stays as history. The !Repaired asserts before a repair are removed, and every site that sets VerifyFailed clears Repaired, so the assert in the VerifyFailed skip still holds.
RemoveClosedCaptions() keeps them. Removing the caption NAL units leaves the decoded frames unchanged, and the step can run again after VerifyAndRepair() in the repeat cleanup, so clearing there would cost a whole-file verify on every run.
FakeTools.ReadSidecarState replaces the per-class sidecar state readers.
ARCHITECTURE.md and HISTORY.md 3.23 describe the new behavior.
Tests
ReplaceOriginalTests seeds verify states before a successful DeInterlace() and ReEncode(), and asserts each flag is cleared. The ReEncode() cases assert the persisted sidecar too.
SidecarRenameStateTests seeds every verify flag over a stale sidecar and asserts Open() drops them.
The full suite passes locally.
Local review
Four strict passes ran before review. The third pass found that a SidecarPath() test helper duplicated SidecarFile.GetSidecarName(), fixed in 253d243, and the fourth pass found nothing. A fifth pass covered the fix for Qodo's DeInterlace test finding in 482fb69 and found nothing.
Pre-existing findings, not filed:
PlexCleanerTests/ToolChangeSenseTests.cs:83 (pre-existing, consolidation): reads the sidecar state inline instead of FakeTools.ReadSidecarState.
PlexCleanerTests/RenameCollisionTests.cs:253 (pre-existing, test coverage): the remux refresh fails without a MediaInfo fake, so the test does not assert the step result.
PlexCleanerTests/SidecarRenameStateTests.cs:108 (pre-existing, test coverage): no test calls the default Open() over a stale sidecar, so the modified = true forced update in SidecarFile.Open() is unpinned. Raised by CodeRabbit.
Declined on evidence: an extra whole-file caption or interlace scan can follow a rewrite that clears Verified, for an old sidecar or a QuickScan run. Setting ScannedCaptions or ScannedInterlace without a scan would record a scan that never ran, and the scan gives a correct result on the new media.
Closes on promotion: none. The findings are on #1140.
A rewrite kept the Verified and BitrateExceeded flags of the media it
replaced, so the new media was never stream verified and kept a stale
bitrate flag. A rename onto a stale sidecar also restored those flags
from the seeded state.
SidecarFile.VerifyStates names the verify results. ReEncode() and
DeInterlace() clear them when they replace the file, and Open() drops
them from the seed when the media differs from the sidecar.
A Repaired file can now be unverified, so the !Repaired asserts before
a repair are removed, and a VerifyFailed state clears Repaired.

RemoveClosedCaptions() rewrites the video stream, so it clears
SidecarFile.VerifyStates like ReEncode() and DeInterlace().
The tests name each verify flag explicitly, and the rewrite tests run
a successful refresh and assert the persisted sidecar state.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
RemoveClosedCaptions() can run again in the repeat cleanup after
VerifyAndRepair(), and on every run while a stream attribute still
reports captions. Clearing the verify state there costs a whole-file
verify each time, while removing the caption NAL units leaves the
decoded frames unchanged. So it keeps the verify state.
FakeTools.ReadSidecarState replaces the per-class sidecar readers.

The change clears verification flags when sidecar state belongs to different media and after re-encoding or deinterlacing. It also clears Repaired in verification-failure paths and adds tests for in-memory and persisted state.
SidecarFile.VerifyStates groups verification flags. Failed-verification paths clear Repaired, and assertions that required it to be unset are removed.
Merge state from stale sidecars PlexCleaner/SidecarFile.cs, PlexCleanerTests/FakeTools.cs, PlexCleanerTests/SidecarRenameStateTests.cs, ARCHITECTURE.md
When media differs from its sidecar, Open removes verification flags from caller-seeded state before merging. Tests check retained and cleared flags in memory and in the sidecar.
Clear verification state after media replacement PlexCleaner/ProcessFile.cs, PlexCleanerTests/ReplaceOriginalTests.cs, ARCHITECTURE.md, HISTORY.md
DeInterlace and ReEncode clear VerifyStates. Tests check resulting in-memory and sidecar states. The architecture documentation and release history describe the state changes.
The verification-state changes are mergeable with a bounded testing follow-up: add default-Open coverage to protect stale-sidecar metadata refresh.

