Why

I measured recent PR runs. Two things set how long a PR waits for CI:

  1. Runner queueing. Each push starts about 25 jobs, four of them on macOS (the .NET matrix plus three Apple smoke jobs). The required modularpipeline (macos-latest) job then waited 11–37 minutes for a runner in several runs (39145538724: 37.5 min, 39145698929: 23.1 min). Ubuntu jobs in the Locale matrix queued for up to 8 minutes.
  2. The AOT publish of TUnit.TestProject. It takes 5.5 min on Ubuntu, 6.8 on Windows and 8.3 on macOS, and all of these waited for it: packing (and every NuGet package test after it), the RPC tests and all of the engine tests. The pipeline's critical path was AOT publish → RPC tests → engine tests, about 12–15 minutes of an approximately 14–16 minute pipeline.

What changes

Fewer jobs per push (11 fewer runner slots, 2 of them macOS)

  • Platform smoke: iOS, tvOS and Mac Catalyst now share one macOS runner. The workloads install once, the referenced TUnit libraries build once, and each platform still runs if an earlier one fails. The simulator steps move to scripts/Run-AppleSimulatorSmoke.sh, and only one simulator is booted at a time.
  • Locale tests: I dropped de-DE and pl-PL, which only repeat fr-FR's decimal comma. Each locale is a full solution build of about 5 minutes.
  • mock-aot: one job publishes every framework in turn, instead of one job per framework. A third of each of those jobs was setup. The single job still reports every failing framework.
  • Locale and CloudShop use shallow clones, because neither reads git history.

Shorter critical path inside the matrix jobs

  • PublishTestProjectAOTModule builds into artifacts/aot-publish (ArtifactsPath). The global Aot property flows to every referenced project, so before this change the publish recompiled the TUnit.* libraries in their shared bin folders ([Bug]: CS1705 with TUnit.Mocks.Http/Logger referencing a higher TUnit.Mocks version #5622) and rewrote TUnit.TestProject/obj/project.assets.json while the RPC tests were reading it (NETSDK1047). With its own tree, packing and the RPC tests no longer wait for it.
    • I checked this locally: publishing with the isolated path left src/TUnit.Core|Engine/bin/Release, TUnit.TestProject's bin and its project.assets.json untouched. ILC ran to completion; the native link failed only because my machine lacks vswhere.exe.
  • The engine tests are split by mode:
    • RunEngineTestsModule sets TUNIT_ENGINE_TEST_MODE=Reflection. It runs the Reflection rows plus the tests that don't run per mode, and no longer waits for the AOT publish, RPC or Playwright tests.
    • The new RunEngineAotTestsModule waits for the publish and filters to [EngineTestMode=AOT]. That property comes from a new [assembly: TagTestMode] discovery receiver.
    • Both still take the NetworkTests lock and wait for the same set of other test modules.
    • Listing tests locally: 563 in total = 391 in the Reflection run + 172 in the AOT run, with no overlap.
  • UploadToNuGetModule now depends explicitly on the AOT engine, RPC and Playwright modules. Before, it only depended on them indirectly through the old engine module.

Not in this PR

  • CodeQL is the repo's default code-scanning setup, configured in repository settings. codeql.yml is disabled_manually and never runs, so its C# analysis (about 9 min per push) can only be changed in settings.
  • The Windows InstallPlaywrightModule takes 6.6 min, but it no longer gates the engine tests.

Overlap with #7130

Both PRs edit PackTUnitFilesModule's dependency on PublishTestProjectAOTModule: #7130 makes it Optional, and this PR removes it. Both also edit dotnet.yml. Whichever merges second needs a small rebase.

Test plan

  • TUnit.Pipeline builds.
  • TUnit.Engine.Tests builds. Test counts per mode and filter are listed above, and a Reflection-only run passes locally.
  • The changed workflows parse, and the shell scripts pass bash -n.
  • CI: every job green, including Apple smoke tests, mock AOT, and both engine modules in each matrix job. Compare the modularpipeline durations and module start times against ci: take AOT publishes and doc snippets off the Ubuntu critical path #7128.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Engine tests now run in both Reflection and AOT modes. CI attempts all mock test projects across .NET 8, 9, and 10, and reports failures by project and framework.
    • Apple platform smoke tests run in a dedicated job for iOS, tvOS, and Mac Catalyst, with test artifacts uploaded even when tests fail. The general smoke-test matrix covers Browser, Android, and WASI.
    • Locale testing now covers French, Swedish, Turkish, and Arabic (Saudi Arabia).
  • Chores
    • CI checkout steps use the default Git history depth.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request updates CI workflows, moves Apple simulator smoke tests to a separate Xcode job, and adds shared Reflection/AOT engine test execution. It also isolates AOT publish outputs and updates pipeline dependencies.

