Summary

Before: a test that was skipped never disposed the data-source objects the builder had already created for it. This covered a [Skip] test with a non-shared ClassDataSource argument and a TestDataRow with Skip set, in both engine modes.

After: those objects are disposed when the skipped test completes. Shared and keyed instances that another test still holds stay alive, because disposal goes through the object tracker's reference counting.

Cause

TestFilterService.RegisterTest returns early when a test has a SkipReason, before RegisterTestArgumentsAsync. Skipping registration is intentional: it avoids resolving injected properties and creating expensive shared fixtures for a test that never runs. But the test builder has already created the row's arguments, so nothing tracked them. The skipped test still completes through TestCoordinator, whose finally calls UntrackObjects, but that call had nothing to release.

Fix

In the skip branch, when the test is registered for execution, the engine now tracks the objects the test already holds:

Not covered: the issue also describes rows dropped by IsDataCompatibleWithExpectedTypes in TestBuilder. The issue author could not reach that branch, and I did not attempt it here.

Tests

  • New tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/_7156:
    • a [Skip] test with a SharedType.None ClassDataSource
    • a skipped TestDataRow
    • a [Skip] test that holds a keyed instance
    • an observer test, linked with DependsOn(ProceedOnFailure = true), that injects the same keyed instance. It asserts that the per-row objects are disposed and the keyed instance is not.
  • New Issue7156Tests in TUnit.Engine.Tests.
  • Before the fix, the observer failed in both source-generated and reflection modes (SkippedMethodDisposable.Created.All(x => x.IsDisposed) was false). After the fix it passes in both modes.
  • Engine tests, reflection mode, all passing: Issue7156Tests, Issue7123Tests, DerivedSkipWithClassDataSourceTests, DynamicSkipReasonTests, FilteredSharedFixtureDisposalTests, SkipInHooksTests, SkipTestExceptionTests, SkipTests, KeyedDataSourceTests. AOT mode is skipped locally and covered by CI.
  • TestProject, both modes: Bugs._7077, Bugs._7123 and SkipTests give the same counts as before.
  • TUnit.UnitTests (net10.0): all passed. TUnit.Engine builds for every TFM with 0 warnings.
  • There is no public API change.

Fixes #7156

Review follow-up (ea87c71)

  • If a getter throws while a skipped test's objects are tracked, the test now stays skipped instead of the whole run aborting. ObjectTracker.TrackObjects also removes the objects that a failed discovery added, so that a test does not release references it never took. That rollback also applies to the existing registration path.
  • Skipped-test tracking now sets TestContext.Current first, as argument registration does.
  • New fixtures: SkippedWithThrowingGetter and SkippedWithContextReadingGetter. Both fail without the fix in both modes.
  • A shared instance can be reused after it has been disposed by a test registered later. This already happens whatever the holder's outcome, and is now tracked separately in Shared data-source instances are reused after disposal by tests registered later in the session #7204.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved cleanup for skipped tests so method and data-row arguments are disposed correctly.
    • Preserved shared instances while they remain needed by other tests.
    • Ensured skipped tests remain skipped when tracking encounters an error.
    • Prevented partially discovered objects from remaining tracked after a failed discovery.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for skipped-row disposal, context tracking, shared-instance lifetime, and failed object discovery rollback.

Skipped tests returned from registration before their arguments were
tracked, so objects the builder had already created (for example a
non-shared ClassDataSource argument or a TestDataRow with Skip set) were
never disposed. Track them, without property resolution or
initialization, so the skipped test's completion releases them through
reference counting.

📝 Walkthrough

Execution-time registration now tracks existing argument objects for skipped tests so the object tracker can dispose them. Failed object discovery also removes objects added during that call while preserving previously tracked objects.

