Description

The Kimi-K3 helix gen worker crashed in its first warmup forward with CUDA_ERROR_ILLEGAL_ADDRESS on every rank. It surfaced at helixAllToAll.cu:748, the next synchronizing call. With CUDA_LAUNCH_BLOCKING=1, all 16 ranks fault inside the CuTe DSL fp8 MLA decode kernel (H=96, 7 query tokens, B=1).

The cause was the page table CuteDslMlaFmha._run_mla_decode passed in. It kept max_num_sequences - num_contexts columns, and since #19338 the kernel launches one request per column.

#20256 (now on main) already limits the page table to this batch's rows. After rebasing onto it, this PR keeps the parts #20256 does not cover:

  • sequence_lengths sliced to the batch too (cute_dsl_mla.py), so every operand the kernel receives has the same batch size.
  • A batch-size check in CuteDSLNVMlaDecodeBlackwellRunner.forward. It raises if page_table, q_latent or o disagrees with cache_seqs on the batch dimension, so a mismatched caller fails with a message instead of reading out of bounds. The AutoTuner's tuning-input pre-hook rebuilds all of them at the same batch, so tuning is unaffected.
  • A regression test for the bug [https://nvbugs/6921137][fix] Fix CuTe MLA page-table batch bounds #20256 fixed, which shipped without one.

Test Coverage

  • New test_cute_dsl_mla_decode_batch_below_max_num_sequences (fails on the pre-[https://nvbugs/6921137][fix] Fix CuTe MLA page-table batch bounds #20256 slice) (tests/unittest/_torch/attention/test_cute_dsl_mla_helix.py, bf16 and fp8, B=1 and B=3):
    • Drives CuteDslMlaFmha._run_mla_decode with a 32-slot kv_cache_block_offsets at the K3 helix verify-group shape: H=96, 1 + 6 draft tokens, per-token kv_bounds.
    • Checks every token against a reference softmax.
    • Runs in the existing unittest/_torch/attention entries of l0_b200.yml / l0_gb300_multi_gpus.yml.
    • Passed on GB300 together with the existing tests in that file: 8 passed.
  • GB300 (oci-aga), standalone kernel grid on the 1.4.0rc0 wheel at d7882af, with the 26.09 image:
    • Before the fix: every shape faults with the wrapper's full-width table, across H=96/128, S=1/4/6/7/8, split_kv 1/12, persistent or not, with or without kv_bounds / softmax stats.
    • After the fix: the same shapes with the table cut to the batch pass, 8/8, max abs error ≤ 0.003 vs reference.
    • The runner's new check rejects the old full-width table.
  • GB300 end to end: aggr_upload-gen_only_no_context-gb300_kimi-k3-fp4-dspark_agentx_con88_ctx16_dwdp16_gen1_helix16_bs32_dspark6_ccb-NIXL from [None][test] Kimi-K3 and MiniMax-M3 AgentX perf-sanity cases, AgentX single-phase lanes, drop gpt-oss #20163, 4 nodes, with this patch applied to the installed wheel: the warmup forward that crashed before (attention shape num_tokens=7, num_gen_requests=1) completes on all 16 ranks, with no illegal address, no traceback and no poisoned KV cache manager. The server reaches Application startup complete, serves requests, and the AgentX client starts the trace replay. Without the patch, the same lane on the same wheel fails at that warmup step on all 16 ranks.

Walkthrough

The MLA decode path now limits sequence metadata and page-table rows to the active batch. The runner checks related tensor batch dimensions, and a GPU test covers batches smaller than metadata capacity.

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: bowenfu

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to efd5d

This change fixes MLA decode warmup failures when the batch is smaller than the maximum sequence count. The new shape check does not cover the rope query tensor, so a shorter rope query could still reach the kernel and cause an invalid read. The mismatch error also has no test. Both are small follow-ups, and the main fix is otherwise ready to merge.

Test the new batch-mismatch error.

The added decode test uses matching tensor dimensions, so it cannot detect a regression that removes this guard. Add a case in tests/unittest/_torch/attention/test_cute_dsl_mla_helix.py with a page table wider than cache_seqs. Assert that forward raises RuntimeError before kernel launch. As per path instructions, flag “a new or changed validation rule” with “no meaningful test.”

…l Kimi K3 MoE supports DWDP

All 4 Kimi-K3 AgentX configs use a DWDP16 ctx side, and Kimi K3 MoE does
not support DWDP yet: KimiK3MoERuntime._routed_moe_model_config raises
NotImplementedError("Kimi K3 packed-checkpoint streaming does not
support DWDP.") at ctx model init. So the 4 e2e and 4 ctx_only lanes
fail on every post-merge run, holding 42 and 16 GB300 nodes while they
do. A waives.txt SKIP would not release those nodes: it is applied by
pytest, after Slurm has already allocated the stage.

Remove those lanes until the model supports DWDP:
- the 4 e2e entries, their 3 CTX16 stages and lists;
- the 4 ctx_only entries, the Node4-GPU16 stage and its list;
- their .test_durations entries.

The configs, the DWDP ctx launch path and its unit tests stay, so the
lanes can come back unchanged. The 4 gen_only_no_context lanes stay: they
do not start a ctx server, and with the CuTe DSL MLA decode fix (NVIDIA#20260)
the Kimi-K3 gen worker serves on GB300.

…test

NVIDIA#20256 limited the page table CuteDslMlaFmha._run_mla_decode passes to
the CuTe DSL MLA decode kernel to this batch's generation rows; with
max_num_sequences columns the kernel launched one request per column and
read q, the output and the sequence lengths past their ends (illegal
address in the first Kimi-K3 helix warmup forward on GB300).

On top of that:
- Slice sequence_lengths to the batch as well, so every operand the
kernel receives has the same batch size.
- CuteDSLNVMlaDecodeBlackwellRunner.forward now raises if page_table, q
or the output disagrees with cache_seqs on the batch dimension, so a
mismatched caller fails with a message instead of reading out of
  bounds.
- Add test_cute_dsl_mla_decode_batch_below_max_num_sequences: runs
  _run_mla_decode with a 32-slot block table and a batch of 1 or 3 at
  the Kimi-K3 helix verify-group shape (H=96, 7 query tokens, per-token
kv_bounds), bf16 and fp8, against a reference. It fails on the
  pre-NVIDIA#20256 slice and passes now.

Closing in favor of #20256, which merged as e87862c and makes the same page-table bound in CuteDslMlaFmha._run_mla_decode, so this branch now conflicts with main. The crash it targeted (CuTe DSL MLA decode reading past the active batch since #19338) is fixed on main by #20256.

Not carried over from this PR: the sequence_lengths[:batch_size] slice, the batch-size check in CuteDSLNVMlaDecodeBlackwellRunner.forward, and the test_cute_dsl_mla_decode_batch_below_max_num_sequences unit test. They are hardening only and not needed to fix the crash.
