Fail One File Instead of the Whole Run on a Per-File Exception - #1108
An exception in any processing step escaped Process.ProcessFile() and the per-file loop in ProcessDriver.ProcessFiles(). The PLINQ ForAll then ended the run for every remaining file, and the command exited with 1.
Process.ProcessFile() catches a step exception while no cancel is requested. It fails the file with the step as its failed operation and keeps the file, since an exception says nothing about the media. The process command still writes the file's result row.
The driver loop fails one file on an exception from its task, so every command that uses it continues with the next file. This replaces the plugin command's own wrapper, which did the same for plugins only.
Both catches key on the cancel state rather than the exception type. A plugin's own TaskCanceledException from a timeout fails one file, while a requested cancel still ends the run as a cancel.
ARCHITECTURE.md drops suspect branch S2 and redraws the Run Flow, Dispatch and Per-File Pipeline diagrams. HISTORY.md records the change under 3.23.
DeleteFailedFile() logs a delete that throws and reports the file as not deleted, so the result row is kept. A throw from the ProcessFile constructor names that step, and the error summary names the failed step beside the file's state.
PerFileExceptionTests covers the driver catch, with one error counted, the cancel exception thrown with no cancel requested, and a step that throws, keeping the file with DeleteInvalidFiles on. DeleteFailedFileTests covers a delete that throws.
The comments label is set because wrapping the step loop in try re-indents every comment inside it. git diff -w shows the real change.
Open Findings from the Local Pass
ARCHITECTURE.md:285, introduced: the Dispatch diagram's E1 edge label lacks "while no cancel is requested", which the Per-File Pipeline now states. With a cancel requested, an escaping exception leaves ForAll as a cancel, an edge this diagram does not draw. The local pass's edit budget was spent, so the review loop fixed it in ae798d1, which also draws the after-cancel edge.
Pre-existing Findings, Filed
PlexCleaner/ProcessFile.csMakeExtensionLowercase() and PlexCleaner/Convert.csReMuxToMkv(), pre-existing: a multi-step move that throws partway strands the media at a name the result row does not report, and a stranded .tmp7 is deleted as a non-MKV file on the next run. Filed as Keep a File Found When a Multi-Step Rename Fails Partway #1109.
Declined Findings
PlexCleaner/ProcessFile.csDeleteFailedFile(), introduced, declined under "Trust Boundaries and Hardening Effort": when the media delete succeeds and the sidecar delete then throws, the state lacks FileDeleted. That needs a sidecar that passed IsSidecarWriteable() to fail its delete right after the media delete, and the exception is logged at Error.
An exception in any processing step escaped Process.ProcessFile() and the per-file loop in
ProcessDriver.ProcessFiles(), so the PLINQ ForAll ended the run for every remaining file and the
command exited with 1. ProcessFile() now catches it, fails the file with the step as its failed
operation, and keeps the file, since an exception says nothing about the media. The driver loop
also fails one file on an exception from its task, which covers every command that uses it. A
cancel still propagates.
Fixes#1069

ProcessDriver.ProcessFiles() now fails one file on an exception from any task, so the plugin
command passes plugin.ProcessFile directly. The Dispatch diagram names an exception escaping
ProcessFile() as the source of a missing result row, and a wrapped TODO comment is one sentence
per line.

A plugin can throw a TaskCanceledException from a timeout of its own with no cancel requested.
Filtering on the exception type let it end the whole run, so both per-file catches key on the
cancel state instead.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
When cancellation is inactive, handled exceptions fail the affected file without stopping processing of later files. Exceptions during cancellation remain unhandled by the new catch filters. Tests cover continuation, failed-operation reporting, and media files that remain in place after processing or deletion errors.

Issue #1069 requires per-file failure, failed-operation recording, and continuation. Process.ProcessFile() catches exceptions when cancellation is not requested, records the active operation, fails the file, and keeps the file. Explanation
The changed production code, tests, diagrams, and history entry support issue #1069. The CustomCommand wrapper removal is related because ProcessDriver.ProcessFiles() now provides the shared per-file exception handling. The DeleteFailedFile() handling preserves result reporting after a deletion exception. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Keep both catch boundaries: the pipeline catch can retain the failed step and preserve media while allowing a process result row; the shared driver catch covers other commands and exceptions escaping the pipeline. Catching only at either boundary would lose one of those behaviors.

