Replace the Original Only After ReEncode and DeInterlace Fully Succeed - #1110
ReEncode() and DeInterlace() moved their temp output over the original before their last steps ran. A failed remux or language restore then left a rewritten file with no ReEncoded or DeInterlaced flag, reported as not modified.
Convert.ConvertToMkv() runs the FfMpeg pass, the MkvMerge remux and the MkvPropEdit language restore on .tmp1, then moves it over the original. ReEncode() passes the original's MkvMerge props in for the restore and no longer runs those steps itself.
DeInterlace() restores the track languages in .tmp9, then moves it over the original. A failed restore deletes .tmp9.
MkvPropEdit edits a Matroska file by content, so a temp extension works. A probe that ran mkvpropedit --edit track:1 --set language=fr on a generated .tmp1 file set the language.
ReplaceOriginalTests drives both steps with fake tools. Moving either language restore back after the move fails its test. The shared fake-tool helpers move into FakeTools, which VerifyToolErrorTests now uses too.
ARCHITECTURE.md drops suspect branch S5 and redraws the Deinterlace, Re-Encode and Verify and Repair diagrams. HISTORY.md records the change under 3.23.
The decode-error cancel case in the issue needs no change. A cancel after the repair replaced the file returns before the sidecar is written, and Process.ProcessFiles() drops a cancelled file's result. The next run sees changed media, resets the state and verifies the file again. The Verify and Repair diagram now says so instead of marking it suspect.
The comments label is set because the language restore comment moves with its code into Convert.ConvertToMkv().
Pre-existing Findings, Not Filed
PlexCleaner/Convert.csConvertToMkv() FfMpeg failure branch, pre-existing test gap: no test makes the FfMpeg pass fail. That branch deletes .tmp1 and returns before any move, unchanged by this change.
PlexCleaner/ProcessFile.csDeInterlace() HandBrake and MkvMerge failure branches, pre-existing test gap: no test makes them fail. Each deletes its temp files and returns before any move, unchanged by this change.
Declined Findings
PlexCleanerTests/ReplaceOriginalTests.csWriteFakeTools(), style, declined: the tempOutputs parameter name could read patterns, since the patterns also match inputs. It is a preference between defensible names, and the comment above it states what the patterns match.
PlexCleanerTests/ReplaceOriginalTests.cs MkvPropEdit log assertion, declined: asserting the logged track: and language= arguments. They come from MkvMergeProps.Clone() as before this change, and SetTrackLanguage() is not modified. The test proves the order, that the restore edits name.tmp1 before the move.
ReEncode() and DeInterlace() moved their output over the original before
the remux and the language restore ran, so a failure in those steps left
a rewritten file with no state flag and no modified report. Both now run
every step on the temp file and move it last. A decode-error repair that
already replaced the file records its state even when a cancel arrives.
Fixes#1072

Revert the decode-error cancel change, since the driver returns before it
records a cancelled file, so the change only added cancelled tool runs.
Add a DeInterlace test and move the shared fake-tool helpers into
FakeTools, so both test classes use one copy.

Re-encode and deinterlace now complete remuxing and track-language restoration on temporary files before replacing the original. Failures in those steps leave the original in place. New tests cover replacement and failure paths, and existing tests use shared fake-tool setup helpers.
ConvertToMkv accepts language metadata, remuxes the converted temporary file, and restores track languages before moving it to the output path. ReEncode passes cloned metadata to ConvertToMkv. The architecture and release notes describe the updated order.
DeInterlace restores track languages on the temporary remux and replaces the original only after restoration succeeds. The architecture notes update the related process flow and cancellation behavior.
Replacement tests and fake-tool setup PlexCleanerTests/FakeTools.cs, PlexCleanerTests/ReplaceOriginalTests.cs, PlexCleanerTests/VerifyToolErrorTests.cs
New tests check replacement on success, original-file preservation on failure, operation state, and temporary-file cleanup. Existing tool-error tests use shared helpers for fake scripts and sample media.

Staging each pipeline’s complete output before replacement directly addresses the failure without changing their distinct processing steps. A shared replacement abstraction would add indirection without a clear benefit for these two paths.

Complete re-encode processing before replacing input
• ConvertToMkv now accepts the original track properties, remuxes the staged output, and restores its languages before moving it over the original. A remux or language-restore failure deletes the temporary output.
ProcessFile.csDelay deinterlace replacement and delegate re-encode finishing steps+15/-22
Delay deinterlace replacement and delegate re-encode finishing steps
• DeInterlace restores languages on .tmp9 before replacement and deletes that file if restoration fails. ReEncode passes the original MkvMerge properties to ConvertToMkv instead of remuxing and restoring languages after replacement.
ReplaceOriginalTests.csTest replacement ordering with fake media tools+110/-0
Test replacement ordering with fake media tools
• Tests that conversion replaces the original after a successful language restore but preserves it when restoration fails. A deinterlace failure test checks that the original, modification flag, and state remain unchanged and temporary files are removed.
ARCHITECTURE.mdRedraw replacement order and remove resolved suspect branch+9/-9
Redraw replacement order and remove resolved suspect branch
• The deinterlace and re-encode diagrams place language restoration before replacement. The verify-and-repair diagram clarifies the cancelled repair’s next-run behavior, and the resolved S5 entry is removed.
This pull request makes re-encode and deinterlace replacement atomic by keeping output in temporary files until remuxing and language restoration succeed. It also adds regression coverage and updates related documentation.
Changes:
Moves remuxing and language restoration before replacing the original file.
Defers deinterlace replacement until language restoration completes.
Centralizes fake-tool helpers and expands replacement-safety tests.
Updates the architecture diagrams and version 3.23 history.
The review identifies a moderate test-coverage gap: ConvertToMkv() lacks a regression case for remux failure, including verification that the original file is preserved and temporary outputs are cleaned up.

