The loop runs
rm -rfon the destination beforecp -a. Ifcpfails midway, set -eaborts the script and the destination has no driver. The DockerRUNfails in that case, so the image is not produced. The risk is small, but copying to a temporary path and then usingmvremoves the window. Also,
lib.real-nvgpuis removed even when the source lacks it. This matches the header comment ("where present"), so this part is fine.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

@tburt-nv @chzblych @yiqingy0, could one of you review this? It needs a It is step 3 of NVBug 6919819. Steps 1 (#20250) and 2 (#20277, merged) are the other two. The change keeps the NGC 26.09 base and swaps only the CUDA forward-compat driver in the CI images back to the 26.08 one, because 615.71.09 slows the unchanged trtllm-gen context-FMHA cubin by 7-13% per call on GB200. The evidence table and the CI triage are in the description and in the comments above. The images are already built and retagged to non-staging |

@coderabbitai Thanks for the nitpick. I'm leaving the script as is.
A script change would also mean rebuilding and retagging all five CI images this PR pins. |

The temporary-copy change is unnecessary for this build-only use. I withdraw the suggestion. ✏️ Learnings added

Summary
The NGC PyTorch 26.09 base image (adopted in #19679) ships a newer CUDA forward-compatibility user-mode driver:
/usr/local/cuda-13.4/compat/lib.real/libcuda.so.615.71.09, where 26.08 shipped615.65.02. Every process in the container loads that compat driver ahead of the host driver. Under 615.71.09, the unchanged trtllm-gen context FMHA cubin runs 7–13% slower per call on GB200. That costsaggr_upload-ctx_only-gb200_deepseek-r1-fp4_128k8k_con1_ctx1_pp8_gen1_tep8_eplb0_mtp3_ccb-NIXLabout 6% Total Token Throughput (https://nvbugs/6919405).This PR keeps the 26.09 base image and its CUDA 13.4 toolkit, and swaps only the compat driver libraries for the 26.08 ones:
docker/Dockerfile.multi: newCUDA_COMPAT_TAGbuild arg (default26.08-py3) and acuda_compatstage from${BASE_IMAGE}:${CUDA_COMPAT_TAG}. The devel stage runsinstall_cuda_compat.shfrom that stage's/usr/local, unlessCUDA_COMPAT_TAG == BASE_TAG.docker/common/install_cuda_compat.sh(new): replaceslib.real(andlib.real-nvgpuwhere present) under/usr/local/cuda-<ver>/compat, drops the per-host.checkedmarkers recorded against the old driver, then runsldconfigand checks the result. It refuses to run if the source image does not ship the same CUDAmajor.minor.docker/Makefile: passesCUDA_COMPAT_TAG. Therockylinux8/ubuntu22/ubuntu24targets, which build onnvcr.io/nvidia/cuda, set it to their ownBASE_TAGand so keep their compat driver. The 615.65.02 compat package is not on the public CUDA apt repo, which only has
cuda-compat-13-4 615.71.09. So the driver comes from the 26.08 NGC image itself, the same way the triton stage already copies from the tritonserver image.Evidence (GB200, oci-hsg, CI wheels, 3 reps per arm unless noted)
/usr/local/cuda-13.4/compatfrom 26.08libcuda.so.615.65.02, and the run recovers the full gap.fmhaSm100aKernel_QkvE4m3OBfloat16HQk192HV128SeparateQkvCausalVarSeqQ256Kv128PersistentContextis +6.9% to +12.7% per call. It is the same cubin with the same grid, block, smem and registers, and it is ~83% of each stage's non-NCCL GPU time at 131k tokens. Every other kernel class is within ±3%.install_cuda_compat.shinside the published 26.09 TRT-LLM image. It replaced the driver, the NGC shell-init compat check reportedCUDA Driver OK, and torch mappedlibcuda.so.615.65.02.Full triage, with per-rank kernel tables and isolation runs, is on https://nvbugs/6919405.
Test Coverage
Done:
install_cuda_compat.shlayer (BASE_TAG=26.09-py3 CUDA_COMPAT_TAG=26.08-py3). The Rocky 8 and SBSA wheel images keep their own driver (CUDA_COMPAT_TAG == BASE_TAG).sw-tensorrt-llm-docker-local/tensorrt-llmwithscripts/rename_docker_images.py 64146 20252 --commit 33d6b6f, run against main's copy ofjenkins/current_image_tags.properties. That file now points at the…-202610150933-20252tags, and notensorrt-llm-stagingtags remain in the PR._CUDA_COMPAT_STATUS=CUDA Driver OK. None of that run's failures came from the driver; they are listed in the PR comments.Pending:
/bot run --disable-fail-faston the retagged images.GB200-8_GPUs-2_Nodes-PyTorch-PerfSanity-Node2-GPU8-Post-Merge-2; the ctx_only DSR1 PP8 case should reach ≥5650 tok/s.release/1.3 picked up the same 26.09 image in #20146 and shows the same step; the cherry-pick is #20397.
