Problem

The preview's copy helper was a Playwright exposeBinding visible to every page, and Playwright treats a binding reply as a user gesture. It also accepted text for five seconds after any viewer message, including mouse moves, wheel, and resize. Copy should only follow the viewer's copy and cut keys.

Change

  • Each headless tab records copy and cut events in a CDP isolated world (Page.addScriptToEvaluateOnNewDocument with worldName). Page scripts can't see or call anything in it, and it records only trusted copy and cut events fired while a real key is being handled.
  • When the controlling viewer presses Ctrl/Cmd+C or X, the server dispatches the key, then reads and clears that text from each frame's world with Runtime.evaluate. Nothing is sent back to the page, and no other input reads it.
  • A frame that runs in its own process (an iframe whose document or parent sends Origin-Agent-Cluster: ?1 across origins) is out of reach of the page's session, so it gets its own session with the same world, cleared and read with the page's frames and dropped when its target closes.
  • Page navigator.clipboard writes are no longer forwarded, and the shared headless clipboard is never read. Copy buttons that only call navigator.clipboard.writeText stop reaching the viewer's clipboard; the copy and cut keys still do.

Runtime.addBinding was the other option, but a binding in an isolated world installs only while Runtime.enable is on for the session, which would stream every page's console calls and exceptions to the server a second time. Reading right after the key also removes the time window.

Scope and approval

Maintainer fix, limited to the preview copy path in ServerBrowser.ts and its existing test.

Verification

  • ServerBrowser.test.ts passes (36 tests). The clipboard test now checks that mouse, wheel, other keys, and unknown messages forward nothing, that copy and cut keys deliver to the controlling viewer only, and that an empty copy sends nothing, including when a frame still holds text from before. A second test covers a frame in its own process: its copy is read, its leftover text is cleared, and it is no longer read once its target closes. Server typecheck, lint, and format pass.
  • Real Chromium through Playwright 1.60, on the pinned chrome-headless-shell 154.0.8037.92 with the server's launch flags, using the exact script from the source:
    • After: the main world has no helper, and activation stays false after the server's reads. Synthetic copy events, mouse and wheel input, and a page's execCommand("copy") or clipboard.writeText after a click record nothing. A real Cmd+C, a Cmd+X in a textarea, and a Cmd+C inside an iframe each deliver their text exactly once. A popup adopted after it loaded records copies too. A copy the page makes during another key, or a frame copy left unread, is not sent by a later Cmd+C in another frame. A field inside an open shadow root copies its selection. A page copy handler that stops propagation still delivers the selection, and one that calls preventDefault and setData delivers its own text.
    • Out-of-process frames: the pinned headless shell keeps full site isolation off, so a plain cross-site iframe stays in the page's process in both launch paths, but an Origin-Agent-Cluster: ?1 iframe gets its own process. Before this change, Cmd+C and Cmd+X there delivered nothing. After: Cmd+C, Ctrl+C, and Cmd+X in such a frame each deliver once, its main world has no helper and activation stays false after the server's reads, an unread copy left there is not sent by a later key in the main frame, a page execCommand("copy") there records nothing, copy keeps working after the frame moves to another process or back into the page's, and an adopted popup's out-of-process frame copies too.
  • Not checked: a copy through a live viewer in the app; the viewer-to-server path is covered by the unit test.

Model: claude-opus-5-5 (xhigh) via Claude Code in T3 Code

The copy helper was a page-visible Playwright binding, and Playwright answers
binding calls with a gesture-marked evaluate, so calling it counted as a click.
Any viewer input also let page copies through for five seconds.

Pages now record copy and cut events in an isolated world the page cannot
see, and the server reads that text once, right after it dispatches the
viewer's copy or cut key. Clipboard writes a page makes on its own are no
longer forwarded.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — The production change substantially rewires preview clipboard handling, including isolated-world scripts, per-frame CDP sessions, and out-of-process frame lifecycle management. It changes existing clipboard behavior and processes potentially sensitive copied text, so the implementation warrants human review despite focused tests and limited file scope.

📝 Walkthrough

Headless preview tabs now record text from trusted copy and cut shortcuts in page and separate-process frames. ServerBrowser retrieves and clears captured text after a shortcut, then forwards nonempty text to the controlling viewer. Desktop tabs do not use this capture path.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 5aa3a

The change limits preview clipboard forwarding to the viewer's own copy and cut shortcuts. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains. The live viewer-to-server path and out-of-process iframes were not tested end to end, which is normal validation uncertainty.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3661e

