Generic tests with constructor data declared on a base class silently discover zero tests in reflection mode. Include inherited class attributes when extracting data sources, both for generic inference and constructor metadata. Method attribute extraction keeps its existing declaration behavior. When a derived class and its base both declare inheritable data sources, reflection discovery includes both, following normal attribute inheritance.

Add focused runtime-row, direct-source comparison, explicit generic type, and inherited argument fixtures, with engine assertions for both reflection and source-generated/AOT behavior. Runtime-only rows without explicit generic arguments retain the source-generated inference error introduced by #7425.

Closes #7426

Validation:

  • Reproduced zero tests with the original extractor; the fixed inherited runtime-row fixture runs one passing test.
  • Ran each of four fixtures separately in reflection and source-generated mode: all expected successes and inference failures matched, including explicit-type success in both modes.
  • Built tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests for net10.0 successfully; execution left to CI per repository instructions.
  • Native AOT publish succeeded (dotnet publish tests/TUnit.TestProject -c Release -p:Aot=true --use-current-runtime -f net10.0). Ran all four filters separately against the published binary: explicit inherited sources and arguments each pass one test; untyped sources each report the expected compile-time inference failure. The full fixture project emits existing trimming warnings; none point to the changed extractor or new fixtures.

Follow-up: #7490 tracks compile-time inference from inherited [Arguments] rows without explicit types.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Data sources declared on a base class are now recognized during test discovery, including for generic tests.
    • Added coverage for inherited and directly declared runtime data sources, explicit generic tests, and inherited constructor arguments.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Fix inherited constructor data in reflection discovery" matches the main change. The raw summary shows ReflectionAttributeExtractor.ExtractDataSources now requests inherited custom attributes for Type providers. The linked objectives describe the same fix for generic-type inference and constructor metadata in reflection discovery. The title is specific and concise, and it does not describe anything absent from the changeset.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #7426 requires reflection discovery to use inherited constructor data when it infers generic test classes. The fix changes ReflectionAttributeExtractor.ExtractDataSources to call GetCustomAttributes(inherit: attributeProvider is Type). For a Type provider, base-class data-source attributes are now returned. This matches the reported defect, where inherit: false dropped the base [MethodDataSource]. Acceptance criteria:

  1. Reflection-mode inherited case: tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/_7426/Tests.cs defines InheritedRuntimeSource<T> deriving from DataSourceBase, which carries [MethodDataSource]. The fixture matches the issue reproduction. The author reports one passing test after the fix and zero before it.
  2. Regression and inference rules: tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests/Issue7426Tests.cs runs four filters. Runtime-only inherited and direct cases expect a compile-time inference failure in AOT mode. The explicit-type case ([GenerateGenericTest(typeof(int))]) and the inherited [Arguments] case expect one pass in both modes. This covers explicit generic type arguments.
  3. AOT and trimming: the change reuses the existing GetCustomAttributes API. It adds no new reflection pattern. The author reports a successful Native AOT publish and separate published-binary runs. I did not execute tests. This point rests on the author's reported validation and the source change.

Method extraction keeps inherit: false, as the PR description requires. Runtime-only rows without explicit generic arguments keep the source-generated inference error. This follows the #7425 scope. Inherited [Arguments] inference without explicit types is deferred to #7490, which is outside this PR.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-PR diff against the merge base has three parts:

  • src/TUnit.Engine/Discovery/ReflectionAttributeExtractor.cs: a 3-line change. It applies inherited attribute lookup only when the provider is a Type. Method providers keep their existing behavior. The change implements the #7426 objective directly.
  • tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/_7426/Tests.cs: fixtures for the inherited runtime-row, direct-source, explicit-type, and inherited-arguments cases. These fixtures support the regression coverage that #7426 requests.
  • tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests/Issue7426Tests.cs: engine assertions for reflection and AOT behavior. This test supports the same objective.

No change addresses unrelated behavior. The PR adds no documentation, release, or unrelated refactoring changes in the reviewed files. The PR description and the test fixtures match the extractor change.

Review: PR 7491 (inherited class data sources in reflection mode)

The fix looks correct and minimal. ExtractDataSources now passes inherit: attributeProvider is Type, so class-level data sources declared on a base class are picked up. Both class callers are covered: generic inference (ReflectionTestDataCollector.cs:532) and constructor metadata (:1763). The method callers still get inherit: false, so their behaviour is unchanged.