Changes: CI workflow adjustments

Layer / File(s) Summary
Checkout and locale matrix
.github/workflows/cloudshop-example.yml, .github/workflows/dotnet-build-different-locale.yml
Checkout steps now use the default fetch depth. The locale matrix tests fr-FR, sv-SE, tr-TR, and ar-SA.
Mock AOT test loop
.github/workflows/dotnet.yml
One Ubuntu job processes all three target frameworks and both mock test projects. It continues after individual failures and exits unsuccessfully if any pair fails.

Apple simulator smoke tests

Layer / File(s) Summary
Apple smoke job setup
.github/workflows/platform-smoke.yml
The shared smoke matrix retains Browser, Android, and WASI. A separate xcode-27 job installs Apple workloads and starts the simulator runs.
Platform builds and simulator runs
.github/workflows/platform-smoke.yml, scripts/Run-AppleSimulatorSmoke.sh
The Apple job builds and runs iOS, tvOS, and Mac Catalyst tests, then uploads artifacts. The script launches the app, checks for exactly one passing test and no failures, and copies available results.

Engine test modes and pipeline

Layer / File(s) Summary
Engine test mode selection
tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests/Attributes/TagTestModeAttribute.cs, tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests/GlobalSettings.cs, tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests/InvokableTestBase.cs
The discovery receiver adds an EngineTestMode property for a class argument of type TestMode. The mode selector reads TUNIT_ENGINE_TEST_MODE and yields the selected supported mode, or all supported modes when unset.
Shared Reflection and AOT test runners
tools/TUnit.Pipeline/Modules/Abstract/EngineTestsModuleBase.cs, tools/TUnit.Pipeline/Modules/RunEngineTestsModule.cs, tools/TUnit.Pipeline/Modules/RunEngineAotTestsModule.cs, tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests/GitHubReporterTests.cs
A shared pipeline module runs engine tests with configured arguments, environment variables, timeouts, and logging. Separate modules configure Reflection and AOT test runs.
AOT publish isolation and pipeline dependencies
tools/TUnit.Pipeline/Modules/PublishTestProjectAOTModule.cs, tools/TUnit.Pipeline/Modules/PackTUnitFilesModule.cs, tools/TUnit.Pipeline/Modules/RunRpcTestsModule.cs, tools/TUnit.Pipeline/Modules/UploadToNuGetModule.cs
AOT publishing sets ArtifactsPath to artifacts/aot-publish. Package and RPC test dependencies on AOT publishing were removed. NuGet upload now depends on AOT engine tests and optionally on RPC and Playwright tests.

An unsupported test-mode setting can silently omit some engine tests. The pipeline uses supported settings, and the Apple smoke-job failure path has been corrected, so this is a bounded risk rather than a merge blocker.

Review

The CI restructuring looks sound. Splitting engine tests by TestMode and isolating the AOT publish in artifacts/aot-publish removes a real critical-path dependency. The shared EngineTestsModuleBase, the EngineTestMode tag, and the continue-on-failure loops in mock-aot and apple-smoke are clean.

I read the diff only and did not run any of it. Points to verify:

  1. Dropped RunRpcTestsModule and RunPlaywrightTestsModule dependencies on engine tests. The old code ordered the engine tests after both. Engine tests and RPC tests both launch TUnit.TestProject (--no-build), and the RPC tests use dotnet run. Both are [NotInParallel("NetworkTests")], so they stay serialized. Please confirm RunPlaywrightTestsModule shares that key. If it doesn't, the old ordering was the only guard against overlap.

