Fixes #7106

Problem

On generic test classes, [Arguments] rows that inferred a type combination already seen were dropped, and nothing reported it. A generic class row combined with a non-generic method row crashed in source-gen mode.

Case (fixture in Bugs/_7106) Expected Before: source-gen Before: reflection After: both modes
GenericClassSameTypeRows (class rows 1, 2, 3) 3 1 1 3
GenericClassMixedTypeRows (1, a, 2, b) 4 2 2 4
GenericClassSameTypeMethodRows (method rows infer T) 2 1 0 2
GenericClassMixedTypeMethodRows 3 2 0 3
GenericClassRowsTimesGenericMethodRows (2 class rows × 2 generic-method rows) 4 2 2 4
GenericClassRowsTimesMethodRows (2 class rows × 2 int method rows) 4 IndexOutOfRange 2 4
GenericClassRowWithMethodRow (the issue's FxNamesClass) 1 pass IndexOutOfRange pass 1 pass

Root causes and fixes

Source-gen (TestMetadataGenerator.CollectConcreteInstantiations and the concrete emitters)

  • IndexOutOfRangeException: the instantiation came from the class row. Its method data sources were filtered to "the specific row", which is a class attribute, so the method's own [Arguments(7)] was never emitted, and the invoker read args[0] from an empty array. Fix: when no parameter of the test method uses a type parameter, the method's data sources play no part in type inference. They are now always emitted, as on a non-generic class (MethodParametersReferenceTypeParameters).
  • Dropped rows: TryAddInstantiation deduplicated by type key, and only fix(sourcegen): run every [Arguments] row that infers the same generic type #7100's generic-method case merged later rows. Fix: every class or method [Arguments] row that infers an existing type combination now joins that instantiation. Class rows (AdditionalClassArgumentsAttributes) are tracked apart from method rows (AdditionalArgumentsAttributes, from fix(sourcegen): run every [Arguments] row that infers the same generic type #7100). The class × generic-method passes record both the class row and its paired method row. Data sources are filtered by owner (IsSpecificClassDataSource / IsSpecificMethodDataSource), so a class row and a method row with equal values no longer match each other. The engine then multiplies the class rows by the method rows.
  • Hard-coded constructor values: with several class rows, __CreateInstance would have baked in the first row's values for every test. It now passes args whenever more than one class row shares the instantiation. The fixtures assert TestClassArguments against the constructor value to catch this.
  • The class × generic-method fallback that added every method row now runs only when no method rows were scoped to the entry.

Reflection (ReflectionTestDataCollector.DiscoverGenericTests and the streaming twin)

  • Class rows collapsed: each class row got its own TestMetadata for the same closed type, each with one StaticDataSourceAttribute at index 0. The rows were therefore indistinguishable, and only one test per closed type ran. Fix: GroupClassRowsByTypeArgumentsAsync groups rows by inferred type arguments. Each concrete type now gets one metadata whose class data sources hold one static source per original source, so each row has its own data-source index.
  • No method rows: with no class-level data source, discovery returned before it looked at method rows. Fix: when the class has neither class data sources nor [GenerateGenericTest], BuildTestsFromMethodRows infers the class's type arguments from the method rows of each non-generic test method whose parameters use them. It reuses InferGenericTypeMapping and builds one test per instantiation, carrying only that instantiation's rows. This mirrors the source generator.
  • BuildTestMetadata now takes optional class and method data-source arrays instead of a single classData row.

Tests

  • tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/_7106/GenericClassRowsTests.cs: 7 [EngineTest(Pass)] fixtures, 21 tests.
  • tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests/Issue7106Tests.cs: checks the exact count for each fixture, in reflection and AOT modes.
  • tests/TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator.Tests/Bugs/7106/Tests7106.cs plus Tests7106.Test.verified.txt. No other snapshot changed.