Explanation

The changes satisfy the confirmed coding requirements in #7156. TestFilterService tracks arguments for skipped tests only when registration is for execution. TrackSkippedTestArguments uses object tracking without property injection or fixture initialization. ObjectTracker rolls back objects discovered before a tracking failure. The added regression tests cover non-shared ClassDataSource arguments, skipped TestDataRow arguments, keyed reference counting, context tracking, and getter failures. The incompatible-row branch is identified as unconfirmed in #7156 and is explicitly outside this PR scope.

Tracking a skipped test's arguments reads IAsyncInitializer-typed property getters. A getter that
threw escaped RegisterTestsAsync and aborted the whole run. The test now stays skipped and its
objects are left untracked, as before #7156.

ObjectTracker.TrackObjects now removes the objects that a failed discovery added to the test's
tracked set. References are counted only after discovery finishes, so completing the test would
otherwise release references it never took.

Skipped-test tracking also sets TestContext.Current first, as argument registration does, so
getters see the right test.

Review of #7191

Solid, well-scoped fix. Tracking the already-built argument objects in the skip branch, without property injection or initialization, keeps the original intent of skipping registration. Disposal goes through the existing ref-counting, so the keyed-instance case is covered. The new tests cover the interesting cases: a non-shared ClassDataSource, a skipped TestDataRow, a keyed instance, and a throwing getter.

I did not build or run anything. I read the diff and the PR description only, and the code-review skill failed to run.

Points to consider (none blocking):

  1. Swallowed exception in TestFilterService.RegisterTest. The bare catch (Exception) hides the failure completely. If a getter throws, the user gets no signal that disposal was skipped. Consider logging at debug level. Also confirm the catch cannot swallow OperationCanceledException in a way that hides cancellation.
  2. TestContext.Current = testContext is set and never restored. RegisterTestArgumentsAsync does the same, so this is consistent. It is worth checking that nothing downstream in the filter loop reads TestContext.Current and gets the wrong test. Restoring the previous value in a finally would be safer.
  3. Rollback in ObjectTracker.TrackObjects. The RemoveObjectsNotIn rollback is a good defensive fix. It changes the existing registration path too, which the PR notes. A direct unit test of the rollback on the normal path would pin this down. The current coverage is only indirect, through the skipped-test fixtures.
  4. Duplicated empty-check in TrackSkippedTestArguments. The four-way emptiness check duplicates knowledge of what TrackObjects considers trackable. If TrackObjects already returns cheaply when the graph is empty, the guard could move into one place. Keeping the guard here to skip the AsyncLocal write is reasonable, though.

Overall this looks good to me.

…ipped-test tracking failures

Addresses review: a direct unit test shows a failed object-graph discovery
removes what it added, so completing the test never releases a reference it
did not take (a shared instance another test holds stays alive). The catch in
TestFilterService.RegisterTest now logs at debug level and documents why it
cannot swallow run cancellation.

Dispositions for the github-actions review (07:26):

  1. Bare catch (Exception) in TestFilterService.RegisterTest: I checked whether it can swallow cancellation, and it cannot swallow run cancellation. TrackSkippedTestArguments → TrackObjects is synchronous and takes no CancellationToken, and RegisterTest has none either. So the only OperationCanceledException that can reach this catch is one thrown by a user property getter, which is just another getter failure. I did not add a rethrow, because that would abort registration for the whole batch, which is a harsher outcome than the non-skipped path gets. That path (RegisterTestArgumentsAsync) also catches every exception and turns it into a failed test. In 7627d19 the catch now logs at debug level and has a comment explaining this.
  2. Restoring TestContext.Current in a finally: declined, to stay consistent with RegisterTestArgumentsAsync, which sets it the same way. The write happens inside the async RegisterTest. The async method builder restores the caller's ExecutionContext when RegisterTest returns, so the value never reaches the filter loop or other tests. After the write, RegisterTest only calls InvalidateDisplayNameCache() and returns, and that call does not read TestContext.Current.
  3. Direct test of the ObjectTracker.TrackObjects rollback: added tests/TUnit.UnitTests/ObjectTrackerRollbackTests.cs in 7627d19. It uses a fake IObjectGraphDiscoverer on the normal ObjectTracker path:
    • Another context holds a shared disposable, with reference count 1.
    • The test context has already tracked kept. A second discovery adds the shared instance and then throws.
    • After the throw, the tracked set is exactly { kept }. UntrackObjects disposes kept but not the shared instance, which is disposed only when its real holder releases it.
    • A second case checks that a failed first discovery leaves nothing tracked.
    • Both tests fail with the RemoveObjectsNotIn call commented out, and pass with it.
  4. Duplicated empty-check: kept as is, as the review suggests. The check is there to skip the AsyncLocal write when there is nothing to track.

