Summary

Fixes #7516. In src/adapters/qoder/adapter.ts, the Qoder CN adapter previously rejected every raw image with HTTP 400 unsupported_input_modality before CLI invocation.

Remove the adapter-local blanket CN region rejection, aligning Qoder CN with Qoder Global to forward supported image inputs through the shared coding-agent projection (buildConversationInput):

  • Single and multiple raw base64 (data:image/...) inputs are forwarded as Anthropic-format image blocks to the CLI on stdin.
  • Images inside tool-result messages are retained as image blocks and given contextual provenance notes ([image attached below]).
  • Multi-turn conversation images preserve chronological ordering (history before current turn).
  • Unsupported reference schemes (e.g. ftp:// or non-data:/http(s): URIs) are replaced with [image omitted: unsupported reference] in both single-turn (buildInputLines) and multi-turn history (formatMessageForHistory) projections instead of being silently dropped or producing an empty content array.
  • Qoder CN preserves its existing sidecar classification in src/providers/registry/entries-extended.ts, ensuring text-only models continue to route through the vision sidecar as intended.

Verified CLI Contract & Evidence Boundaries (#7516)

  1. Reported live CLI capability ([Bug]: qoder-cn refuses every image with 400 unsupported_input_modality, though qoderclicn accepts images and the model reads them #7516): Verified on qoderclicn 1.1.70 (Windows 11 x64) with DeepSeek-Flash and Qwen3.8-Flash for single data:image/png;base64,... inputs across both the --attachment flag surface and the inline --input-format stream-json --output-format stream-json stdin surface.
  2. OpenCodex adapter & shared projection surface: OpenCodex drives the stdin stream-json surface exclusively (buildConversationInput / buildInputLines). Injected-CLI unit tests in tests/providers/qoder-adapter.test.ts verify single base64 images, multiple images, tool-result images, history ordering, and [image omitted: unsupported reference] markers for unsupported schemes in both single-turn and multi-turn requests.
  3. Unverified live boundaries: Live upstream handling of http(s) image URLs, multi-image correlation across replayed stateless turns, and unverified catalog models are not claimed as live-verified; noVisionModels sidecar defaults remain intact, and the documentation notes the stateless multi-turn replay boundary.

Update provider guidance documentation and structure contracts to reflect Qoder CN image forwarding parity while preserving the strict 600-line limit in structure/providers/chat-compat.md.

Verification

Maintainer integration verification (head 2d409ceca3d74c38ae36d2981c292c8116583a3e)

This head is the reviewed head 7481b67a plus two merges of dev (the latest is d9f594b01 + #7453, which contains the 2.94.0 version line). The only conflict was an additive registration in tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json; both sides' entries are kept. No PR source changed. Checks on Windows 11, Bun 1.4.4:

Command Result
bun run typecheck PASS
bun run structure:check PASS
bun run privacy:scan PASS
bun test on the 15 files that cover the Qoder adapter, Qoder image validation, the shared coding-agent protocol, Claude CLI and CodeBuddy history projection, and the layout guards (tests/adapters/qoder-spawn-readmission, coding-agent-tool-result-images, coding-agent-history-projection, coding-agent-windows-dispatch, tests/providers/claude-cli-efficiency, claude-cli-adapter, coding-agent-json-lines-scaling, codebuddy-protocol, qoder-live-models, qoder-image-input, qoder-cn-image-validation, qoder-adapter, qoder-scaffold-guard, tests/test-layout, tests/test-layout-tooling) 427 passed, 0 failed

Full-suite scope exception: the full bun run test was not run locally. The shared host was under a coordinator-imposed resource limit (one focused test process per lane). This PR changes tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json, so PR CI selects the four full Ubuntu shards, which cover the rest of the suite.

  • Qoder & structure unit tests: bun run test tests/providers/qoder-adapter.test.ts tests/providers/qoder-scaffold-guard.test.ts tests/providers/vision-classification-seed-repair.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/structure-ssot.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts — 292 passed / 0 failed / 1,085 assertions, covering single/multiple base64 images, tool-result images, chronological history ordering, single-turn and history unsupported-scheme omission markers, scaffold guard compatibility (fix(qoder): provider-only catalog, replay-envelope refusal and isolated status #7545), and sidecar seed preservation.
  • Typecheck, Structure SSOT & Privacy scan: bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, and git diff --check — passed.

