Fixes #7096

Problem

In source-gen mode, a generic test method with several [Arguments] rows ran only the first row for each inferred type argument. [Arguments(1)] [Arguments(2)] [Arguments(3)] void SameType<T>(T value) produced one test instead of three. Reflection mode ran all of them.

Cause

TestMetadataGenerator.CollectConcreteInstantiations dedups instantiations by type combination (processedTypeCombinations). Each [Arguments] instantiation records the row that created it (SpecificArgumentsAttribute), and EmitConcreteDataSources / EmitConcreteAttributeFactory emit only that row. Later rows that inferred an already-seen type hit the dedup and were discarded.

Fix

When a method-level [Arguments] row on a generic method in a non-generic class infers types that already have an instantiation, the row is added to that instantiation (AdditionalArgumentsAttributes) instead of being dropped. The data-source and attribute emitters check membership via ConcreteInstantiation.IsSpecificDataSource, so the entry now carries every matching row in declaration order. Each type combination still has one TestEntry, and the extra rows become extra data sources on it, the same way a non-generic method with several rows works.

The change is limited to that case. Generic classes have similar gaps, but there reflection mode doesn't run every row either (see the issue), so they are left alone to keep both modes in agreement.

The change only affects the emit step. No new pipeline inputs are added, so incrementality and caching are unchanged.

Tests

  • New fixture tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/_7096: SameType<T> (3 int rows) and MixedTypes<T> (int, string, int, string).
    • Before the fix: source-gen ran 3 tests (SameType<int>(1), MixedTypes<int>(1), MixedTypes<string>(a)) and reflection ran 7.
    • After the fix: both modes run 7, and all pass.
  • New engine test Issue7096Tests (3 and 4 tests expected). It passes in reflection mode locally. The AOT leg is skipped locally because it needs a published AOT build.
  • New snapshot Tests7096. TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator.Tests passes on net8.0, net9.0 and net10.0 (186 tests) and on net472 (185). No existing snapshots changed.
  • TUnit.UnitTests (net10.0): 530 passed, 3 skipped, 0 failed.
  • Ran the TestProject filter /*/*/*Generic*/* in both modes. Source-gen: 198 passed. Reflection: 190 passed and 3 failed. The 3 failures are the known *_InvalidType constraint cases. The other differences between the modes are existing generic-class and internal-method gaps, unrelated to this change.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed generic test methods with multiple argument rows being incorrectly combined or omitted when rows infer the same type.
    • Each row now runs with its own settings, including skip behavior, display name, and category.

…c type

A generic test method with several [Arguments] rows only ran the first row
per inferred type argument in source-gen mode: CollectConcreteInstantiations
dropped later rows as duplicate type combinations, and each instantiation
only emitted the row that created it. Rows that infer an already-seen type
now join the existing instantiation, so the entry carries every matching
row, as reflection mode does.

Explanation

Issue #7096 requires every method-level [Arguments] row to run for generic methods in non-generic classes, including rows with repeated inferred types. TestMetadataGenerator now merges repeated rows into AdditionalArgumentsAttributes, and the data-source emission uses IsSpecificDataSource to retain each row. The _7096 fixture covers 3 same-type rows and 4 mixed-type rows. Issue7096Tests asserts totals and passing counts for both scenarios. The reported result is 7 tests in both modes.

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #7096. The generator changes implement repeated-row collection and preserve row-specific settings. The fixture, engine tests, and source-generator snapshot test the affected behavior. The changes explicitly exclude generic-class cases identified as outside the issue scope. No unrelated production behavior or files are demonstrated.

Review: PR 7100

The fix looks correct and is well scoped. I couldn't run the code-review skill (it errored), so this is a manual read of the diff.

What I checked

  • CollectConcreteInstantiations now keeps a map from type combination to the instantiation created by a method-level [Arguments] row. Later rows that infer the same types are added to AdditionalArgumentsAttributes instead of being dropped.
  • IsSpecificDataSource is now used in all three places that previously compared against SpecificArgumentsAttribute directly: EmitConcreteAttributeFactory and both filters in EmitConcreteDataSources. That keeps the attribute list and the data sources consistent.
  • The change only applies to a generic method on a non-generic class, so generic-class behaviour doesn't change. The PR description explains why: reflection mode has the same gap there.
  • The snapshot shows one TestEntry per type combination with every row attached (3 for SameType<int>, and 2 each for MixedTypes<int> and MixedTypes<string>). That matches how a non-generic method with several rows works.
  • The change is emit-only, so incrementality is unaffected.

