fix(web): update everything no longer waits on slow servers, and shows progress in the sidebar - #19837
Conversation
…ger waits on slow servers This app now relaunches once every server has started restarting into its update, after a 5 second countdown the user can postpone. The update button grows into a capsule that shows progress, a slow machine, or a failure with Retry. Servers still restarting when this app relaunches are followed after it. Start the recovery deadline at server handoff.
serversStartedAt is captured before updateServer runs. If downloading or installing is slow, followHandedOffServers can report failure before the server has spent 32 minutes restarting. Record the timestamp when the update enters resuming.

Declining as an edge case. Counting from the start of the server update can only cut the follow-up short when a slow download plus a launcher trial that nearly hits its 30 minute limit together pass 32 minutes. If that happens, the row reports a timeout while the server keeps updating on its own. Nothing is lost: if the server is still behind when it reconnects, the normal update button offers it again. A separate handoff timestamp would add persisted state for that rare case.

@t3dotgg Understood. Thanks for the guidance. The early timeout affects follow-up reporting, not the server update itself. I won’t push for a separate handoff timestamp.

Learning: In apps/web/src/components/sidebar/updateEverythingRun.tsx, the 32-minute followHandedOffServers deadline intentionally uses the server update's start time rather than a separate handoff timestamp. The maintainer accepts the rare early reporting timeout caused by a slow download combined with a long launcher trial. The server continues updating independently, and the normal update button offers another update if the server reconnects while still behind.

"Update everything" got stuck when one box was slow to restart. This app waited for every remote server to come back, up to 32 minutes each, before it relaunched itself. While it waited, the button was disabled. The only progress was a hover tooltip, and there was no way to cancel or retry.
Now:
3 of 6 updated. A machine slower than 3 minutes shows asalvin 6m, and a failure shows Retry. Click it to see each machine. Time labels change at most once every 30 seconds, and once a second during the countdown. Nothing repaints continuously.Verified in a dev build by driving the run state: progress, slow, countdown, failed, and popover all render. Later resolves the restart wait as postponed. Logic tests cover the capsule text, run closing, status after a relaunch, and the relaunch toast.