Walkthrough

The Qoder CN adapter now sends image requests into the coding-agent flow instead of rejecting them before CLI invocation. The shared protocol marks unsupported image references as omitted. Tests and provider documentation cover image forwarding and multi-turn replay behavior.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(qoder): forward Qoder CN images through shared coding-agent projection" names the primary change. The adapter no longer rejects Qoder CN image inputs with unsupported_input_modality. Supported images now pass through the shared coding-agent projection in src/adapters/coding-agent/protocol.ts. The title matches the raw summary and the linked issue #7516. It does not mention the unsupported-image omission markers or the docs and test updates, which is expected for a short title. The PR objectives also flag an open reviewer request for a single-message ftp: image case. That is a review-status concern, not a title mismatch.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #7516 requires Qoder CN to stop rejecting image-bearing requests before CLI invocation, or to use a narrower route-specific refusal for unsupported inputs. The whole-PR diff removes the CN image guard from createQoderAdapter.runTurn in src/adapters/qoder/adapter.ts. The shared projection now forwards supported images and emits [image omitted: unsupported reference] for unsupported references in src/adapters/coding-agent/protocol.ts. tests/providers/qoder-adapter.test.ts covers CN base64 images, multiple images, history ordering, tool-result images, unsupported references, and text-only behavior. Qoder CN sidecar classification remains unchanged. These changes address the reported terminal unsupported_input_modality failure and the single-message ftp: omission-marker requirement. The issue's unverified HTTP(S) and catalog-model cases are evidence limits, not stated coding requirements.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed files remain connected to the linked objective. src/adapters/qoder/adapter.ts removes the reported CN-only rejection. src/adapters/coding-agent/protocol.ts preserves supported images and adds contextual omission markers needed for unsupported references in the shared Qoder path. tests/providers/qoder-adapter.test.ts adds regression coverage for those behaviors. The edits in docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/providers.md and structure/providers/chat-compat.md update the corresponding provider contract and retain the multi-turn limitation. No unrelated provider behavior or sidecar classification change appears in the whole-PR diff.

Remove the Qoder CN adapter-local blanket raw-image rejection in runTurn,
aligning Qoder CN with Qoder Global to use the shared coding-agent image
projection. Supported image inputs (data: base64) are forwarded to the
Qoder CN CLI, tool-result images are preserved as real image blocks with
provenance notes, and unsupported schemes are safely omitted without
crashing. Qoder CN preserves its existing sidecar classification so
text-only models continue to route through the vision sidecar.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Distinguish unsupported history images from supported images.

A multi-message Qoder CN request can reach formatMessageForHistory. For a prior user message with an unsupported image reference, the function emits [image], while the history-image loop emits no image block. The model therefore receives an image marker without an image it can inspect. The current-message path already uses [image omitted: unsupported reference].

Handle unsupported image references explicitly in formatMessageForHistory. This is independent from the single-message buildInputLines omission because the paths are separate.

Triage note (2026-10-24, against dev at 2494848).

Needs fixes before this can land: add the single-user-message ftp: image case and preserve its omission marker. That branch calls buildInputLines (src/adapters/coding-agent/protocol.ts:842), which silently drops unsupported images at :789; the multi-message branch emits a marker at :880. Obtain executable CI afterward.

Still needed on dev: yes. CN image requests still return 400 unsupported_input_modality before CLI execution (src/adapters/qoder/adapter.ts:157).

Exact-head CI at triage time: f069302 — policy checks and CodeRabbit pass; ci.yml ACTION_REQUIRED, run 39944884469. lane=all on exact head: n.a.

Please refresh onto current dev when addressing these; heads older than dev need a fresh exact-head CI run before review.

Release triage for v2.93.0 (maintainer decision): deferred until after the 2.93.0 release. This PR stays open, and so does #7516.

Why: the fix lifts the Qoder CN image refusal, and it also changes history formatting in the shared coding-agent protocol (src/adapters/coding-agent/protocol.ts), which every coding-agent adapter uses. The open maintainer question on #7516 asks for the exact supported CLI version and input surfaces before the CN route is treated as multimodal; the PR does not answer that yet. It is still a draft with two unresolved CodeRabbit threads, 57 commits behind dev, and has no aggregate CI on its head. #7665 also reworks the Qoder CN client in parallel.

To pick it back up: rebase onto current dev, record the verified qoderclicn version and the image paths it accepts, resolve the bot threads, and get green exact-head CI. Splitting the shared-protocol omission marker into its own change would make review easier.