Observations (non-blocking):

  • Type.GetCustomAttributes(inherit: true) only returns base-class attributes whose AttributeUsage has Inherited = true. I didn't check that [Arguments] and [MethodDataSource] allow inheritance. The InheritedArguments and InheritedRuntimeSource fixtures exercise this, so CI will show it.
  • If a derived class declares its own data source and the base also has one, both now apply. That matches normal inheritance, but it is a behaviour change for existing hierarchies. A short note in the PR description would help.
  • Test precedence: testMode == TestMode.AOT && className is "A" or "B" parses correctly because or is a pattern combinator. Parenthesising the pattern, className is ("A" or "B"), would make that obvious to readers.
  • The PR notes that Native AOT publish validation is still pending. Please confirm it before merge. The reflection change shouldn't affect AOT, but the source-generated expectations in the test depend on it.

Good coverage overall: the fixtures cover runtime rows, a direct source, an explicit generic type and inherited arguments. The follow-up for compile-time inference is tracked in #7490. LGTM pending CI.

Review disposition for 1d559a2: both required reviewers completed positive reviews, and there are no inline threads. The PR description now clarifies that derived and inherited class data sources both apply. Arguments and MethodDataSource allow inheritance via AttributeUsage (Inherited defaults to true); the inherited fixtures cover each. The pattern expression already parses as intended, so the optional parentheses nit does not need a code change. Native AOT publish and all four separate published-binary filters were completed and are recorded in the PR validation section. Promoting this reviewed head to ready for CI.

Marked ready with head unchanged at 1d559a2 after positive Claude and Codex verdicts and disposition of all observations. Ready-for-review triggered Claude run 41624143591 and CI (.NET run 41624141950). Auto-merge is not armed yet: read the new Claude review and all review surfaces, then run scripts/Enable-AutoMerge.ps1 once that review passes. No code changed in this unit.

Review

The fix is small and targeted. GetCustomAttributes(inherit: attributeProvider is Type) makes class-level data sources follow inheritance and leaves the method path unchanged.

I checked the callers of ExtractDataSources in ReflectionTestDataCollector. The Type call sites (lines 532 and 1763) now include base-class sources. The MethodInfo sites (1059, 1191, 2245) keep inherit: false, so the index alignment between ExtractMethodDataSources and the row type arguments at ~1235 still holds.

Observations (non-blocking)

  • The is Type check inside a shared helper is a bit implicit. An explicit inherit parameter, or a separate ExtractClassDataSources, would make the intent clearer and stop a future non-Type caller from silently picking up the wrong behaviour. The comment you added covers this adequately for now.
  • In the engine test, testMode == TestMode.AOT && className is "A" or "B" parses correctly because or is a pattern combinator. It is easy to misread, though, so parentheses or className is ("A" or "B") would help.
  • The PR says duplicates are expected when both the derived class and its base declare inheritable sources. That matches normal attribute semantics, so I have no objection.

The fixtures cover the runtime-row, direct-source, explicit-generic and inherited-[Arguments] cases in both modes. The AOT inference-failure expectation is documented and tracked in #7490. Approving in spirit; CI for the engine tests is the remaining check.

Run 41624143591 completed successfully for current head 1d559a2; the earlier wait has cleared. Read all review bodies, inline comments/threads, and conversation comments. Claude and Codex have positive verdicts for this head. The new Claude observations are non-blocking: retain the documented Type-based inheritance policy and the correctly parsed pattern expression, as already dispositioned. The private-base-member finding has an evidence-based reply in its thread. No code changed; existing validation remains applicable. Remaining CI is still running; attempting to arm auto-merge under the repository gate.

The merge gate passed and scripts/Enable-AutoMerge.ps1 armed squash auto-merge for unchanged head 1d559a2. All findings now have a disposition and the inline thread is resolved. Waiting for remaining CI, including .NET run 41624141950; no on-hold label or further code changes are needed.

The earlier blocker has cleared: .NET run 41624141950 succeeded for head 1d559a2. All current CI, including engine tests and AOT on all three operating systems, passed. Re-read all review surfaces: Claude and Codex approve this head, and CodeRabbit withdrew its private-base-member finding in the resolved thread. Its remaining generic docstring-coverage warning is non-blocking: the changed internal extractor has comments explaining the inheritance policy, and the added fixtures document their expectations. No further code changes are warranted. Assert-PrGreen passed; merging through Merge-Pr.ps1.
