Summary

Before: when the Arguments of a [MethodDataSource] fit two overloads equally well (for example Tie(string, IComparable) and Tie(string, IConvertible) with Arguments = new object[] { "IComparable", 1 }), the build reported nothing. Source-gen mode called the first overload and passed. Reflection mode threw AmbiguousMatchException.

After: the build fails with the new error TUnit0076: "The Arguments fit more than one overload of 'Tie' equally well: MyClass.Tie(string, IComparable), MyClass.Tie(string, IConvertible)". Neither mode reaches the runtime difference. This is the compile-time equivalent of C#'s CS0121.

Cause

Reflection mode resolves the overload with Type.GetMethod(name, flags, binder: null, argumentTypes, modifiers: null). The default binder throws when no candidate is the most specific. The analyzer only took the first overload that the arguments convert to, so it never saw the tie.

Fix

TestDataAnalyzer gets FindAmbiguousOverloads, which mirrors DefaultBinder.SelectMethod / FindMostSpecificMethod / FindMostSpecificType:

  • The candidates are same-name overloads with exactly one parameter per argument, as for the binder. Overrides are skipped because they are the same runtime method as their base.
  • A candidate applies when every argument converts to its parameter by identity, reference, boxing or numeric widening. User-defined and nullable conversions are excluded because the binder does not accept them.
  • A candidate wins when, for each parameter, it is the exact argument type or the more specific type, and it loses on no parameter. Identical parameter lists (new-hidden members) never tie, because the binder prefers the most derived one.
  • Arguments containing null and generic overloads are left alone: reflection mode uses a name-only lookup for nulls, and the binder does not infer type arguments.

The rule also gets the usual release-tracking entry and resources, and a docs page at docs/docs/reference/tunit0076.md that is linked from the sidebar. The page has no C# fences, so the snippet compile gate does not apply to it.

Overlap with #7179

#7179 changes the overload matching (MatchesParameters) in the same file. This PR does not depend on it. The new check and helpers are placed away from #7179's hunks: the call sits just before the ReturnsVoid check and the helpers are at the end of the class. git merge-tree against #7179's head reports no conflicts.

Tests

  • New analyzer tests in MethodDataSourceAnalyzerTests:
    • flagged: the issue's IComparable/IConvertible tie, and (string, object) vs (object, string) with two strings;
    • not flagged: object/string/IComparable overloads with a string or an int argument, long/double overloads with an int argument (numeric widening), an overload with a different parameter count, and a virtual data source method that the test class overrides.
  • TUnit.Analyzers.Tests (net10.0): 871 passed, 1 skipped, 0 failed.
  • tests/TUnit.TestProject builds on net10.0 with the new analyzer, with no TUnit0076 false positives across its data sources.

Fixes #7175

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added an analyzer error for ambiguous MethodDataSource overloads when arguments match multiple equally suitable methods.
    • The check accounts for identity, reference, boxing, nullable, and runtime numeric conversions while excluding unsupported signatures and cases.
    • Added a public diagnostic identifier for this error.
  • Documentation

    • Added reference documentation covering the diagnostic, overload-resolution behavior, affected scenarios, and remediation options.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for ambiguous matches, more-specific overloads, parameter counts, inheritance, by-reference signatures, and runtime conversions.

…oads equally (TUnit0076)

When the Arguments of a [MethodDataSource] fit two overloads equally well,
reflection mode's binder throws AmbiguousMatchException while source-gen
mode calls one of them. The new TUnit0076 error mirrors the runtime
binder's most-specific-overload rules and reports the tie at compile time,
so neither mode reaches the runtime difference.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #7175 requires a compile-time error when [MethodDataSource] arguments match equally applicable overloads. TestDataAnalyzer adds TUnit0076 and reports it before normal data-source validation. The implementation models the stated runtime-binder candidate and specificity rules, and excludes null and generic cases. Focused tests cover the reported interface tie, opposite conversion ties, more-specific overloads, arity differences, overrides, inherited access, by-ref parameters, and runtime numeric conversions. The reported analyzer test run passed with 871 tests and 0 failures.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within issue #7175. They add the diagnostic, analyzer logic, resources, release tracking, focused tests, and documentation with sidebar linkage. These changes directly support consistent compile-time handling of ambiguous MethodDataSource overloads. No unrelated product behavior is shown in the reviewed change summary.

[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no new blocking issue was established.

Summary

Adds TUnit0076 to report when MethodDataSource arguments fit competing overloads equally well.

  • Method data sources now report overload ties as TUnit0076.

No new actionable issues were established in the changes since the previous review. The earlier private-base-method and numeric-conversion findings are addressed.

…te overloads

Skip private methods declared on a base type and overloads with by-ref
parameters, which Type.GetMethod never selects. Replace C#'s implicit
numeric conversions with the runtime's primitive widening table (no int
to decimal or nint, but byte to char), and accept T to Nullable<T> the
way Type.IsAssignableFrom does.
…the TUnit0076 check

A same-name generic method made the check return early, hiding a tie
between two non-generic overloads. The runtime binder never matches a
parameter typed by a method type parameter, so skip only those overloads
and let generic methods with concrete parameter types compete normally.

Review dispositions:

  • All review threads are fixed and resolved. The CodeRabbit thread on private base-class overloads (auto-resolved without a reply) is covered by dede1e1, the same fix as the Codex and Greptile threads.
  • The Codex, Greptile and CodeRabbit review summaries contain no findings outside those threads.
  • While verifying the numeric finding against the runtime, I also found two ties the analyzer missed (byte to char widening, and T to Nullable<T>). Both are now reported, with tests, in dede1e1.

Review: TUnit0076 ambiguous [MethodDataSource] overloads

I read the analyzer diff and the new tests, but I did not build the PR or run its tests. The code-review skill errored, so this is a manual review.

This is a solid change. It closes a real gap: source-gen mode silently picked an overload while reflection mode threw AmbiguousMatchException. The comments explain why each case is excluded. The diagnostic registration, release tracking, resources and tests are all in place.

What looks right:

  • The logic follows DefaultBinder: applicability, then FindMostSpecificMethod and FindMostSpecificType. It uses the runtime's primitive widening table instead of C#'s implicit conversions, so there is no int→decimal and byte→char is allowed.
  • It skips cases it can't judge: null arguments, overrides, inherited private members, by-ref parameters and generic parameters. When unsure, it reports nothing, so false positives are unlikely.
  • The tests cover the tie, the opposite-direction case, a more specific overload winning, differing parameter counts and overrides.

Minor suggestions, none blocking:

  1. The check runs for every [MethodDataSource] that has Arguments. ClassifyConversion is only called when there are two or more same-arity candidates, so the cost should be small. Early-exit before building argumentTypes when fewer than two same-name, same-arity methods exist. That avoids the LINQ allocations in the common case.
  2. The enum-to-primitive case is skipped, so some ambiguities go unreported. The comment says so. A test pinning that behaviour would stop someone later tightening it by mistake.
  3. FindAmbiguousOverloads mixes candidate filtering with the specificity check. Moving the filtering into a GetBinderCandidates helper would make each half easier to test and read.

Overall, LGTM.