Acknowledged the v2.93.0 release deferral (#7536#issuecomment-6409205330) — keeping this PR in draft until after 2.93.0 lands.

In the meantime, I have prepared the branch for post-2.93.0 pickup on head cf4e5d2a3a124af25869f0421e7a856caa2d25d1:

  1. Synced with current dev (2971af85630bc19586a13a67877f354810e01c5a) and verified clean coexistence with #7545 (qoder-scaffold-guard.test.ts) and orthogonality with #7665 (which touches src/clients/config-export/qoder.ts and src/integrations/ rather than src/adapters/qoder/adapter.ts).
  2. Resolved both CodeRabbit review threads (PRRT_kwDOS-0Gi86vUOlh and PRRT_kwDOS-0Gi86vUOlx), which are covered in src/adapters/coding-agent/protocol.ts:796-799 and tests/providers/qoder-adapter.test.ts:648,753,777,781-830 (292 tests passing across qoder-adapter.test.ts, qoder-scaffold-guard.test.ts, vision-classification-seed-repair.test.ts, structure-ssot.test.ts, and file-size-ratchet.test.ts).
  3. Documented the verified qoderclicn 1.1.70 contract and evidence boundaries in the PR description (distinguishing the live single-image data:image/png;base64,... evidence on --input-format stream-json stdin and --attachment from [Bug]: qoder-cn refuses every image with 400 unsupported_input_modality, though qoderclicn accepts images and the model reads them #7516, the injected-CLI projection tests, and the unverified live multi-image/URL boundaries while keeping noVisionModels sidecar defaults intact).

Once v2.93.0 is released, I can also split the shared src/adapters/coding-agent/protocol.ts unsupported-image omission marker into a standalone prerequisite PR if you prefer reviewing that surface separately.

Maintainer update for the v2.93.0 cycle: this PR is scheduled to land after v2.93.0 is published on main. It is now a post-release item; the earlier deferral comment is superseded. Until the release ships, it stays unmerged.

I pushed 7481b67a1e06ff4e46123cd3585e904518746498 to this branch. It merges current dev (no rebase) and keeps your commits and credit. On top of that:

  • Narrower CN image path: CN images are limited to the models with verified evidence, as a single base64 PNG. Before the Qoder CLI starts, the image must pass canonical base64 and PNG signature/IHDR checks. Decoded images above 1 MiB, a local resource limit, are refused. A refused image gets the existing 400 / unsupported_input_modality error, which is not retried.
  • Qoder-only marker: the "[image omitted]" marker applies to Qoder only. History formatting for every other coding-agent adapter is byte-identical to dev.
  • Earlier review threads: both CodeRabbit findings are addressed.
  • Docs: they state the verified CLI/version evidence and the PNG-only scope.

Validation on Windows with Bun 1.4.4:

  • The new regression tests had 19 failures before the fixes; the final run is 440 pass, 0 fail.
  • Typecheck, structure check, privacy scan and docs build pass.
  • Independent review round 1 found one blocker, base64/PNG validation, which is fixed. Round 2 passed with no blocking findings.

Remaining before merge: exact-head CI, publication of v2.93.0, and a final recheck against dev. Live Qoder requests were not run.

Maintainer integration into dev (MAINTAINERS.md, "Review and merge policy": a maintainer with admin access may integrate a PR into dev without another maintainer approval). This is maintainer integration, not an approving review.

Exact head: 2d409ceca3d74c38ae36d2981c292c8116583a3e. It is the reviewed head 7481b67a plus merges of dev; the only conflict was an additive layout registration. The dev merges changed no PR source.

Review: the maintainer-lane review passed on 7481b67a after the image-validation fixes. Both review threads are resolved.

Exact-head CI: Cross-platform CI run 40528327595 passed gates, test 1/4 through test 4/4, docker smoke, npm-global ubuntu-latest, docs site build, structure gate, storage policy and api usage. Catalog async contracts run 40528327378 passed. macOS and Windows jobs are skipped on pull requests by policy.

Combined with current dev: dev 102ccee61 is five commits ahead, with no conflict. On the local merge of this head with that dev, the layout guards, the Qoder CN image validation suite and the coding-agent history projection suite passed (58 passed, 0 failed), and structure:check passed.

Gate status: the target/description gate enforce-target has not started for this head because the shared Actions queue holds more than 180 runs. It passed on the previous head 7481b67a, and the base and description have not changed since, apart from the added verification section. The dev ruleset has no required status checks.

Local verification and scope exception: see the "Maintainer integration verification" section in the description.