Conflicts and scope

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Generic test classes now correctly discover and run rows when type arguments are inferred from class-level or method-level arguments, including mixed types and combined row sources.
    • Row-specific settings, including skip status, display name, and categories, now apply only to the correct test row.
    • Improved handling of constrained generic types, overloaded methods, and registered data-source callbacks.
    • Null argument arrays no longer produce invalid type inference.

📝 Walkthrough

The source generator and reflection discovery now retain argument rows that infer matching generic type arguments. Reflection discovery also infers generic class arguments from method rows. Test construction scopes row-specific data-source attributes, and regression tests cover discovery and execution in both modes.

Explanation

Issue #7106 requires each applicable class-level and method-level [Arguments] row on a generic test class to run in source-generation and reflection modes. The source generator now merges rows by inferred type in CollectConcreteInstantiations, separates class and method rows, emits non-inferencing method rows, and supplies row-specific constructor values. Reflection discovery groups class rows with GroupClassRowsByTypeArgumentsAsync and infers class types from method rows with BuildTestsFromMethodRows. Issue7106Tests checks the required counts in both modes. The added fixtures and Tests7106.Test.verified.txt cover the reported cases, including the IndexOutOfRangeException case. The documented different-type class/method inference case remains explicitly outside the stated scope.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain connected to #7106. TestBuilder and StaticDataSourceAttribute.PartitionOf preserve row-scoped attributes, source registration, and deferred data-source behavior after reflection groups class rows. The added receiver and row-settings tests validate these supporting paths. The Issue #7106 engine tests and generator snapshot validate the requested behavior. No demonstrated change lacks a connection to generic-class row discovery or its regression coverage.

Review of #7111

The approach is sound. Grouping rows by inferred type arguments and carrying every row on one concrete type matches the source generator, and it fixes the silent row-dropping. The fixtures in Bugs/_7106 and the verified snapshots cover both modes. I read the engine side (ReflectionTestDataCollector.cs) closely. I only skimmed the generator changes.

Points worth considering:

  1. Cancellation check removed. In the async-iterator discovery path, cancellationToken.ThrowIfCancellationRequested() used to run per data row. After the refactor, GroupClassRowsByTypeArgumentsAsync takes no token, and the per-group loop does not check it either. Discovery over large class data sources can no longer be cancelled promptly. Please pass the token into the grouping helper and check it per row.

  2. Class data is now frozen. Each group is rebuilt as new StaticDataSourceAttribute(rows.ToArray()). Before, the original data source attribute stayed in ClassDataSources. That matters for sources whose rows are meant to be fresh or lazily produced per test, such as MethodDataSource returning Func<> or new instances, or ClassDataSource with sharing semantics. The old code already used a StaticDataSourceAttribute for the single row, so this is not a new kind of regression. The source-gen side may not do the same thing for these sources, so please confirm parity with a test, since AGENTS.md requires both modes to behave identically. If that is hard to guarantee, evaluate only for type inference and keep the original source, filtered by row index. That is the approach BuildTestsFromMethodRows already takes.

  3. Non-[Arguments] method sources are ignored. In BuildTestsFromMethodRows, only ArgumentsAttribute rows take part in inference. A generic class with no class data source and a test method that uses [MethodDataSource] or similar data now gets no tests from this path. Please check that this did not previously produce a test or a clear failure. If the generator behaves the same way, a comment saying so would help.

  4. Repeated code. The two discovery paths (list-returning and async-iterator) now carry a near-identical block for creating the concrete type and resolving methods. It was already duplicated before this PR. This is a good moment to pull it into one helper that returns IEnumerable<TestMetadata>, including the failed-metadata case. The BuildTestsFromMethodRows branches are duplicated for the same reason.

  5. Minor. IndexOfTypeArguments is a linear scan per row, so it is O(rows × groups). That is fine for typical data, but a dictionary keyed on a structural comparer would scale better if a large [MethodDataSource] feeds a generic class.

