Summary

Before: four cancellation tests in WaitsForAssertionTests asserted that cancellation finished within 500ms or 1s. Loaded macOS runners exceeded those limits: 570ms against a 500ms budget, and 1.19s against a 1s budget.
After: each test uses a 30s internal timeout and a 10s elapsed budget. That still proves the timeout was short-circuited, with plenty of room for slow runners.

Cause

The tests decided "cancellation beat the timeout" with a wall-clock budget only a few hundred ms above the cancel delay. Scheduler jitter on shared runners is larger than that, so the tests failed even though the code worked.

Fix

  • Added shared CancellationTestTimeout (30s) and CancellationElapsedBudget (10s) constants. They are used in:
    • WaitsFor_PropagatesExternalCancellation_Before_Internal_Timeout
    • WaitsFor_Honours_PreCancelled_Token_Before_First_Poll (its timeout goes from 5s to 30s, so the budget sits well below it)
    • Eventually_PropagatesExternalCancellation_Before_Internal_Timeout
    • WaitsFor_Propagates_OCE_When_Predicate_Observes_Supplied_Token
  • The main proof is still the Throws<OperationCanceledException> check. If the token were ignored, the internal timeout would raise an AssertionException after 30s and that check would fail. The elapsed check is now a loose second guard instead of a tight timing race.
  • Related fix in the same area: ExecutionTimeTests.Completes_Within_Unhappy/Unhappy2 checked a 250ms CompletesWithin against a 10s action with a 1s budget. The budget is now 5s, still well under the 10s action.

Tests run

  • tests/TUnit.Assertions.Tests net10.0, --treenode-filter "/*/*/WaitsForAssertionTests/*": 27/27 passed
  • tests/TUnit.Assertions.Tests net10.0, --treenode-filter "/*/*/ExecutionTimeTests/*": 4/4 passed

Fixes #7169

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Improved timing-test reliability on heavily loaded continuous integration environments by allowing broader execution-time tolerances.
    • Updated cancellation tests with shared timeout and elapsed-time limits to reduce sensitivity to temporary system load.

Fixes #7159

…l-clock budgets

The WaitsFor/Eventually cancellation tests asserted elapsed times of 500ms-1s, which loaded macOS CI runners exceeded. Use a 30s internal timeout and a 10s elapsed budget: an ignored token would surface as an AssertionException after 30s, so the OperationCanceledException check plus a budget far below the timeout still proves cancellation short-circuited it. Apply the same treatment to the CompletesWithin unhappy-path tests.

📝 Walkthrough

The test suite now allows longer elapsed times for execution-time and cancellation assertions. Cancellation tests use shared timeout and elapsed-budget constants.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The changes satisfy #7169 and #7159. The cancellation tests use a 30-second internal timeout and a 10-second elapsed budget. WaitsFor_Propagates_OCE_When_Predicate_Observes_Supplied_Token keeps Throws<OperationCanceledException> as the primary check. The two ExecutionTimeTests use a 5-second elapsed budget for the 250ms timeout and 10-second action. The reported focused test runs passed.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within the linked issue scope. They update test timing budgets, shared test constants, and explanatory comments. The ExecutionTimeTests updates address the same slow-runner timing problem. No production behavior or unrelated functionality changes are described.

Summary

The PR makes timing tests less sensitive to slow CI runners.

  • Cancellation tests allow slower runners time to report cancellation.

Review: this is a clean, low-risk test-only change.

  • Raising the cancellation tests to a 30s internal timeout and a 10s elapsed budget removes the wall-clock race. The Throws<OperationCanceledException> check is still the real proof: if the token were ignored, the 30s timeout would raise an AssertionException and fail it.
  • Sharing the two constants keeps the four tests consistent. The comment explains why the values were chosen.
  • The pre-cancelled test's timeout goes from 5s to 30s, so the 10s budget stays below it. That was needed.
  • The ExecutionTimeTests budget of 5s is still well under the 10s action, so it still shows the 250ms limit cut the action short.

One optional point: a pure timing assertion on a shared runner can never be fully deterministic. You could drop the elapsed checks entirely and rely on the exception type. That would be slightly more robust, but the loose second guard is fine as it is.

I found no issues. I did not run the tests myself; the PR description reports 27/27 and 4/4 passing.

Dispositions for the review findings that are not in threads:

  • github-actions (optional: drop the elapsed checks and rely on the exception type only): not taking this. The Throws<OperationCanceledException> check is the main proof, but the loose 10s/5s elapsed guards still catch a regression where cancellation is honoured only after a long delay. They are far enough from the observed runtimes (about 2s for the whole class locally) that they should not flake.
  • CodeRabbit docstring coverage warning: not applicable. These are test methods, and the repository does not require XML docs on tests.
  • Codex and Greptile: no findings.

The CodeRabbit inline thread was answered and resolved (clarifying comment added in 99784e8).

Review: LGTM. This is a test-only change that fixes the flakiness in #7169.

  • The cancellation tests now share CancellationTestTimeout (30s) and CancellationElapsedBudget (10s).
  • The Throws<OperationCanceledException> check is still the main proof. If the token were ignored, the 30s internal timeout would raise an AssertionException and that check would fail.
  • The elapsed check is now only a loose second guard. It is still well under the 30s timeout, so it keeps its value without racing the scheduler.
  • The ExecutionTimeTests budget of 5s against a 10s action keeps a meaningful margin.

Nit, no change needed: WaitsFor_Honours_PreCancelled_Token_Before_First_Poll could assert that no poll ran. That would prove the pre-cancelled path without any timing at all.