The change substantially restricts clipboard forwarding to the controlling viewer’s copy and cut shortcuts. A conditional recovery risk remains: a frame whose capture cannot be cleared could later return older text rather than text produced by the current shortcut. Broader clipboard exposure or privilege expansion was not established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: The new capture pipeline does not preserve current-gesture provenance across every frame-read failure. If pre-dispatch clearing fails for a frame that retains older text, that frame receives no new matching key, and the post-dispatch read succeeds, its older text can be forwarded as the current shortcut’s result. This could carry clipboard state across gestures or controller changes within the same tab. Runtime reachability of this recovery sequence remains unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The inspected forwarding path reads the current tab’s frame worlds and sends one bounded text result to the initiating viewer, rather than broadcasting clipboard output. It does not read the shared headless clipboard. No cross-tab or cross-tenant read is present in this path.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The remaining conditional failure path concerns older text from the same tab being attributed to a later gesture. It requires retained capture state and a failed clear followed by a successful read without a resetting key in that frame. Attacker control over those failures, cross-tenant exposure, and a reproducible exploit were not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Viewer input requires operating permission and controller ownership. SessionControl checks ownership before queuing and again before execution, serializing actions across control changes. The isolated capture additionally requires trusted matching key and copy/cut events; synthetic page events alone cannot satisfy those checks.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Per-frame failures are converted to empty results so an unavailable frame does not fail the entire read. This contains immediate output failures but does not distinguish a destroyed frame from a surviving frame whose capture was not consumed. Healthy-frame destructive reads and keydown resets provide the strongest counterevidence to stale forwarding.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make recovery fail closed for clipboard freshness: exclude frames whose pre-dispatch consumption was not confirmed, or associate captures with a gesture generation and require a matching generation before forwarding. Validate transient frame recovery and controller changes with retained captures.

The copy recorder armed on every key, so text a page copied during another
key, or text a frame kept without being read, could go out with a later copy
key from a different frame. It now arms only on Ctrl or Cmd + C or X, and the
server clears every frame's text right before it sends a copy or cut key, as
well as after.

The selection is now read while the event is captured at window, so a page
copy handler that stops propagation still copies the selection. Text a page
sets with preventDefault and setData still replaces it. The focused field is
found through open shadow roots.

Read page-provided clipboard text when propagation stops.

A page can call preventDefault(), set text/plain, and stop propagation in its copy or cut handler. The window bubble listener then does not run. The viewer receives the selection snapshot instead of the page-provided clipboard text.

Keep the captured event state and resolve defaultPrevented and clipboardData after dispatch. This preserves custom copy and cut behavior.

A frame that runs in its own process, such as one sent with an
Origin-Agent-Cluster header, is out of reach of the page's CDP session,
so its copy and cut keys sent the viewer nothing. Each such frame now
gets its own session that installs the same copy recorder, is cleared
and read with the page's frames, and is dropped when its target closes.

Nightly sync 2026-10-15: 26 upstream commits (7371925..ec1313c).

Conflicted files and resolutions:
- apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProjectionStore.ts: kept both sides.
  Conn's getOpenRemoteDelegatedTasks (linked-environment delegation) and
upstream's new getThreadWorktreePaths sit side by side in the shape, the
live layer and the memory layer.
- apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.ts: both sides removed a ViewerState
  field. Conn (7fc4897) dropped scrolledAt and the scroll-motion scaling;
upstream (pingdotgg#19561) dropped inputAt for copy-key recording. Resolution keeps
  neither field and Conn's `resume: startScreencast`; upstream's copy-key
clipboard world, frame sessions and takeCopiedText came in unchanged.
- apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.test.ts: upstream's makeFrame and
makeSession(frame?) with Conn's variadic on/emit event mock (a superset of
upstream's), so both the scroll-burst test and upstream's copy tests run.
- apps/web/src/components/chat/ChatComposer.tsx: kept Conn's
  renderComposerControls(inStrip, departing) structure and re-applied
upstream's only change (pingdotgg#19562, package-icon opacity classes on the
collapsed model picker icon) on the `inStrip` branch.

Uncertain: none. Regression scan of upstream's apps/web diff: no hits.

Brings in upstream through pingdotgg#19257 (339179f).

- Partly superseded: upstream's Tailscale SSH remote open (pingdotgg#19402) replaces Cody's detection. Cody now uses upstream's `tailscale debug prefs` read, which also treats `tailscale down` as off, and drops its `tailscale get` reader, Windows skip, and Tailscale 1.102 requirement. Cody keeps only the tailscale-ssh target with the server's account, so editors sign in as that user.
- Adapted: Cody's install-when-idle updates now skip a version upstream reports as not applied (pingdotgg#19291), instead of reinstalling and restarting after every idle period.
- Server browser: kept Windows work-account sign-in beside upstream's copy recording (pingdotgg#19561).
- Mobile branch list: kept Cody's worktreeBaseRef import beside upstream's linked PR suggestions (pingdotgg#19357).

* fix(clients): a thread comes back when its subagent needs approval (pingdotgg#19630)