High-Level Assessment
The following are alternative approaches to this PR:
1. Tie verify results to a media fingerprint
➕ Could invalidate results automatically when media content changes, including in future rewrite paths.
➖ Requires sidecar compatibility work and more complex rules for remuxes and caption removal.
Recommendation: Keep the targeted invalidation with a shared flag mask. It addresses the known replacement and stale-sidecar paths without making every media mutation trigger an expensive whole-file verification; a fingerprint scheme is worth considering only if more rewrite paths expose the same problem.

1. Deinterlace test passes after refresh fails✓ Resolved
Description
DeInterlace_ReplacesOriginalOnlyAfterLanguageRestore asserts the cleared in-memory flags but does
not assert that DeInterlace() succeeds or that the flags reach the sidecar. In its success case,
the test's unfaked MediaInfo refresh can return false after the file is replaced and the flags are
cleared, so the new assertion passes without exercising a completed refresh.
The test explicitly notes that the unfaked MediaInfo refresh fails and omits a result assertion,
while the production method sets the state before refresh and returns false if refresh fails.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
The deinterlace success case checks only in-memory state even though its media refresh fails, leaving the persisted state untested.
## Fix Focus Areas
- PlexCleanerTests/ReplaceOriginalTests.cs[125-146]
## Recommended Fix
Provide the fake tool data needed for the post-replacement refresh, assert that `DeInterlace()` returns true in the success case, and assert the expected flags in the persisted sidecar.

Tip of the day
💡 Did you know, you can show, collapse, or hide each part of a finding: code, evidence, and all
The success case now has the sample tool data, so DeInterlace()
finishes its refresh, and the test asserts its result and the
persisted sidecar state.

Answering Qodo comment-only finding (1): "1. Deinterlace test passes after refresh fails" at PlexCleanerTests/ReplaceOriginalTests.cs. Fixed in 482fb69: the success case completes the refresh and asserts the result and the persisted sidecar state.
This pull request ensures media is verified again after re-encoding or deinterlacing, prevents stale verification state from being restored, maintains repair-state consistency, and adds regression tests and documentation.
Changes:
Adds and clears grouped verification states when media is replaced or becomes stale.
Preserves repair history while preventing inconsistent verification failures.
Adds shared test helpers, regression coverage, and updated architecture and release documentation.

Two documentation nits: include tool changes in the described trigger and state-table behavior (1 vote each).
Open_SeededVerifyStatesOverStaleSidecar_DropsVerifyStates calls Open(true), so modified is already true when the stale-media block at PlexCleaner/SidecarFile.cs:242-246 runs. Removing modified = true from that block leaves this test passing. The test still covers the seeded &= ~VerifyStates line. No test calls the default Open() on stale media.
A persisted FileModified state matches the merged state after Verified is dropped. The sidecar is rewritten only through the forced update. This test exercises that path:

only still-valid issues, skip the rest with a brief reason, keep changes
minimal, and validate.
Review comment at @PlexCleanerTests/SidecarRenameStateTests.cs at line 108:
Add a test alongside Open_SeededVerifyStatesOverStaleSidecar that calls the
default Open() on stale media, without force. Seed the sidecar with
FileModified, set the in-memory state to Verified, then assert Open() succeeds,
the resulting state is FileModified, and the sidecar is rewritten.

Answering CodeRabbit review on 482fb69, nitpick (1): "Add a default Open() test for stale media" at PlexCleanerTests/SidecarRenameStateTests.cs:108. Listed in the body under "Pre-existing findings, not filed". The modified = true forced update on stale media predates this change, which only moved it inside the same block, and no test covered the default Open() on stale media before it either.
