Summary

The absent-home concurrency test launched six first registrations together but treated the ownership lock's documented, retryable 50 ms busy refusal as a child-process failure. This caused PR #8149's Ubuntu test 3/5 job to fail with SQLITE_BUSY / CONFIG_OWNERSHIP_LOCK_UNAVAILABLE in an unchanged ownership test.

Reuse the test file's existing bounded registration retry helper for the cold-start children. A new optional helper flag suppresses creating the child path before the barrier, so the home remains absent until all six children begin registering. The test still requires every child to exit successfully and every path to survive in the manifest. Product locking, the 50 ms wait budget, assertions and test timeouts are unchanged.

This is a standalone test fix based on dev 250ef01aee146e7d2caeb9bc904f6667b6c8ff66; it carries no #8149 runtime changes.

Verification

  • Pinned Bun 1.4.4 on Windows: bun scripts/test.ts --parallel=1 tests/config/config-ownership-concurrent-record.test.ts — 41 passed, 5 failed, 200 assertions. The changed cold-start case passed; the full file is not reported as green.
  • Ran the five failures against an otherwise unmodified copy of the same file from dev 250ef01 — the same five failed (13 assertions, 41 filtered out). They cover two POSIX chmod/uninstall cases, two open-lock unlink cases, and a dangling-symlink case. Their existing Windows skip options did not suppress execution in this run. Independent source review also confirmed the changed cold-start helper path is not used by these failures; the one existing ungated helper call generates the same child code.
  • bun check --no-script --noEmit — passed (2,322 files).
  • bun scripts/privacy-scan.ts, bun scripts/file-size-ratchet.ts, and git diff --check — passed.
  • Independent read-only review confirmed preserved default gated/ungated behavior, absent-home barrier semantics, existing bounded busy retry, exit-code handling, and all six manifest assertions.

The full repository suite was not repeated on the shared Windows workstation; the focused file and explicit unchanged-source controls provide the stated local coverage. Ubuntu CI remains the acceptance evidence for the reported failure. No failed CI was rerun, and no per-PR cross-platform workflow was dispatched.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed. This only corrects test orchestration; product behavior is unchanged.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. No product/security-policy change; the fast-failure contract is preserved.
  • Current-head hosted CI and review are complete.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Updated the concurrent registration test to use a shared worker script with bounded lock retries and improved error handling.
    • Added coverage confirming that a worker that times out before readiness exits without creating the home directory.

Walkthrough

The shared test worker can signal readiness without creating the target file. The concurrent first-registration test uses this option, and a new test checks that a worker exits after its gate deadline without creating the home.

Changes: Absent-home concurrent registration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Worker setup and registration test
tests/config/config-ownership-concurrent-record.test.ts
The shared child script accepts a createPath flag and exits with code 1 if the gate does not open before the bounded wait expires. A new test verifies that the expired worker signals readiness and leaves the home absent. The synchronized first-registration test uses the helper with file creation disabled, applying its bounded lock-retry and error-handling behavior.

@coderabbitai review

Please review head 9a1a0c7 once. This reuses the existing bounded busy-lock retry for absent-home registration children while preserving the synchronization barrier, product fast-failure policy and all assertions. The five local Windows failures were reproduced against unchanged dev and are disclosed in Verification.

Exit before ownership registration when the go signal is still absent after the barrier deadline. A child-local deterministic clock regression fails before the fix and passes afterward without a 20-second delay. Focused gated/cold/racing controls: 4 pass, 20 assertions; typecheck2322 and file-size/diff checks pass. No product change.

@luvs01 I’ll request one review of the current head, 3b5dff4849d4fafaf862832b08ef71f73f677e4c. I’ll leave the automatic-review pause configuration unchanged.

Maintainer integration (dev only, per MAINTAINERS.md): exact head 3b5dff4 has a successful required check rollup and no unresolved review threads. Test-only change to tests/config/config-ownership-concurrent-record.test.ts. It applies the existing bounded busy-lock retry to the absent-home cold-start children; the same case failed on macOS 1/4 in dev run 42247227346 with one child exiting 2. Thank you!
