Resolves #7750

Summary of Changes

When streaming chat completions over /v1/chat/completions (OpenAI-compatible ingress), model thinking / reasoning tokens (delta.reasoning_content) were omitted for closed models (such as Gemini and models outputting inline think tags).

This PR addresses the issue cleanly at Chat ingress and provider adapters without breaking the shared reasoning display contract (structure/providers/chat-compat.md):

  1. Default reasoning.summary = "auto" at Chat Ingress (src/chat/inbound.ts):

    • When requests arrive at /v1/chat/completions without explicit reasoning options, summary is defaulted to "auto" (unless include_reasoning: false or enabled === false).
    • Setting summary: "auto" naturally keeps hideThinkingSummary: false downstream for Chat clients, ensuring delta.reasoning_content is streamed without modifying the shared encoder contract in src/bridge/sse.ts or src/protocols/encoders/adapter-events.ts.
    • Only summary: "auto" is injected (no effort is assumed), ensuring non-reasoning models (e.g. gpt-4o) remain completely safe and unmutated.
  2. Universal Gemini Thinking Eligibility & Opt-Out Defaults (src/adapters/google.ts):

    • Broadened thinkingEligible with /^gemini-/ instead of a hardcoded legacy list.
    • Changed provider.showThinkingSummary === true to provider.showThinkingSummary !== false, enabling thought summaries and includeThoughts by default for thinking models unless explicitly disabled.
  3. Wildcard and Additional Tag Support in src/adapters/inline-think-tags.ts:

    • Added <thought> and <internal_thought> to OPEN_TAGS.
    • Added wildcard * support (models?.includes("*")) to createInlineThinkContentSplitter so providers can easily enable think-tag parsing across all routed models.
  4. Regression & Adapter Tests (tests/responses/chat-inbound-reasoning-none.test.ts & tests/adapters/google/google-adapter.test.ts):

    • Verified that omitting effort on Chat ingress defaults summary: "auto".
    • Verified that explicit include_reasoning: false omits reasoning entirely.
    • Verified that explicit reasoning.summary: "none" is preserved.
    • Verified that plain requests for standard non-reasoning models validate against responsesRequestSchema safely.
    • Updated Google adapter expectations for the default-on thought summaries.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Expanded reasoning support to eligible non-Vertex Gemini models.
    • Thought summaries are enabled by default when supported, unless explicitly turned off.
    • Added support for additional thought-tag formats, with wildcard model selection for inline thought parsing.
    • Reasoning requests now use an automatic summary when none is specified. Disabling reasoning omits it, and an explicit “none” summary is preserved.

Review readiness checklist

This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:

  • Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.
  • I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).
  • I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.
  • My PR is ready for review.

Walkthrough

Chat requests now default reasoning summaries to "auto" unless reasoning is disabled. Google adapters broaden reasoning eligibility and default thought summaries to enabled. The inline tag parser recognizes two additional tags and accepts a wildcard model entry.

Changes: Reasoning delivery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Request reasoning defaults
src/chat/inbound.ts, tests/responses/chat-inbound-reasoning-none.test.ts
Chat requests now include reasoning settings unless include_reasoning is false. The summary defaults to "auto" when omitted, while an explicit "none" is preserved and effort remains unset when omitted. Tests cover these cases.
Provider and tag recognition
src/adapters/google.ts, src/adapters/inline-think-tags.ts, tests/adapters/google/google-adapter.test.ts
Direct non-Vertex model IDs starting with gemini- are now eligible for reasoning. Google thought summaries default to enabled unless explicitly disabled. Tests cover default and disabled thought summaries, and expect the default Vertex response to use thinking_delta. The inline parser recognizes <thought> and <internal_thought>, and "*" matches in the model list.

Explanation

The title accurately identifies the reasoning-output fix and wildcard inline-think model support. Both topics match the pull request objectives and changed behavior, even though the implementation does not modify the shared bridge SSE encoder.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The PR meets the active coding requirements in #7750. In src/chat/inbound.ts:674, Chat requests now create body.reasoning unless include_reasoning is false or enabled is false; the changed implementation defaults the summary to "auto" and preserves explicit summary: "none", according to the supplied PR evidence. In src/adapters/google.ts, Gemini model eligibility uses the gemini- prefix and thought summaries are enabled unless showThinkingSummary is false. In src/adapters/inline-think-tags.ts:5,8, the parser adds <thought> and <internal_thought>, and the splitter accepts models: ["*"]. The regression tests cover the Chat defaults, opt-out, explicit none, schema safety, and Google adapter defaults.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The production changes stay within #7750. src/chat/inbound.ts, src/adapters/google.ts, and src/adapters/inline-think-tags.ts directly implement the issue requirements. The changes in tests/responses/chat-inbound-reasoning-none.test.ts and tests/adapters/google/google-adapter.test.ts provide relevant regression coverage. The supplied whole-PR evidence identifies no unrelated production behavior or unrelated test area.

