Review: fix(sourcegen) bind

[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no new actionable issue was established. SummaryFixes generated calls for generic tests with trailing arrays.
The previous multiple-token finding is fixed. thomhurst explicitly deferred inference from loose params values because the reflection invoker change belongs to PR #7094. Reviews (14) · Last reviewed commit: "fix(sourcegen): pass every CancellationT..." · Reviewed by Greptile |
Review of #7101I read the source diff but didn't build it or run the tests. The skill-based review tool errored, so this was a manual pass. I found no blocking issues. What looks good
Suggestions (non-blocking)
Overall this is a solid, well-tested fix. Approve from my side once CI is green. |

Fixes #7099
Problem
A generic test method whose last parameter is
params T[](or a plainT[]) did not compile in source-gen mode once it was closed through[GenerateGenericTest]or inferred from a leading argument:The generator wrote
new ConcreteType(typeof(T[]))into the parameter metadata, andinstance.Test<int>(CastHelper.Cast<T[]>(args[0]))into the invoker.Fix
The #7099 fix itself is in
TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator(the engine changes are listed under "Related fixes in this PR"):CodeGenerationHelpers.GenerateTypeInfo: an array of a type parameter is erased toConcreteType(typeof(object)), matching thetypeof(object)already used for the parameter'sType. No runtime code readsConcreteType.Typefor parameters, andParameterUsesMethodGenericTypestill returns false, which is what reflection mode does with its openT[].SubstituteTypeParametersnow closes array types (T[]becomesint[]).EmitConcreteInvokeBody: when the last data parameter collects trailing arguments, the invoker now uses the sameGenerateConcreteTestInvokerBodyas non-generic methods, with the closed method's parameters. Rows with zero, one or many values bind as they do forparams int[](Array.Empty<T>(), thenToTrailingArray, then packing). Other generic methods keep their current output, so no existing snapshot changed.Tests
GenericParamsArrayCompilationTestscompiles the generated output and asserts it has no errors. The snapshot harness only checks generator diagnostics. Shapes covered: zero, one and many values; a reference type; a leading parameter; an array as the only argument; a plain trailingT[]; a non-trailingT[]; a class type parameter; and inference from a leadingT. Before the fix it reported CS0246/CS1503 for every shape.Tests7099adds a snapshot oftests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/_7099/Tests.cs.TUnit.TestProjectfixtures,GenericParamsArrayTests(7 tests) andGenericClassParamsArrayTests(1 test) pass in both source-gen and reflection mode.Commands run:
TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator.Testsdotnet test: 747 total, 0 failed. The new tests also pass on net8.0, net9.0 and net472.TUnit.UnitTests: 1599 total, 0 failed.TUnit.TestProject(net10.0, source-gen): the_7099classes pass, and so doBugs._4440,GenericMatrixTests,GenericInstanceMethodDataSourceTestsandGenericConstraintValidationTests.Bugs._4431has 47 passing and 1 failing; the failure isCompositionPatternDoesNotWork_4431, which isExpectedResult.Failure.Review follow-up (fe482c9)
int[,]andT[,]bind as one value again. This applies to both generic and non-generic methods.M<T>(int count = 0, params T[] values)compiles.Derived : Base<int>) keepsint[]forT[].TestGenericTypeResolver) no longer tries to match loose params values againstT[].Test<T>(T first, params T[] rest)now infersTin both modes. Both modes also inferTfrom a lone array value.Bugs/_7099tests are[EngineTest(ExpectedResult.Pass)]and pass in both modes.Related fixes in this PR
Review rounds found neighbouring bugs on the same binding path. Each one is covered by
GenericParamsArrayCompilationTestsor theBugs/_7099fixtures:IsSZArray), soint[,]andT[,]bind as one value, for generic and non-generic methods.default(T[]).CancellationTokendeclared before the trailing array keeps its position, and does not shift the row index in the generic positional path.CancellationTokenstays a data parameter.ReflectionTestDataCollector) passesType.Missingfor omitted optional arguments, so declared defaults apply. It does not count the token as a data parameter.TestGenericTypeResolver) skips aCancellationTokenwherever it is declared when mapping row values to parameters for inference.Engine files touched:
ReflectionTestDataCollector.cs,ReflectionTestMetadata.csandTestGenericTypeResolver.cs.Type.Missingonly reachesReflectionTestMetadata.TestInvoker, which is always the collector's own invoker (CreateTestInvoker); dynamic tests useDynamicTestMetadataand never see it.Not in this PR
Inferring
Tonly from loose params values ([Arguments(1, 2, 3)] Test<T>(params T[] values)) is not supported in either mode. Reflection mode needs a change to the invoker inReflectionTestDataCollector.cs, which PR #7094 owns. That invoker defaults an unmappedTtoobject. Tracked in #7099.Summary by CodeRabbit
