fix(chat): deliver upstream raw reasoning to Chat clients without a generation opt-in - #7833
A /v1/chat/completions client that sends no reasoning options never received delta.reasoning_content (or message.reasoning_content), even when the upstream model streamed raw reasoning. Chat delivery reused parsed.options.hideThinkingSummary, which the parser sets whenever no summary is requested and reasoning is not active, so raw reasoning was swallowed on the way out.
Chat ingress now computes a separate delivery-only decision, chatRawReasoningVisible, and passes it to the Chat client's delivery paths: direct encoders, the Responses SSE bridge, buffered JSON, runTurn, and the web-search and image/video sidecar bridges. Upstream raw reasoning is shown unless the caller hides it explicitly (include_reasoning: false, reasoning.summary: "none", reasoning_effort: "none", reasoning.enabled: false, or thinking.type: "disabled"), and provider hideRawReasoning still wins.
Nothing changes upstream: request bytes and parsed generation options for Chat callers are identical to dev, so Anthropic thinking display, Google includeThoughts and thinkingConfig, and OpenAI reasoning fields are untouched. The summary channel, Responses ingress and Anthropic Messages ingress keep their existing behavior.
This carries the delivery part of #7752 by @thyjeff. That PR's default changes (injecting reasoning.summary: "auto" upstream, /^gemini-/ thinking eligibility, default-on Google thought summaries, and the inline think-tag extension) are not included.
Closes#7750 (closed manually after merge, since this targets dev).
tests/responses/chat-raw-reasoning-delivery.test.ts (new, 97 cases): streaming and buffered Chat clients, both direct-encoder settings, web-search and video sidecars, explicit hiding and toggle/effort precedence, provider hideRawReasoning, unchanged upstream bytes, Responses/Messages isolation, and summary isolation. With src reverted to dev, the first 49 cases ran 28 pass / 21 fail, and the sidecar cases failed 8 of 40 before their fix; with the change, 97 pass / 0 fail.
27 related files (Chat ingress/endpoint/native, protocol encoders, reasoning envelope/summary/hide-raw, parser, layout/ratchet): 837 pass / 0 fail. Web-search, image loop and replay files: 249 pass in the second review.
bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, git diff --check: pass.
Two independent review rounds: round 1 found one blocker (sidecar bridges dropped the flag), fixed; round 2 PASS with 0 blocking findings on this head.
Not run locally: full bun run test and test:changed (shared host under load); left to CI.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Chat Completions can now return raw upstream reasoning when reasoning controls are omitted, without changing the upstream request. Explicit disable settings and provider-level hiding still suppress it, while explicit enabled settings take precedence over effort settings.
The behavior is consistent across streaming and buffered responses, including image and web-search sidecar responses.
Documentation
Updated the reference and technical guides to describe raw reasoning visibility and clarify that Responses and Anthropic Messages behavior is unchanged.
Separate Chat raw-reasoning delivery visibility from parsed thinking options
on direct encoder and internal Responses bridge paths. Preserve upstream
request bytes, explicit controls, summary behavior, and provider display policy.
Add focused streaming and buffered regressions and document the delivery default.
Carries the delivery fix from #7752 for #7750.

Chat ingress now derives a separate raw-reasoning visibility preference and passes it through buffered, streaming, direct-encoder, and sidecar response paths. Explicit controls and provider-level hiding determine delivery without changing upstream request options.
Chat ingress derives visibility from summary, thinking-enabled, and effort settings, then passes the preference into response handling. Tests cover control precedence and Chat delivery cases.
Apply the preference to response encoders src/bridge/response-json.ts, src/bridge/sse.ts, src/protocols/encoders/adapter-events.ts, src/server/inference/client-encoder-delivery.ts, src/server/responses/adapter-delivery.ts, src/server/responses/run-turn-execution.ts, tests/responses/chat-raw-reasoning-delivery.test.ts
Buffered, streaming, and direct-encoder paths use the Chat preference to determine raw-reasoning delivery. Provider-level hideRawReasoning remains an overriding condition.
Forward the preference through sidecars src/images/loop.ts, src/web-search/loop.ts, src/server/responses/sidecar-execution.ts, tests/responses/chat-raw-reasoning-delivery.test.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout-chat.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json, structure/data-planes/protocol-paths.md, structure/transports/responses.md
Image and web-search bridges receive the preference. Tests cover sidecar delivery and Responses and Messages ingress; documentation describes the delivery paths.

Explanation
The changed delivery flag, its propagation through direct and Responses paths, sidecar forwarding, documentation, layout updates, and tests/responses/chat-raw-reasoning-delivery.test.ts all support the stated Chat raw-reasoning delivery objective. The tests that verify unchanged Responses and Messages behavior are supporting regression tests. No unrelated change is established by the supplied change summary or the inspected head files.

Explanation
The PR implements the raw-delivery portion of open issue #7750. Evidence includes chatRawReasoningVisible in src/chat/inbound.ts, propagation through src/server/chat-completions.ts, src/server/responses/*, src/bridge/sse.ts, src/bridge/response-json.ts, src/protocols/encoders/adapter-events.ts, and the web-search and image sidecar loops. tests/responses/chat-raw-reasoning-delivery.test.ts covers default delivery, explicit hiding, provider hideRawReasoning, unchanged upstream bytes, and Responses/Messages isolation. The linked issue also specifies coding changes that this PR explicitly excludes: the Google thinkingEligible and includeThoughts defaults in src/adapters/google.ts, the additional inline tags and wildcard support in src/adapters/inline-think-tags.ts, and the Chat reasoning.summary: "auto" default in src/chat/inbound.ts. The issue also proposes changing thinking_delta suppression in src/bridge/sse.ts and src/protocols/encoders/adapter-events.ts; this PR preserves summary-channel handling. The linked issue is directly linked and open, so its remaining coding requirements apply.
Resolution
Implement the remaining #7750 requirements and add automated coverage for Gemini thought generation, the expanded inline-tag parser, Chat summary defaulting, and thinking_delta delivery. If this PR must remain delivery-only, remove the open direct link to #7750 and track the remaining requirements in a separate active issue.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Extract the raw-reasoning visibility rule into one shared helper.
This condition now exists in three places:
src/bridge/response-json.ts Line 302
src/bridge/sse.ts Line 1041
src/protocols/encoders/adapter-events.ts Line 645
It is !(chatRawReasoningVisible ?? !hideThinkingSummary) || hideRawReasoning. The three copies already differ in form: this one uses === true, and the others use truthiness. A future edit to one copy would make buffered JSON, bridged SSE, and direct encoders disagree on what the client sees.
The same rule also combines three overlapping booleans. Put it in a single pure function, for example in src/bridge/internal.ts, and call it from all three sites.
- if (!(options?.chatRawReasoningVisible ?? !options?.hideThinkingSummary) || options?.hideRawReasoning === true) {+ if (rawReasoningHidden(options)) {
Based on learnings: avoid multiple independent boolean flags for one state. Prefer a single named decision.

The exported Droid header supplies a generation default that is written into
the Chat body after routing. Computing the delivery choice afterwards read a
configured "none" default as a caller request to hide raw reasoning.