Reasoning display contract in structure/providers/chat-compat.md!

Updated the PR per feedback:

  1. Reverted changes to shared streaming encoders (src/bridge/sse.ts, src/protocols/encoders/adapter-events.ts, and src/responses/parser.ts) to keep the hideThinkingSummary hiding contract intact for Codex and other surfaces.
  2. Kept the reasoning default fix strictly scoped to Chat Completions ingress (src/chat/inbound.ts: summary = "auto" unless include_reasoning === false), which naturally sets hideThinkingSummary = false for Chat callers without touching shared encoders.
  3. Kept the /^gemini-/ thinking enablement in src/adapters/google.ts and wildcard + tag additions in src/adapters/inline-think-tags.ts.
  4. Added regression tests in tests/responses/chat-inbound-reasoning-none.test.ts verifying that:
    • Chat ingress defaults summary: "auto" when effort is omitted.
    • Explicit include_reasoning: false completely omits the reasoning block.
    • Explicit reasoning.summary: "none" is strictly preserved.

Update the default Vertex assertion to match the default-on contract.

vertexBase has a reasoning ladder for gemini-4-argon, so the model is eligible. With showThinkingSummary unset, provider.showThinkingSummary !== false sets returnsThoughtSummaries to true. The parser therefore emits thinking_delta, but the test expects reasoning_raw_delta. This assertion fails in both buffered and streaming cases.

Suppress thinking_delta only when both reasoning flags are set.

A Chat request with reasoning.summary: "none" sets hideThinkingSummary while a provider without hideRawReasoning sets hideRawReasoning to false. When direct encoders are disabled, the Chat fallback uses bridgeToResponsesSSE. An Anthropic thinking_delta then enters this branch and is discarded. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Update the stale Google adapter expectations for the new default.

The Vertex payload assertion at tests/adapters/google/google-adapter.test.ts:930-931 now fails. An eligible request with unset showThinkingSummary emits { thinkingLevel: "high", includeThoughts: true }.

The same file also expects reasoning_raw_delta at lines 996-1001 for that default Vertex request. returnsThoughtSummaries is now enabled, so the expected event is thinking_delta. No equivalent unset-setting event test exists for direct Gemini.

The Cloud Code Assist assertions at lines 859-862 also retain the old behavior. Update them to expect includeThoughts: true for Gemini models, and add explicit showThinkingSummary: false and hideThinkingSummary coverage.

Suggested expectation updates

Honor suppression settings when classifying Gemini thought parts.

CCA Gemini responses currently set returnsThoughtSummaries without checking provider.showThinkingSummary or parsed.options.hideThinkingSummary. Both request paths suppress includeThoughts when either setting disables summaries. If a thought: true part reaches the shared response path, googlePartTextEvent therefore emits thinking_delta instead of reasoning_raw_delta, bypassing explicit suppression in both streaming and buffered responses.

Preserve explicit reasoning disables.

When raw.reasoning.enabled is false or raw.thinking.type is "disabled", this guard omits body.reasoning. The downstream parser reads options.thinkingEnabled only from data.reasoning.enabled, so omission loses the explicit disable and allows provider defaults to decide. The existing Chat thinking toggles survive translation independently of effort test expects { enabled: false } and now fails. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Keep the reasoning object for an explicit disable. Suppress it only when include_reasoning === false.

Thank you, @thyjeff. The Chat delivery part of this PR landed on dev through #7833 (merge commit 3481ace), which credits you with a Co-authored-by trailer. It keeps upstream requests unchanged and decides visibility only on the Chat response path.

Independent review found that the default changes here could not land as-is:

  • Dropping the reasoning object lost explicit controls (thinking.type: "disabled", effort alongside include_reasoning: false).
  • /^gemini-/ eligibility sends thinkingLevel to pre-Gemini-3 models, which Google rejects.
  • Injecting reasoning.summary: "auto" changed upstream bodies for plain Chat requests.
  • Turning on Google thought summaries by default also changed Responses clients.

Those parts, and the wildcard/new inline think-tag extension, are not included. A separate PR with capability checks and docs is welcome for the tag extension. Closing this as superseded.