Verified on net10.0:

  • The new unit tests pass in both modes.
  • In reflection mode, these engine tests pass: Issue7156Tests, Issue7123Tests, SkipTests, DerivedSkipWithClassDataSourceTests and FilteredSharedFixtureDisposalTests.
  • The Bugs._7156 TestProject classes give the same result in both modes: 6 total, 1 passed, 5 skipped.

Greptile's concern about later tests receiving a disposed shared fixture is pre-existing behaviour, tracked in #7204 as the PR description notes.

Review of #7191 (skipped-test argument disposal)

The fix is well-targeted. It keeps the intentional early return for skipped tests, so no property injection or shared-fixture creation happens, and it only adds ref-counted tracking for objects the builder already created. It reuses ObjectTracker.TrackObjects, so shared and keyed instances are handled the same way as for running tests. I didn't build or run anything. This is from reading the diff, and the skill-based review failed to run, so I did a manual pass.

Good

  • Tracking is gated on isForExecution, which is consistent with Running tests from Rider doeas not trigger DisposeAsync from IAsyncDisposable #6151.
  • The rollback in ObjectTracker.TrackObjects is a real correctness fix: without it, a getter that throws mid-discovery leaves objects in the tracked set whose references were never counted. UntrackObjects would then over-release and could dispose a shared instance early. The unit test covers exactly that case.
  • The tests cover both engine modes, a keyed instance that must survive, and TestContext.Current visibility in getters.

Suggestions (non-blocking)

  1. TrackSkippedTestArguments sets TestContext.Current = testContext (an AsyncLocal) and never restores it. This probably matches RegisterTestArgumentsAsync, but it is worth confirming that nothing later in the filter loop assumes a different current context. Restoring the previous value in a try/finally would make this safe by construction.
  2. The catch in TestFilterService swallows all exceptions and logs only at Debug. A skipped test whose objects silently stay undisposed is hard to diagnose, so consider logging at Warning, or at least including the exception type.
  3. The early-exit check in TrackSkippedTestArguments duplicates knowledge of which TestDetails members hold trackable objects. If ObjectTracker already returns cheaply when nothing is trackable, the pre-check could live there to avoid drift. The AsyncLocal-write saving is small.
  4. The IsDataCompatibleWithExpectedTypes drop path remains uncovered. This is acknowledged in the description, so consider a follow-up issue so it isn't lost.

Overall this is a sound change and I have no blocking concerns.

* fix(engine): use UnreceivedDataRowObjects in skipped-test tracking

#7195 renamed TestDetails.FailedDataRowObjects to UnreceivedDataRowObjects,
and #7191 merged afterwards with a use of the old name, so main no longer
compiles (CS1061 in TestArgumentRegistrationService). The CloudShop Example
Tests workflow fails at its Build step on every main push since then.

* ci: give the macOS AOT test-app publish a 60-minute module timeout

Since #7131 the publish builds into its own artifacts tree and overlaps the
test modules. On the 3-core macOS runner it now takes 24-27 minutes when it
passes, and the default 30-minute ModularPipelines timeout killed it on six
.NET runs on 2026-10-20, failing those PRs' macOS jobs.
