Walkthrough

scanblocks now accepts an optional filter_false_positives setting and checks block-filter matches against block and undo data when enabled. Wallet processing marks descendants of inactive coinbase transactions abandoned. The overview page hides transaction rows beyond its requested visible count and reapplies row visibility after filter-model changes. Other changes update block-file handling, UTXO snapshot includes, CI comments, and functional tests.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 62bab

Resolve repeated wallet processing and missing descendant notifications before merging, or explicitly accept their performance and display-consistency risks. Large wallets also retain a full transaction-row update on each insertion. The pruning-test and model-reset concerns are addressed.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 62bab

Wallet recovery now updates an entire descendant transaction graph. Repeated graph visits can greatly amplify work while wallet operations are locked, and failures during persistence can leave only part of the transition recorded. Block-scan verification remains optional and preserves existing storage checks. No new signing authority or authentication bypass was demonstrated.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new inactive-coinbase traversal queues a wallet spender separately for every output it spends, without a visited set. A chain where each child spends two outputs of its parent doubles processing at successive levels, allowing a small transaction graph to cause exponentially many writes and reconciliations under cs_wallet. This threatens wallet-operation availability when the coinbase becomes inactive. Reachability requires a wallet-known descendant graph and an orphaning or invalidation trigger; an unauthenticated remote attack was not established. The existing RecursiveUpdateTxState uses deduplicated transaction hashes.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Automatic descendant abandonment mutates memory before each write, ignores descendant write failures, and does not explicitly make the transition atomic. A failure or interruption can therefore leave only a subset persisted, while a successful final root write does not establish descendant persistence. Restart reconstructs spend tracking from stored states, so wallet spendability can differ from the pre-restart state. Normal reload assertions do not cover this failure mode, and the inspected loading path does not replay descendant abandonment. Similar unchecked writes exist in older recursive updates; the PR extends their exposure to this automatic recovery transition.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated scope is the selected wallet's state, persistence, and operation availability, plus disk-read load on the node serving scanblocks. Repeated traversal can hold that wallet's lock for excessive work. Broader service impact and deployment-specific RPC exposure are not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Transaction relationships influence the descendant worklist through recorded inputs. Exploiting work amplification requires repeated-parent or shared-descendant transactions to enter the wallet's tracked graph and its originating coinbase to become inactive. Transaction admission retains wallet-involvement checks, so arbitrary unrelated transactions do not establish this attack path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — scanblocks retains a single-scan reservation released by its destructor, including exception exits. Verification is opt-in, pruning and unreadable undo data produce RPC errors, and disk reads occur outside the short cs_main pruning checks. Cancellation remains checked in the outer scan loop, not within each candidate's verification.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Wallet locking contains concurrent map mutation, but does not make the multi-record transition durable or atomic. The successful single-descendant reload test provides normal-path evidence, not assurance for shared graphs, interrupted processing, or ignored write failures. Those gaps matter because restored spendability is reconstructed from persisted transaction states.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bound descendant processing by unique transaction hashes and give abandonment an explicit failure policy covering checked writes, durable completion or recoverable interruption, in-memory reconciliation, and descendant notifications. Validate that policy with shared-descendant and interrupted-persistence scenarios.

Reconcile inputs when abandoning a descendant.

If a descendant spent another wallet coin alongside the orphaned reward, AddToSpends removed that coin from setWalletUTXO. Line 1103 abandons the descendant, but MarkInputsDirty does not restore the coin. Call ReconcileWalletUTXOs(desc_tx->tx, batch) after the state change. Notify observers for changed descendants as RecursiveUpdateTxState does; the later notification covers only the coinbase.

@knst, thanks for the clarification. The supplied code now calls ReconcileWalletUTXOs(desc_tx->tx, batch) for each abandoned descendant. This addresses the setWalletUTXO concern.

One part remains: the loop does not notify observers when a descendant changes state. The later NotifyTransactionChanged call covers only the coinbase. Add a CT_UPDATED notification for each changed descendant, as RecursiveUpdateTxState() does.

Preliminary review — Phase 1 blocker gate

Verified the findings against head d251934. The new pruning test uses a Bitcoin-specific filter collision that does not match Dash's regtest genesis; an independent calculation confirms the mismatch. The CI backport omission is explicitly documented in its commit message and does not require another review comment.

Validated blockers were found by the Phase-1 review and confirmed by a fresh verifier. Phase 2 is deferred until a fresh same-head revalidation clears the blocker gate.