  2. Silent zero-test risk in the AOT run. --treenode-filter "/*/*/*/*[EngineTestMode=AOT]" matches nothing if the tag is not applied, for example if TestClassArguments is empty at discovery time. The module would then pass with no tests. Consider adding --minimum-expected-tests <n> to RunEngineAotTestsModule, and a similar floor for the Reflection run.

  3. Pattern precedence in InvokableTestBase. !IsNetFramework && OnlyTestMode is null or nameof(TestMode.AOT) parses as intended (is (null or "AOT")). A small readability tweak would be explicit parentheses, so nobody has to check the precedence.

  4. apple-smoke builds three platforms from one checkout. Each dotnet build changes SmokePlatform, so the TFM and obj/ assets switch between builds. I expect restore to handle this. A stale obj could still cause flaky failures, so watch the first runs.

  5. Smaller details. The iOS simulator now boots before the workload install. If the install fails, the tvOS swap step is skipped but the iOS simulator stays booted until the job ends, which is harmless. Dropping de-DE and pl-PL is reasonable given the comment explaining why.

Overall this is good, subject to points 1 and 2.

Comment thread .github/workflows/platform-smoke.yml
iOS, tvOS and Mac Catalyst each took an xcode-27 runner, so every push queued
three macOS jobs on top of the .NET matrix's own and the matrix waited up to
37 minutes for a macOS runner. One runner installs the workloads once, builds
the referenced TUnit libraries once and still runs every platform after an
earlier one fails.
de-DE and pl-PL only repeat fr-FR's decimal comma, and each locale is a full
solution build. Neither the locale builds nor CloudShop read git history, so
they no longer fetch it.
A runner per framework spent a third of each job on setup and took two more of
the runners every push competes for. Serially the publishes still finish well
inside the matrix jobs.
The global Aot property flows to every referenced project, so the publish
recompiled the TUnit.* libraries into their shared bin folders and rewrote
TUnit.TestProject's project.assets.json. Packing and the RPC tests had to wait
the 5.5-8 minutes it takes. Isolated, both start straight away.
Only the AOT rows need TESTPROJECT_AOT, yet every engine test waited for the
publish, then for the RPC and Playwright tests. TUNIT_ENGINE_TEST_MODE limits the
modes a run generates, and an EngineTestMode property lets the AOT module filter
to its rows alone, so the two modules partition the suite. Releasing now waits
for the modules the engine tests used to wait on.
…ator fails to boot

Also parenthesise the AOT test-mode pattern so its precedence reads at a glance.

Dispositions for the review-body points (github-actions review), after rebasing onto main:

  1. RPC/Playwright ordering: no change needed. RunPlaywrightTestsModule, RunRpcTestsModule, RunEngineTestsModule and RunEngineAotTestsModule all carry [NotInParallel("NetworkTests")], so they stay serialized without the old DependsOn.
  2. Zero-test risk in the AOT run: no change needed. Neither module passes --ignore-exit-code 8, so a filter that matches nothing makes Microsoft.Testing.Platform exit with code 8 and fails the module. I also checked locally: with TUNIT_ENGINE_TEST_MODE=AOT and --treenode-filter "/*/*/*/*[EngineTestMode=AOT]", discovery finds 218 tests.
  3. Pattern precedence: done in 70f1ed7. The pattern is now OnlyTestMode is (null or nameof(TestMode.AOT)).
  4. Three Apple platforms from one checkout: each build restores for its own TFM. I'll watch the first runs, as suggested.
  5. iOS simulator left booted when the install fails: harmless, as noted. The install step now runs even when the simulator fails to boot (70f1ed7).

Review of #7131 (CI speed-up)

I reviewed the diff by reading it. I did not run the workflows or the pipeline.

Overall: the changes hold together and the reasoning in the PR description matches the code.

  • Mode split. TagTestModeAttribute plus the TUNIT_ENGINE_TEST_MODE check in InvokableTestBase split the engine tests cleanly. The Reflection module runs everything left untagged. The AOT module filters on EngineTestMode=AOT, so nothing runs twice and nothing is dropped.
  • Isolated AOT publish. Moving the publish to ArtifactsPath removes the reasons for the old PackTUnitFilesModule and RunRpcTestsModule dependencies. The -o TESTPROJECT_AOT output path is unchanged, so the AOT engine tests still find the app.
  • Release gating. UploadToNuGetModule now depends on the AOT engine, RPC and Playwright modules, so a release can't skip them.