Overall this is a good fix. Please look at the cancellation regression (1) and the parity question (2) before merging. Remember this is stacked on #7100, so I only reviewed the last commit's logic.

The fixture does not distinguish constructor values across class rows.

All three GenericClassSameTypeRows<T> executions can receive constructor value 1 and class metadata [1]. Each execution still satisfies IsTypeOf<int>() and the metadata assertion. Issue7106Tests.Every_Row_Runs checks only total, passed, and failed counts, so it also accepts this regression in both modes.

Add a row-specific assertion that maps the constructor value to the class metadata and distinguishes 1, 2, and 3.

Review of #7111

I read the diff but did not build the PR or run its tests. Overall the PR looks sound, and I found nothing blocking.

What I like

  • The source-gen and reflection paths now follow the same model. Rows that infer the same type combination share one instantiation (AdditionalArgumentsAttributes and AdditionalClassArgumentsAttributes on one side, GroupClassRowsByTypeArgumentsAsync and BuildTestsFromMethodRows on the other). That matches the 'both modes behave identically' rule in AGENTS.md.
  • MethodParametersReferenceTypeParameters fixes the IndexOutOfRange crash at its cause. When no parameter mentions a type parameter, the method's data sources take no part in inference and are always emitted.
  • FindConcreteMethod matches on MetadataToken and module instead of name. That also fixes the AmbiguousMatchException for overloaded test methods.
  • The comment about not listing merged rows in the attribute list explains a non-obvious Skip/DisplayName/Categories leak between sibling rows.
  • The fixture covers the matrix from the description in both modes, and the snapshots are included.

Suggestions (non-blocking)

  1. ConcreteInstantiation is accumulating overlapping state. It now has SpecificArgumentsAttribute, SpecificIsClassRow, two additional-row lists and four predicates (HasMergedRows, HasMethodRows, IsSpecificMethodDataSource, IsSpecificClassDataSource). Consider storing two plain lists, ClassRows and MethodRows, and dropping the 'specific + additional' split. The first row would then be Rows[0] rather than a special case, AddRow would stop needing the IsSpecific* check, and the &&/|| precedence in those predicates (they rely on unparenthesised mixing) would go away.
  2. Reflection grouping uses a linear scan. IndexOfTypeArguments is O(groups) per row. That is fine for typical counts. A Dictionary keyed on a structural key would be safer for large [MethodDataSource] sets, given the hot-path guidance in AGENTS.md.
  3. Reflection row inference skips null values. In InferClassTypeArgumentsFromMethodRow, a null argument yields no mapping, so the row silently produces no test when T can't be inferred. The generator side may behave differently here. A short comment, or a FailedTestMetadata entry, would make the skip visible instead of silent.
  4. AOT/trimming. CreateConcreteType and InferGenericTypeMapping sit on reflection-only paths. Please confirm the new helpers carry the same RequiresUnreferencedCode/DynamicallyAccessedMembers annotations as their neighbours.
  5. Stacking. The PR is stacked on fix(sourcegen): run every [Arguments] row that infers the same generic type #7100. Merge that first, and re-check the snapshots after rebasing, since Tests7096.Test.verified.txt appears in this diff.

Good fix and good test coverage.

Review of #7111

I reviewed the diff by reading it. I did not build or run the tests, and the automated code-review skill failed to start.

Overall: the change is well-scoped and the root causes are clearly explained. It covers both modes: the source generator's ConcreteInstantiation row merging, and the reflection collector's GroupClassRowsByTypeArgumentsAsync and BuildTestsFromMethodRows. The _7106 fixtures cover the cases in the table.

Strengths

  • Splitting IsSpecificDataSource into IsSpecificClassDataSource and IsSpecificMethodDataSource removes the ambiguity that caused the IndexOutOfRange crash.
  • MethodParametersReferenceTypeParameters is a sound rule. If no parameter mentions a type parameter, the method rows cannot take part in inference, so emitting them all matches non-generic behaviour.
  • ScopeRowAttributesToTest fixes a real cross-row leak, where one row's Skip, DisplayName or Categories applied to its siblings. It also avoids allocating when nothing changes.