In `test/functional/feature_pruning.py`:
- [BLOCKING] test/functional/feature_pruning.py:513: Use the Dash genesis filter collision in test_scanblocks_pruned
  This newly added test retains Bitcoin's precomputed false-positive script, which does not collide with Dash's regtest genesis filter. Using the repository's SipHash implementation and Dash's genesis hash, the genesis output maps to 434268, while this script maps to 426531. Consequently, scanblocks returns no relevant block and the first assertion fails; the accurate-mode call also cannot reach the expected pruned-block error because the filter does not match. Replace this constant with the Dash-specific collision already used and dynamically verified in rpc_scanblocks.py, which maps to 434268. This mismatch was independently reproduced with a Python hash calculation, not a full functional-test run.

Resolved (re-reviewed at 7c026b78): The test now uses 1400000000000000000000000000000000000ad23b at line 513, replacing the incompatible Bitcoin vector. This value collides with the Dash regtest genesis basic-filter element, so the test exercises the intended filter false-positive path.

Withdrawn (re-reviewed at 62bab134): Your test already uses the correct Dash collision, including at the previously reviewed head. I independently calculated the ranged hashes as 434268 for both the supplied script and Dash regtest genesis output, so the earlier finding was mistaken rather than subsequently fixed.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

The backport introduces three in-scope blocking issues. Abandoning orphaned coinbase descendants does not restore wallet UTXOs or notify observers, accurate scanblocks matching does not apply basic-filter output exclusions, and the pruning test is not prepared for builds without wallet support.

  This traversal marks each descendant abandoned and calls MarkInputsDirty, but it never calls ReconcileWalletUTXOs. AddToSpends removed each descendant's inputs from setWalletUTXO when the transaction was first inserted; after the descendant becomes abandoned, IsSpent no longer considers that abandoned transaction a spend, but the inputs remain absent from the wallet UTXO set until the wallet is reloaded. The traversal also changes descendant states without notifying transaction observers, unlike RecursiveUpdateTxState.

In `src/rpc/blockchain.cpp`:
- [BLOCKING] src/rpc/blockchain.cpp:2844-2846: Exclude OP_RETURN outputs from accurate scan matching
  BasicFilterElements excludes empty output scripts and scripts beginning with OP_RETURN, but CheckBlockFilterMatches compares every transaction output against the requested needles. If an OP_RETURN needle collides with an included basic-filter element, MatchAny selects the block and this exact-match pass then incorrectly accepts the excluded output as a real match. That violates filter_false_positives=true, which should return only blocks containing actual basic-filter elements.

In `test/functional/feature_pruning.py`:
- [BLOCKING] test/functional/feature_pruning.py:490-500: Synchronize node 5 when wallet support is disabled
  Node 5 is connected and synchronized only inside wallet_test(), which is skipped when wallet support is not compiled. The unconditional test_scanblocks_pruned() call therefore runs against node 5 at genesis height. The Dash-specific collision makes the non-accurate scan find genesis, but accurate matching filters out that collision and returns normally instead of reaching the expected pruned-data error. The test fails in no-wallet builds.

Resolved (re-reviewed at 62bab134): Confirmed your added ReconcileWalletUTXOs call restores eligible inputs for every abandoned descendant, resolving the Dash-specific UTXO issue. Identical to upstream and still so on master. A needle starting with OP_RETURN that appears in the block is a real match of the block contents, only not an indexed one. No Dash-specific reason to diverge.

Withdrawn (re-reviewed at 62bab134): You're right: the second pass verifies block contents, not basic-filter membership, so an OP_RETURN script actually present in the block is a real content match. My earlier request imposed a restriction that this helper does not require.

🔴 Blocking: Synchronize node 5 when wallet support is disabled

Node 5 is connected and synchronized only inside wallet_test(), which is skipped when wallet support is not compiled. The unconditional test_scanblocks_pruned() call therefore runs against node 5 at genesis height. The Dash-specific collision makes the non-accurate scan find genesis, but accurate matching filters out that collision and returns normally instead of reaching the expected pruned-data error. The test fails in no-wallet builds.

Fixed by backporting bitcoin#34185, which moves the node 5 sync out of the wallet-only path.

Resolved (re-reviewed at 62bab134): Confirmed your bitcoin#34185 backport connects and synchronizes node 5 in run_test() before the wallet-support conditional. The unconditional pruning scan now has that synchronization in no-wallet builds as well.

5ca7a7b rpc: Return accurate results for scanblocks (Aurèle Oulès)

Pull request description:

  Implements bitcoin#26322.
  Adds a `filter_false_positives` mode to `scanblocks` to accurately verify results from blockfilters.