Minor suggestions (non-blocking)

  • IsSpecificDataSource is a linear scan over the additional rows, and it runs once per attribute per entry. That's fine at realistic row counts. If someone writes dozens of rows, a HashSet<AttributeData> built when the instantiation is finalized would avoid the quadratic cost. It would also replace the AdditionalArgumentsAttributes list plus helper with a single membership structure.
  • If a type combination was first registered by a non-[Arguments] path, such as MethodDataSource, a later [Arguments] row for the same types is still dropped. That was already the case before this PR, and it is outside this fix. A comment on TryAddInstantiation would stop it looking like an oversight.

I found no blocking issues. Tests are included: the source generator snapshot, an engine test, and a fixture that covers both the same-type and mixed-type cases.

[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no new actionable issues were found.

Summary

Generic methods in non-generic classes now keep every [Arguments] row that infers the same types.

  • Generic tests run every argument row that shares an inferred type.

The previous unnumbered snapshot finding is fixed: the fixture uses new[], and the snapshot includes row three with its display name and categories.

Entries that merge several [Arguments] rows listed every row in their
shared attribute factory, so one row's Skip/DisplayName/Categories
(applied in ArgumentsAttribute.OnTestRegistered) leaked into its
siblings. Leave the rows out of merged entries' attribute lists;
TestBuilder already appends the producing data source to each test's
attributes, as it does for non-generic methods.

Review of #7100

The fix looks correct and is tightly scoped. I read the generator diff and the verified snapshot. I did not build the PR or run its tests.

What I checked

  • Dedup is preserved: each type combination still gets one TestEntry, and extra [Arguments] rows join it as additional data sources. This matches how non-generic methods with several rows behave.
  • The behaviour change is limited to testMethod is { IsGenericType: false, IsGenericMethod: true }, so reflection and source-gen stay aligned for generic classes. The PR description explains why those are left alone.
  • IsSpecificDataSource replaces the repeated AreSameAttribute calls in EmitConcreteDataSources, which keeps the membership logic in one place.
  • Skipping the [Arguments] rows in EmitConcreteAttributeFactory when rows are merged avoids one row's Skip/DisplayName/Categories leaking into its siblings. The comment explains the reason, and I agree with it.
  • The snapshot shows SameType<int> with three ArgumentsAttribute data sources, as intended. The new fixture covers both the same-type and mixed-type cases.

Minor suggestions (non-blocking)

  • A merged entry omits its [Arguments] from createAttributes, while a single-row entry still includes it. This relies on TestBuilder adding the producing data source to each test's attributes. A short test with a per-row Skip or DisplayName in the fixture would pin that behaviour in both modes.
  • methodArgumentsInstantiations could be made non-nullable. It is only lazily allocated, so the gain is small. The isMethodArgumentsRow flag could also be dropped by testing specificAttr and the method shape inside the helper.

No blocking issues. LGTM.

Source-gen names a generic method's tree node "SameType<int>", so the literal
"/SameType" filter matched nothing in the AOT leg. Use a trailing wildcard.

The snapshot harness parses fixtures with an older language version, where the
collection expression in Categories failed to compile and row three dropped out
of the snapshot. Use an array creation instead and regenerate the snapshot.

Review of #7100

I read the diff and found no blocking issues. I did not build or run the tests.

What it does: CollectConcreteInstantiations used to drop later [Arguments] rows that inferred an already-seen type combination. It now attaches those rows to the existing ConcreteInstantiation through AdditionalArgumentsAttributes. The emitters then use IsSpecificDataSource. Each type combination still gets one TestEntry, and the extra rows become extra data sources, the same as for a non-generic method.

Good:

  • The change is limited to generic methods on non-generic classes (IsGenericType: false, IsGenericMethod: true). That keeps source-gen and reflection modes consistent, and the PR description explains why generic classes are left alone.
  • Only the emit step changes. No new pipeline inputs are added, so incremental generation and caching are unaffected.
  • The EmitConcreteAttributeFactory comment explains why merged rows are left out of the attribute list: per-row Skip/DisplayName/Categories would otherwise leak between sibling tests. The RowSettings fixture and the snapshot cover this.
  • The tests cover both modes (engine test, source-generator snapshot, fixture) and include a mixed int/string case.

Minor suggestions (non-blocking):

  • methodArgumentsInstantiations duplicates the lookup that processedTypeCombinations already does. A single Dictionary<string, ConcreteInstantiation?> could replace both: the key marks the combination as seen, and the value is non-null only for method-row instantiations. That removes the pair of structures that has to stay in sync.
  • entry.AdditionalArgumentsAttributes is null && entry.IsSpecificDataSource(attr) encodes a subtle rule. Wrapping it in a named helper such as ShouldListInAttributes would stop a later edit from reintroducing the leak.

Overall this is a clean, well-scoped fix. LGTM.