Concerns

  1. Name-based attribute check. specificAttr?.AttributeClass?.Name == "ArgumentsAttribute" matches on the short name only, in the generator's merge path. A user type named ArgumentsAttribute in another namespace would match it. A symbol comparison against the known TUnit type would be safer. If the file already uses this pattern elsewhere, consistency is a fair reason to leave it.
  2. IsRowScopedDataSource coupling. Row scoping depends on the data source also implementing ITestRegisteredEventReceiver. A custom data source that is not a receiver is kept in the attribute list, which is correct. The coupling is implicit, though. A short test pinning that behaviour (custom IDataSourceAttribute without the receiver stays untouched) would protect it.
  3. Duplicate iterator. The GenerateGenericTests* code now exists in two near-identical forms: the list-returning one and the yield return one. This predates the PR, but the PR edits both. Extracting the shared per-instantiation build step would remove the risk of the two drifting apart. That can be a follow-up.
  4. Stacked PR. This builds on fix(sourcegen): run every [Arguments] row that infers the same generic type #7100, so merge order matters. Re-check the snapshot .verified.txt files after fix(sourcegen): run every [Arguments] row that infers the same generic type #7100 lands, in case the rebase shifts the generated output.
  5. Edge cases worth confirming.
    • Class rows that infer the same types, combined with [MethodDataSource] on the method.
    • HasParameterizedConstructor with several merged class rows, where values come through args instead of being baked in.

No blocking issues found from reading the code.

Review of #7111

I reviewed the engine changes (TestBuilder.ScopeRowAttributesToTest, ReflectionTestDataCollector) by reading the diff. I did not build the PR or run its tests, and the automated skill run failed, so this was a manual review. I found nothing blocking.

What looks good

  • Rows that infer the same type arguments are now grouped into one concrete type, and each row still produces a test. This fixes the silent drop of repeated type combinations and matches the source-gen behaviour.
  • ScopeRowAttributesToTest fixes the cross-row leak of Skip, DisplayName and Categories. Only the producing class and method row stay in a test's attributes. It returns the original array when nothing needs changing and otherwise allocates once.
  • The new tests cover both modes. They include the IndexOutOfRange and zero-test cases from the table in the description.

Suggestions (non-blocking)

  1. Duplicated discovery paths. The sync/list and async-streaming variants of generic-class discovery in ReflectionTestDataCollector repeat the same logic: method-row setup, GenerateGenericTest handling and the grouping loop. This PR edits both copies in step. A shared helper that yields (concreteType, method, sources) tuples, with each path adding only its own error handling, would stop the two drifting apart. This is more important because AGENTS.md requires identical behaviour between source-gen and reflection.
  2. Row detection by interface. IsRowScopedDataSource treats any attribute that is an IDataSourceAttribute and an ITestRegisteredEventReceiver as a row. A custom data source that also implements the receiver interface for unrelated reasons would be stripped from the test's attributes and replaced by the producing source. That is probably fine, but a marker interface or a property on the attribute would make the intent explicit. Please add a test, or a comment, covering this case.
  3. Dependence on fix(sourcegen): run every [Arguments] row that infers the same generic type #7100. This PR is stacked on fix(sourcegen): run every [Arguments] row that infers the same generic type #7100, so merge fix(sourcegen): run every [Arguments] row that infers the same generic type #7100 first. The final StaticDataSourceAttribute.PartitionOf unwrapping depends on that PR's semantics.
  4. AOT/trimming. FindConcreteMethod and BuildTestsFromMethodRows add reflection in discovery. Please confirm the existing RequiresUnreferencedCode and DynamicallyAccessedMembers annotations cover them. The description says AOT engine tests were fixed, which suggests this was checked.

Overall this is a solid fix that I would approve once #7100 lands.