1. Cleanup failures vanish from result files✓ Resolved
Description
The new driver catch sets taskResult to false when DeleteFailedFile() throws, but that cleanup
runs after the ProcessFile catch and before the process callback adds its result row. When
deletion of a failed media file or sidecar throws, the driver counts an error and continues, while
the detailed error list and results JSON omit that file.
DeleteFailedFile performs File.Delete calls that can throw. It executes outside ProcessFile's try
block; the driver catches the exception, but result insertion is later in the callback and is never
reached.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
The driver catches a failed-file cleanup exception after the process callback has lost its chance to record a result row.
## Fix Focus Areas
- PlexCleaner/Process.cs[385-403]
- PlexCleaner/Process.cs[502-550]
- PlexCleaner/ProcessDriver.cs[216-220]
## Recommended Fix
Handle cleanup exceptions within per-file processing so it can retain the failure, identify the cleanup operation, and return the available path and state to the callback. Keep the driver catch for exceptions from other tasks.

2. A failed rename strands the media file 🐞 Bug≡ Correctness
Description
MakeExtensionLowercase moves the original to .tmp7 before its second move, but if that move
throws, the catch marks the operation skipped without refreshing the path, so processing continues
with the media at .tmp7 while the result names the absent original. Convert.ReMuxToMkv installs
the MKV before deleting the input, but if deletion throws, the catch fails the file before the
caller records the new path or modification, leaving the result pointed at the old path with
modified false even though the MKV exists.
+ // An exception says nothing about the media, so fail the file without deleting it+ result = false;+ skipped = true;
Evidence
In the extension rename, the first move changes the on-disk path before the second can throw; the
catch suppresses failure cleanup, and FileInfo is refreshed only after both moves succeed. In the
remux, the output move precedes input deletion, while the caller updates its path and modification
state only after conversion returns; the catch therefore turns a deletion exception into a
failed-file result without those updates.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
Failures after an on-disk move can leave a file at a path the caught result does not report: a failed second extension rename leaves it at `.tmp7`, while failed remux input deletion leaves a completed MKV unreported.
## Fix Focus Areas
- PlexCleaner/ProcessFile.cs[120-129]
- PlexCleaner/Convert.cs[70-80]
- PlexCleaner/ProcessFile.cs[158-177]
- PlexCleaner/Process.cs[378-402]
## Recommended Fix
Make the two-stage rename recoverable: if the second move fails, restore the original when possible, or otherwise update or report the path where the file remains. When the remux output move succeeds but input cleanup fails, reconcile the output path and modification state so the caught failure reports the files actually left on disk. Keep both failure paths non-destructive; do not delete the original merely because an exception occurred.

3. The dispatch diagram misstates cancellation✓ Resolved
Description
The new exception edge from ProcessFile() always leads to a failed file, but the driver catch only
handles exceptions while no cancellation is requested. If cancellation has been requested, the
exception instead escapes that per-file catch, so the diagram gives a later reader the wrong route
for that case.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
The dispatch diagram shows all escaping per-file exceptions being converted to failed-file results, including exceptions during cancellation.
## Fix Focus Areas
- ARCHITECTURE.md[285-286]
## Recommended Fix
Label the failed-file edge as applying only when no cancellation is requested, and show or describe the cancellation path separately.

🟡 Changes recommended
An active nit remains in ARCHITECTURE.md because its label overstates the behavior of the no-cancel error path when cancellation has already been requested.
This pull request makes per-file processing exceptions non-fatal, allowing subsequent files to continue while preserving failed files for reporting and retry.
Changes:
Catch processing-step exceptions and record the failed operation without deleting the affected file.
Centralize per-file task exception handling in ProcessDriver.ProcessFiles(), including plugin processing.
Preserve cancellation as run-wide behavior.
Add regression tests and update the architecture and release history documentation.

Assert the per-file error count in the throwing-callback tests.
Both ProcessFiles_TaskThrows_FailsOneFileAndContinues and ProcessFiles_TaskThrowsCancelWithoutCancel_FailsOneFileAndContinues assert only the return value and the processing order. If the driver's catch set taskResult = true, both tests would still pass. The thrown file would then skip the errorCount increment, the error log, and Metrics.FileErrored(). ProcessFiles would still return true, because it returns !error and per-file failures never set error. The test names say the file fails, but no assertion checks that.
errorCount is a local variable in ProcessFiles. Metrics.FileErrored() increments the private static s_filesErrors counter. Observing either value requires a test hook, such as a MeterListener on the Metrics meter. The meter name and the test project's access to such a hook were not checked, so no code change is proposed here.

DeleteFailedFile() logs a delete that throws and reports the file as not deleted, so the process
command still records the file's result row. A throw from the ProcessFile constructor names that
step as the failed operation, the error summary names the failed step beside the file's state, and
the driver tests assert the per-file error count.

CodeRabbit follow-up on DeleteFailedFileTests.SidecarDeleteThrows_ReturnsFalse, asserting FileDeleted stays unset: declined. The test proves the behavior this pull request adds, that a throwing delete is caught and reported as not deleted. If the catch were missing, the call would throw and the test would fail. An unset FileDeleted after the media delete succeeded is the half-done state the description lists under Declined Findings. Asserting it would pin that state rather than test a requirement.