  If the option is enabled, pre-results given by blockfilters will be filtered out again by checking vouts and vins of all transactions of the relevant blocks against the given descriptors.

  ### Master
  ```bash
  When a block is reorged out of the main chain, any descendants of the coinbase will no longer be valid. Currently they are only marked as inactive, which means that our balance calculations will still include them. In order to be excluded from the balance calculation, they need to either be abandoned or conflicted. This PR goes with the abandoned method.
  Note that even when they are included in balance calculations, coin selection will not select outputs belonging to these transactions because they are not in the mempool.
1100-1119: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Visit each descendant only once.
The loop pushes a descendant on the stack every time a path reaches it. It has no visited set. A descendant reachable through several parent outputs is processed once per path. Each pass calls batch.WriteTx, MarkInputsDirty and ReconcileWalletUTXOs. Diamond-shaped transaction graphs make the work grow exponentially while cs_wallet is held.
Track visited txids and skip a transaction that was already processed. RecursiveUpdateTxState uses a done set for the same reason.
08209c0 Correctly limit overview transaction list (John Moffett)
Pull request description:
  Fixes dashpay#703
  The way the main overview page limits the number of transactions displayed (currently 5) is not an appropriate use of Qt. Our subclassed transaction sort/filter proxy model returns a maximum of `5` in `rowCount()`. However, the model itself actually may hold significantly more. While this has _worked_, it breaks the contract of `rowCount()`.
  If `bitcoin-qt` is run with a DEBUG build of Qt, it'll result in an assert-crash in certain relatively common situations (see dashpay#703 for details). Instead of artificially limiting the `rowCount()` in the subclassed filter, we can hide/unhide the rows in the displaying `QListView` upon any changes in the sorted proxy filter.
  I loaded a wallet with 20,000 transactions and did not notice any performance differences between master and this branch.
  For reference, this is the list I'm referring to:
Pull request description:
  Fixes bitcoin#34175
  In `feature_pruning`, the`wallet_test` doesn't require any specific wallet functionality and this test is important for one of next ones (`test_scanblocks_pruned`). The reason is that it synchronizes the node 5 and, without this sync, `test_scanblocks_pruned` will fail since we expect `scanblocks` to fail due to `Block not available (pruned data)` and it doesn't happen without this sync.
Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
No actionable in-scope findings remain at the exact reviewed head: the pruning synchronization and Dash wallet UTXO fixes are present, and the OP_RETURN and genesis-collision findings do not apply. The omitted bitcoin#35070 validation fix is explicitly outside the selected test/documentation backport and is recorded separately as a pre-existing follow-up. Python parsing, shell syntax, diff checks, and an independent genesis-filter collision calculation passed; runtime suites and Qt compilation were not rerun.
  • Triage: normal by gpt-6.1-sol (effort low) — The diff spans wallet behavior, blockchain RPCs, pruning and UTXO snapshot handling, Qt UI, and CI/tests, but it does not clearly introduce a large intricate change to consensus, cryptography, peer-facing deserialization, or storage migration surfaces.
Out-of-scope follow-up suggestions (1)
These are valid observations, but they are outside this PR's scope and should be handled in separate issues or author/maintainer-requested PRs rather than blocking this review.
  • Track the remaining unlinked-block ordering fix separately — Dash still has the direct m_blocks_unlinked insertions and sequence-ID update behavior addressed by bitcoin#35070's validation commits. Duplicate entries can cause the same block index to be processed again while its ordering key is used by setBlockIndexCandidates. These paths are unchanged from the review base, and commit 62bab13 explicitly selects only the independent test/documentation commit, so this is not a blocker for the advertised partial backport.
    • Follow-up: Track a separate backport of bitcoin#35070's validation safety changes, preserving Dash's ChainLock-conflict handling.
Pull request description:
  ## Issue being fixed or feature implemented
  Backports for v24.0.0-rc.3. `v24.0.x` was cut at the v24.0.0-rc.2 tag (1e239d4), and develop has since moved to 24.1.0 (#7775), so rc.3 is built from this branch instead of being tagged on develop like rc.1 and rc.2.
  ## What was done?
  Cherry-picked (`git cherry-pick -m1 -x`) every develop merge since rc.2 that carries `backport-candidate-24.0.x`, plus #7778, which #7807's test needs. They are in develop merge order:
  - #7778 test: use single-member in functional tests: feature_mnehf, feature_notifications, p2p_instantsend (test-only. Needed because #7807's `feature_evo_shares_activation.py` depends on its `mine_quorum_single_member()` fix and fails without it.)
  - #7791 fix(net): request object votes from nPeersPerHashMax peers
  - #7781 fix(rpc): use a consistent tip height in quorum dkgstatus
  - #7789 fix(qt): report malformed lang/font settings instead of aborting at startup
  - #7779 fix!: report legacy evonode Platform addresses when listdiff changes its address
  - #7795 backport: bitcoin#34272, partial bitcoin#31650 (pass PSBT by const reference in PSBTInputSignedAndVerified)
  - #7783 fix: stop fish completion from re-running the typed dash-cli command
  - #7794 fix(wallet): floor the denomination gap threshold so rebalancing cannot oscillate
  - #7785 fix: restore the txindex requirement when governance validation is enabled
  - #7787 fix: only sign EHF signals inside the deployment's start/timeout window
  - #7790 fix: guard cached governance object flags with the object lock
  - #7793 backport: partial bitcoin#28868 (wallet: reload wallet if migration exited early, keep mixed watchonly txs)
  - #7786 fix(net): keep a dedicated onion listener when -bind is given and correct the bind release note. Includes partial bitcoin#36170 (5f40d56). Upstream's dedicated-onion-bind changes to `feature_torcontrol.py` and `p2p_private_broadcast.py` are not included, because those tests depend on upstream commits (5693833, e74d54e) that Dash does not have.
  - #7796 backport: bitcoin#26720 (remaining), partial bitcoin#29523: weight-check the knapsack exact-match selection
  - #7803 fix: return non-zero amount of accounts after sethdseed
  - #7776 fix: keep a pending ProUpServTx across a registrar update that keeps the operator key
  - #7807 feat(consensus): hold EvoNode shares and multiple payouts behind a new evo_shares deployment
  One pick needed conflict resolution, in a test only, described in its commit message: #7793, `test/functional/wallet_migration.py`. `test_conflict_txs()` comes from bitcoin#28542 (#7762), which is not on this branch, so it is left out. The C++ part of #7793 is identical to develop.
  Merged since rc.2 but intentionally not included: #7775 (24.1 version bump), #7260 and #7804 (new Qt feature and its CI fix), #7584 (refactor), routine upstream backports #7257, #7759, #7762, #7768, #7788, #7801, and test/CI-only changes #7777 and #7797.
  No version change is needed. `configure.ac` is already 24.0.0 with `CLIENT_VERSION_IS_RELEASE` false, so the build takes its version string from the `v24.0.0-rc.3` tag, as it did for rc.2.
  ## How Has This Been Tested?
  Built on macOS arm64 against depends with `--enable-debug --enable-werror` (dashd, dash-qt, tests).
  - `make check`: all unit test suites pass, including `test_dash-qt`.
  - Functional tests, all passing: `feature_evo_shares_activation.py`, `feature_masternode_shares.py`, `feature_mnehf.py`, `feature_governance.py --descriptors`, `feature_governance_objects.py`, `feature_governance_txindex_devnet.py`, `feature_proxy.py`, `feature_notifications.py`, `feature_llmq_connections.py`, `feature_llmq_chainlocks_automatic.py`, `feature_llmq_singlenode.py`, `p2p_instantsend.py`, `rpc_blockchain.py` (v1 and v2 transport), `rpc_netinfo.py`, `rpc_quorum.py`, `rpc_verifychainlock.py`, `wallet_hd.py` (legacy and descriptors), `wallet_migration.py`.
  - `feature_bind_extra.py` (from #7786) only runs on Linux and was skipped locally, so CI covers it.
  Every touched file was diffed against develop. The remaining differences come only from develop PRs that are not part of this backport.
  ## Breaking Changes
  Carried over from the picked PRs:
  - #7807: consensus change behind the new `evo_shares` deployment (bit 14). Mainnet and testnet are unaffected until it activates. Devnets with `v24` already active and an EvoNode carrying several owner payouts need to check or reset. New RPC `protx shared_register_prepare_evo`.
  - #7785: outside regtest, a node with `-txindex=0` and without `-disablegovernance` refuses to start again, as before v23.1.0.
  - #7786: carries a partial bitcoin#36170. A node started with `-bind` but no specific `-bind=<addr:port>=onion` now refuses to start while `-listenonion` is enabled. That is the default when listening, even without Tor configured. A wildcard onion bind is also refused. Such nodes need `-bind=127.0.0.1:<port>=onion` or `-listenonion=0`. Nodes without `-bind`, including those using only `-whitebind`, keep the default `127.0.0.1:9996` (`19996` testnet) onion target. See `doc/release-notes-7300.md`.
  - #7779: `protx listdiff` now includes `platform_p2p` and `platform_https` for a legacy-address evonode whose core P2P address changes.
