Summary

The TRX className for tests on generic classes differed between modes:

  • Before, source-generated: TUnit.TestProject.Bugs._7106.GenericClassMixedTypeRows1`
  • Before, reflection: ...GenericClassMixedTypeRows1[[System.Int32, System.Private.CoreLib, Version=10.0.0.0, ...]]and...[[System.String, ...]]`. Rows that inferred different type arguments were split across several class names.
  • After, both modes: TUnit.TestProject.Bugs._7106.GenericClassMixedTypeRows1`

Cause

The TRX className comes from MethodMetadata.Class.Type.FullName (TestExtensions.CreateCachedProperties). Source-generated mode emits ClassMetadata.Type = typeof(Class<>), the generic type definition. Reflection mode builds metadata for each closed instantiation, so FullName of the closed type includes assembly-qualified type arguments. The JSON output's ClassType had the same problem.

Fix

A new TestExtensions.GetReportedClassFullName maps a constructed generic type to its generic type definition before taking FullName. The TRX className and the JSON ClassType both use it. The result is the source-generated format, which #6433 already treats as spec-conformant: backtick arity, no type arguments in the type name. This also covers any source-generated path that hands over a closed type.

I left ClassMetadata.Type unchanged in reflection mode. Data-source resolution (TestClassTypeHelper, MethodDataSourceAttribute) needs the closed type there, so changing it could break more than it fixes. TestMethodIdentifierProperty.TypeName already uses Type.Name (Class1`, plus class-argument decoration per #6433), and that was the same in both modes already.

Tests

  • New Issue7151Tests (TUnit.Engine.Tests) checks that every TRX test definition for 4 generic classes in Bugs/_7106 has className Ns.Class1`. With the fix reverted, all 4 fail in reflection mode. With the fix, all 4 pass. Locally the AOT/source-gen variants skip (CI only).
  • Manual source-gen vs reflection comparison: ran TUnit.TestProject with --treenode-filter "/*/TUnit.TestProject.Bugs._7106/*/*" with and without --reflection and diffed the className attributes. All classes discovered in both modes now have identical names. The 3 extra classes in reflection mode are reflection-only by design (untyped class data sources).
  • Issue7106Tests, Issue7105Tests, JsonOutputTests, NestedExceptionTrxTests, JUnitReporterTests: all pass (non-skipped).
  • TUnit.Engine builds for all TFMs.

Fixes #7151

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Corrected TRX test results so generic test classes consistently report their generic type definition, including the expected generic arity marker.
    • Improved class name reporting for generic and non-generic test types.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for generic class names across multiple test execution modes.
    • Added validation for open, closed, and non-generic type name reporting.

…tion in TRX

Reflection mode builds each generic test class instantiation with the closed
type as ClassMetadata.Type, so the TRX className was Type.FullName of the
closed type, with assembly-qualified type arguments, and rows inferring
different type arguments were split across several class names.
Source-generated mode reports the generic type definition (Ns.Class`1).

Normalize constructed generic types to their generic type definition when
computing the TRX className and the JSON ClassType, so both modes report
the same name.

📝 Walkthrough

TRX class-name generation now reports the generic type definition name for constructed generic test classes. The helper is used for both TRX type-name generation and TestJson.ClassType. Tests cover generic and non-generic types, plus generic test scenarios.

GetReportedClassFullName returns the generic type definition name for constructed generic types and the full name for other types. Both TRX class-name paths use the helper. Unit and engine tests cover the reported names.

In reflection mode, JSON output can name the same generic test class two different ways. TRX class names are now consistent. Aligning the JSON class-hook type name before merging is a small change that avoids confusing consumers of the JSON report.

Explanation

Issue #7151 requires one TRX className for generic test classes in source-generated and reflection modes. GetReportedClassFullName maps constructed generic types to their generic type definitions. TestExtensions uses it for the TRX type name, and the added Issue7151Tests covers four generic classes through the reflection and AOT test modes. The helper tests cover closed, open, and non-generic types. The JSON path uses the same normalization, and ClassMetadata.Type remains unchanged for data-source resolution.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #7151. The JSON update applies the same class-name normalization to the related ClassType output. The new engine and unit tests verify the implementation. No unrelated production behavior or unrelated tests are present in the reviewed diff.

Summary

Generic test classes now use their generic type definition’s full name in TRX and JSON.

  • TRX and JSON report generic classes by their generic type definition.

Comment thread tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests/Issue7151Tests.cs
The TRX className and the JSON model's ClassType both use GetReportedClassFullName. The engine
test only observes the TRX, and the JSON model is not written to any output, so unit tests now pin
the helper for closed, open and non-generic types.

…nition too

The class-level JSON model still used ClassType.FullName, so in reflection mode it named a generic
test class differently from its tests' ClassType. It now uses GetReportedClassFullName as well.

Review dispositions for the bot summaries (on b3b9465).

  • CodeRabbit (JSON class-hook type name). Done in 04ac155. ClassHookContext.ToJsonModel now uses GetReportedClassFullName too, so the class entry and its tests name a generic class the same way. As I noted in the Greptile thread, the JSON model is not written to any output at the moment (JsonOutputCommandProvider is never registered), so this only keeps the model consistent. I commented on JSON output still uses assembly-qualified Type.FullName for parameter and return types #7201 about that.
  • CodeRabbit docstring coverage warning. No change. The repository does not require docstrings on every member, and the new helper already has one.
  • Greptile thread. Answered and resolved: unit tests for the helper were added in b3b9465.

Approving. The fix is small and targeted.

  • GetReportedClassFullName maps constructed generic types to their generic type definition. TRX className and JSON ClassType then match the source-generated format in both modes, with no assembly-qualified type arguments.
  • Leaving ClassMetadata.Type unchanged in reflection mode is the right call, since data-source resolution needs the closed type.
  • ClassHookContext.ToJsonModel now uses the helper too (04ac155), which addresses the earlier bot feedback.
  • Test coverage is good: unit tests for closed, open and non-generic types, plus the Issue7151Tests engine test over four generic classes across modes.

I could not run the code-review skill (it errored), so this is a manual read of the diff. I did not build or run the tests.

Minor, non-blocking: the helper is internal static on TestExtensions. If more reporters need it, a shared type-naming helper would be a better home than an extensions class. That isn't needed now.
