WalkthroughThe speculative model now delegates target-logit generation to the spec worker. The model engine gathers vocabulary-sharded logits before post-processing when scheduled requests require it, with an attention-DP restriction. ChangesSpeculative target logits

L0 #62806 on 70ae504 stopped before any test ran. Both builds passed, then the A10 test pod was refused at admission ("Driver not certified"), Release-Check lost its Jenkins agent during checkout, and the SBSA single-GPU job was aborted by fail-fast. @juney-nvidia could you re-run CI when you have a moment? Thanks. |
…target logits SpecDecOneEngineForCausalLM asks its spec worker for the target logits (SpecWorkerBase.target_logits) instead of calling the logits processor itself. The default is the logits processor's fp32 [rows, vocab], so no worker changes behaviour. A worker whose acceptance reads another layout can override it; when its forward then returns this TP rank's vocabulary shard as "logits", it sets "logits_vocab_shard", and the engine all-gathers the logits before running logits post-processors (only when a scheduled request has one). 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Store the gathered logits in outputs.
When a scheduled request has a logit post-processor, allgather creates a new tensor. The processors modify logits_tensor, but outputs["logits"] still holds the TP shard. The returned logits therefore omit the processor's changes. Assign the gathered, trimmed tensor to outputs["logits"] before applying processors.
Add a regression case in tests/unittest/_torch/speculative/hw_agnostic/test_spec_worker_target_logits.py that applies a processor and checks the returned outputs["logits"] for both full vocabulary width and the modified value. Gather-shape checks alone cannot catch the lost update. As per path instructions, “Test coverage review is additive.”

Thanks. I checked this against 2e598e1: on this path nothing downstream reads outputs["logits"] after the
post-processors run. Writing the gathered tensor back would not change any output.
- Only a one-model spec worker can set
logits_vocab_shard. It does so throughSpecWorkerBase.target_logits
(speculative/interface.py:1651). - The sampler never reads the logits. Every one-model mode uses
SpecSampler
(speculative/utils.py:655-671). Itssample_asyncreads onlynew_tokens,new_tokens_lens,
next_draft_tokensandnext_new_tokensfrom the outputs (speculative/spec_sampler_base.py:419-424). Those are
the tokens the worker already accepted insideforward(for examplespeculative/dspark.py:823-824). - No logits are returned either.
SpecSampler.validate_requestrejectsreturn_context_logits,
return_generation_logitsand logprobs at admission (spec_sampler_base.py:170-190), soHandleLogitsreturns no
logits for these requests. - The post-processors only observe. They run after the worker's acceptance (
pyexecutor/model_engine.py:6366),
so on this path they see the full-vocabulary logits read-only, as thetarget_logitsdocstring states
(interface.py:1662). Main's full-vocabulary path is no different: the in-place edits land inoutputs["logits"],
and nothing reads them there either.
WONTFIX in this PR, with no code change. Rejecting logits post-processors at admission on the one-model path, like
the other logits-side features in _validate_unsupported_logits_processors, would be a separate change.

CI note: the L0 failures on this head (https://prod.blsm.nvidia.com/sw-tensorrt-top-1/job/LLM/job/main/job/L0_MergeRequest_PR/62951/) are failing on main too. This PR didn't cause them.
These can be ignored for this PR. We'll rerun once main is fixed. |

Main's NVIDIA#19896 (2681ed1) moved PyTorchModelEngine's decoder execution into DecoderRunner (engine/runners/decoder/runner.py) and the encoder-decoder fast path into EncoderDecoderRunner, so this branch's model_engine.py changes conflicted. model_engine.py is main's; the branch's changes move to where that code now lives: - DecoderRunner, from NVIDIA#19816 (U1): the step-copy gather, the staged previous batch / position indices, gather_ids written by copy_to_device_if_changed, no num_accepted_draft_tokens buffer, and the CUDA graphs' static inputs; from NVIDIA#19814 (U3): the gather of vocabulary-sharded logits for post-processors. - EncoderDecoderRunner: its previous_batch_indices_cuda write clears the staged batch indices. - The two tests that called the moved members call the runner. Description
In one-model speculative decoding,
SpecDecOneEngineForCausalLM.forwardcomputes the target logits with the logitsprocessor (fp32, full vocabulary) and hands them to the spec worker's acceptance. A worker whose acceptance can read a
cheaper layout has no way to ask for it. For example, a TP worker that reduces row maxima across ranks itself can skip
the LM head's all-gather and fp32 cast.
This PR makes that layout the worker's choice:
SpecWorkerBase.target_logits(hidden_states, lm_head, logits_processor, attn_metadata, spec_metadata, draft_model), whichSpecDecOneEngineForCausalLM.forwardcalls in place of the logits processor. The defaultreturns the logits processor's fp32
[rows, vocab]with the same arguments as before, so no existing workerchanges behaviour. Models that call the logits processor and the spec worker themselves (Gemma4, Step3p7, the
ModelingV2 DeepSeek-R1 target) are unchanged; a target that wants a worker's layout calls the hook itself.
"logits"fromforwardsets"logits_vocab_shard": Truein its outputs. The contract, in the hook's docstring:schedules its own requests there);
forward,as it does today for every one-model worker;
decoding.
PyTorchModelEngine._execute_logit_post_processorsall-gathers such logits before running logits post-processors,only when a scheduled request has one, and drops the vocabulary's TP padding (as the LM head's own gather does).
Under attention DP it raises instead of entering a collective the ranks may not all reach.
No worker overrides the hook in this PR. The first user is the Kimi K3 DSpark worker (vocabulary-sharded
acceptance); it lands separately.

SpecWorkerBase.target_logits(...)provides a default path to the logits processor and lets workers supply target logits in their acceptance layout.SpecDecOneEngineForCausalLM.forwarduses the hook. When a worker marks logits as vocabulary-sharded, the engine gathers them before running scheduled logit post-processors and trims TP padding. It skips the gather when no scheduled request has a post-processor. Attention DP is unsupported for this layout. Workers must apply guided-decoding bitmasks to their shard or reject guided decoding. No worker override is included, so this change does not add a production consumer for the sharded-logit path.

The added CPU-only
test_spec_worker_target_logits.pycovers default delegation and argument forwarding, worker-hook integration, shard gathering, padding removal, skipped gathers, and the attention-DP error path. No test-list change is reported. The unit test is not an integration-list entry. Coverage verdict: sufficient for the hook and gather behavior described here. The author reports 7 passing CPU-only tests. The author also reports GB200 results of 492 passed, 34 failed, and 8 skipped in
hw_agnostic; other reported speculative and engine test groups had the same results on the PR branch and main. The author attributes the reported failures to issues also seen on main.Per-File QA Perspective