Assert the language arguments that mkvpropedit receives.
The success case checks that the mkvpropedit log contains name.tmp1. That check confirms the call targets the temporary file before the move. It does not check the language content. The fake tool does not modify the file, so a wrong track number or language value in the SetTrackLanguage arguments still passes. Adding an assertion on the logged per-track language arguments would cover this handoff.

Add coverage for the successful DeInterlace replacement.
DeInterlace_LanguageRestoreFails_KeepsOriginal sets the propEditExit to 2, so DeInterlace returns at the language-restore failure. The file is not moved, and Refresh(true) is not called. No test checks the success path. A change that stops replacing the file on success, stops setting modified, stops setting the DeInterlaced flag, or leaves name.tmp* files would still pass the suite.
A success test must also satisfy Refresh(true). With sidecar files enabled, it calls SidecarFile.Open(true), which calls Update(true) and then GetToolInfo(). GetToolInfo() reads media properties from MediaInfo, MkvMerge, and FfProbe. The current fixture writes fake scripts only for FfMpeg, MkvMerge, HandBrake, and MkvPropEdit. Add fake output for the other reads, or cover this path through a seam that supplies the media properties, before adding assertions for true, the replaced content, the flag, and cleanup. Use propEditExit0 for the success case.

Add a success-path test alongside
DeInterlace_LanguageRestoreFails_KeepsOriginal, using propEditExit 0 in
WriteFakeTools. Make Refresh(true) succeed by supplying the required MediaInfo,
MkvMerge, and FfProbe outputs or using a seam to provide media properties;
assert DeInterlace returns true, sets modified and the DeInterlaced flag,
replaces the original content, and cleans up name.tmp* files.

Successful DeInterlace replace coverage: fixed in b7e1aad and 9fbd247. DeInterlace_ReplacesOriginalOnlyAfterLanguageRestore now has a success case asserting the replaced content, modified, the DeInterlaced flag and no name.tmp* left. A mutation that deletes .tmp9 instead of moving it fails that case. The return value is not asserted, since MediaInfo has no fake and the Refresh() after the replace fails, which the test comment states.
Asserting the mkvpropedit language arguments: declined. The track numbers and languages come from MkvMergeProps.Clone() exactly as before this change, ConvertToMkv() passes them to SetTrackLanguage() unchanged, and SetTrackLanguage() itself is not modified here. The test exists to prove the order, that the restore targets name.tmp1 before the move, which the log assertion covers.
The fake FfMpeg in WriteFakeTools always exits 0. The new cases vary only the MkvMerge and MkvPropEdit exit codes. No test makes FfMpeg fail after it writes a partial .tmp1. The production code removes the temp file and keeps the original on that path (Convert.cs:26-31), but a regression there would not fail any test.

Add a conversion test case that makes fake FfMpeg write a partial .tmp1 and then
exit unsuccessfully, and assert that the partial temp file is removed while the
original is preserved. Update WriteFakeTools to support a configurable FfMpeg
exit code for this case; retain the existing successful-FfMpeg behavior for
other tests.
Add a DeInterlace test for a failed MkvMerge remux.
Add a DeInterlace test for a failed MkvMerge remux.
DeInterlace tests fix MkvMerge to exit 0, so no test covers its remux-failure branch. A regression that replaces the original after a failed remux would pass both cases. Add a MkvMerge exit 2 case, as ConvertToMkv_ReplacesInputOnlyAfterEveryStep does, and assert that the original bytes remain.

The test checks only that the log contains name.tmp1. A call with wrong track:@N or language= arguments still passes. Add assertions for the logged --edit track:@N --set language=... arguments that SetTrackLanguage builds for the sample.

Review comment at @PlexCleanerTests/ReplaceOriginalTests.cs at line 86:
Extend the assertion in the test around propEditLog to verify the logged --edit
track:@N and --set language=... arguments produced by SetTrackLanguage for the
sample, not just the presence of name.tmp1.
The success branch never asserts deInterlaced. When Refresh(true) fails after the replacement, DeInterlace returns false (ProcessFile.cs:1411-1414), and the caller stops processing on that false (Process.cs:253-258). A regression that returns false after a successful replacement would still pass this test.
The fixture sets UseSidecarFiles = true, so Refresh goes through SidecarFile.Open. That path can call the MediaInfo tool, and the test does not fake a MediaInfo executable. A MediaInfo script alone may not be enough: the sidecar path parses the MediaInfo output, so the fake must emit output the parser accepts.
Assert the return value once the fixture can complete Refresh.

Update the success case in the DeInterlace test to assert the returned
deInterlaced value is true, and configure the fixture’s MediaInfo sidecar path
to provide output accepted by the parser so Refresh(true) can complete.