Points to check

  1. Fail-open filter. If the tag is not applied (for example, TestClassArguments is empty for some base-class shapes), the filter /*/*/*/*[EngineTestMode=AOT] matches zero tests. A zero-test run can look like a pass. Add --minimum-expected-tests to the AOT module, or a guard test that fails when no AOT-tagged tests exist.
  2. ArtifactsPath and the published layout. Setting ArtifactsPath switches the SDK to its artifacts output layout (bin/<project>/<config>_<rid>). The -o output should override that for the publish folder. I did not find UseArtifactsOutput in the root props. Please confirm the first CI run shows the AOT app still being found. Also confirm artifacts/ is gitignored.
  3. Env-var parsing. OnlyTestMode is null or nameof(...) is case-sensitive, and an empty string makes both modes silently disappear. Use string.IsNullOrEmpty plus an ignore-case comparison, or throw on an unknown value.
  4. mock-aot runs serially. One job publishes three frameworks in a row, which is about 10 minutes. It is probably off the critical path, but it sits next to a ~14–16 minute pipeline. If it ever becomes the long pole, the matrix is the easy way back.
  5. apple-smoke condition on the swap step. The tvOS swap step is gated only on workloads succeeding. If the iOS simulator never booted, simctl shutdown $IosDevice is guarded by || true, so it is fine. IosDevice is unset in that case, though. set -u isn't active in the step shell, but make it explicit.

None of these block the PR. I'd fix item 1 before merging, because it is the only one that can hide a regression.

Reject invalid test modes before discovery.

An empty or unsupported TUNIT_ENGINE_TEST_MODE value yields no modes. A test process started with such a value can therefore omit all tests that inherit from InvokableTestBase without a configuration error. The pipeline modules currently provide only "Reflection" and "AOT", but the data source should still reject other values.

Update GetTestModes to validate any non-null OnlyTestMode against the supported
Reflection and AOT values before yielding modes; throw an ArgumentException for
empty or unsupported values so discovery cannot silently omit tests.

* fix(engine): use UnreceivedDataRowObjects in skipped-test tracking

#7195 renamed TestDetails.FailedDataRowObjects to UnreceivedDataRowObjects,
and #7191 merged afterwards with a use of the old name, so main no longer
compiles (CS1061 in TestArgumentRegistrationService). The CloudShop Example
Tests workflow fails at its Build step on every main push since then.

* ci: give the macOS AOT test-app publish a 60-minute module timeout

Since #7131 the publish builds into its own artifacts tree and overlaps the
test modules. On the 3-core macOS runner it now takes 24-27 minutes when it
passes, and the default 30-minute ModularPipelines timeout killed it on six
.NET runs on 2026-10-20, failing those PRs' macOS jobs.

The overlap from #7131 slowed the publish on Linux and Windows too. On
ubuntu it went from 3.5 to 13.5-18.5 minutes and the pipeline from
about 9 to 15-20 minutes. The publish is the critical path everywhere,
so the reflection-mode engine tests and the NuGet tester AOT publishes
now wait for it on every OS. Static DependsOn attributes replace the
macOS-only DeclareDependencies overrides.

* ci: stop heavy modules overlapping the AOT test-app publish on macOS

#7131 let the reflection-mode engine tests and the NuGet tester AOT
publishes run alongside PublishTestProjectAOTModule. On the 3-core,
7 GB macOS runner that contention stretched the publish from 7 to
24-27 minutes, and the macOS pipeline from about 13 to about 26 minutes.
It also tripped the 30-minute module timeout.

On macOS only, both modules now wait for the publish again. Linux and
Windows keep the overlap.

* ci: make every OS wait for the AOT test-app publish, not just macOS

The overlap from #7131 slowed the publish on Linux and Windows too. On
ubuntu it went from 3.5 to 13.5-18.5 minutes and the pipeline from
about 9 to 15-20 minutes. The publish is the critical path everywhere,
so the reflection-mode engine tests and the NuGet tester AOT publishes
now wait for it on every OS. Static DependsOn attributes replace the
macOS-only DeclareDependencies overrides.
