Accept an Undefined Rewritten Video Language Before Restoring Tags - #1164
HandBrake writes the video track language as und, even when the source track is eng. The track check that Convert.RestoreLanguageTags() runs before restoring the IETF tags compared each track's ISO 639-2B language exactly. So every HandBrake deinterlace, and the HandBrake fallback of the re-encode repair, failed with Rewritten tracks do not match the original tracks for any file whose video track carries a language. The original stayed, and the file ended in Errors.
A rewritten video track whose language is undefined now passes the check, since the restore that follows sets it. A dropped track, a type change, a different defined language, or an undefined audio or subtitle language still fails the rewrite. The exception is limited to video because swapped audio tracks written as und would otherwise take each other's languages.
Evidence
A synthetic interlaced H.264 file with eng video and audio, run through the image's HandBrake 1.11.2 with PlexCleaner's deinterlace arguments, comes out with video und and audio eng.
The full-corpus regression run of develop failed every HandBrake rewrite of a file with a tagged video language, and passed every one whose video was already und.
Copies of the affected corpus files, processed by this branch's build inside ptr727/plexcleaner:latest with the regression settings:
Every deinterlace succeeds, and each output keeps its track count with the video language restored.
A file with a subtitle track keeps it through the HandBrake subtitle merge, with its language and IETF tag.
A copy retagged to en-GB audio and en-US subtitle keeps both region tags through the HandBrake run and the subtitle merge.
A file whose audio has no decoder, such as encrypted audio, ends RepairFailed with its original and audio intact. Before 3.23 the HandBrake repair fallback dropped that track and reported the file as repaired.
Tests
RestoreLanguageTags_EditsOnlyWhenTracksMatch gains an undefinedvideo case that passes and asserts the video track's language is set, and an undefinedaudio case that fails.
DeInterlace_HandBrakeOutput_RestoresUndefinedVideoRefusesDroppedAudio drives the HandBrake deinterlace with an output whose video is und, which restores the language, and one that drops an audio track, which fails with the original byte-identical.
VerifyAndRepair_UndecodableAudio_HandBrakeDropsTrack_KeepsOriginal fails every FFmpeg verify and re-encode with "no decoder found", lets the HandBrake output without the audio verify clean, and asserts the track check alone keeps the original.
Mutation checks: develop's Convert.cs fails both video und cases, and ignoring a failed track check in ConvertUsingHandBrake fails the repair and dropped-audio tests.
FakeTools.WriteChangedIdentify and an optional leading identify case on WriteSampleToolData replace three copies of the same fixture code in this file.
Full suite: 498 passed.
Dropped findings
PlexCleanerTests/ReEncodeBitrateStateTests.csAddSubtitleTrack, consolidation onto FakeTools.WriteChangedIdentify, on a file this change does not touch.
Video conversions no longer fail when HandBrake marks the video language as undefined. PlexCleaner restores the original language tag during deinterlacing or re-encoding, while continuing to reject other track mismatches and preserve the original file.
Language-tag restoration through the FFmpeg remux fallback is supported for Matroska input; other input formats do not receive this fallback behavior.
HandBrake writes the video track language as und, so the track check
that RestoreLanguageTags() runs before restoring the IETF tags failed
every HandBrake deinterlace or re-encode of a file whose video track
carries a language. The original stayed, and the file ended in error.
A rewritten track whose language is undefined now passes the check,
since the restore that follows sets it. A dropped track, a type
change, or a different defined language still fails the rewrite.

Swapped audio tracks written as und would otherwise take each other's
languages, and only HandBrake's video track is written as und.

Walkthrough
The track-matching check now accepts an undefined language on a rewritten video track. Tests cover video language restoration, rejection of an undefined-language audio track, and rewritten outputs that drop tracks. Documentation records the behavior.

Restore tagged video languages after HandBrake rewrites
🐞 Bug fix🧪 Tests📝 Documentation🕐 10-20 Minutes
AI Description
• Accept undefined rewritten video languages so HandBrake deinterlace and re-encode can restore
their tags.
• Continue rejecting dropped, reordered, or mismatched tracks and undefined rewritten audio
languages.
• Add regression coverage and document the video-only exception.

High-Level Assessment
The following are alternative approaches to this PR:
1. Normalize language only in the HandBrake path
➕ Keeps the shared track check strict for FFmpeg rewrites.
➖ Adds HandBrake-specific preparation before the existing restoration check.
Recommendation: Keep the video-only exception in the shared check: it is small, preserves strict matching for audio and subtitles, and lets the existing restoration step set the language. Reviewers should note that it also accepts undefined video languages from other callers of that check.

A deinterlace whose HandBrake output writes the video as und restores

encrypted audio, ends RepairFailed when the HandBrake fallback drops
the track, rather than replacing the original with a file missing it.

🟡 Changes recommended
Two unresolved nit-level findings remain: an added comment in Convert.cs that repeats existing rationale and should be removed, and a test case in ReplaceOriginalTests.cs whose name does not indicate it covers a video track.
This PR fixes HandBrake rewrites failing on files whose video track has a language. HandBrake writes the video track's language as und, so the track check that runs before Convert.RestoreLanguageTags() rejected every such rewrite. The check now accepts an undefined rewritten video language, because the restore that follows sets it. Audio and subtitle languages are still compared exactly, so swapped audio tracks cannot take each other's languages.
Changes:
HasSameTracks accepts an undefined video language in the rewritten output. Other track checks are unchanged.
The test RestoreLanguageTags_EditsOnlyWhenTracksMatch gains an undefined video case that passes and an undefined audio case that fails.
The HISTORY and ARCHITECTURE entries describe the new video-only exception.

Add a case with two video tracks that have different original languages and whose rewritten languages are both und. Assert an --edit track:@N --set language=... argument for each video track number. The assertions fail if either video receives the wrong track number or language.

only still-valid issues, skip the rest with a brief reason, keep changes
minimal, and validate.

Extend the test containing the `InlineData("undefined", true)` case with a
scenario using two video tracks with different original languages, both
rewritten to `und`. Assert that the generated arguments contain the correct
`--edit track:@N --set language=...` entry for each track, verifying both track
numbers and language values.

Let the HandBrake output verify clean in the undecodable audio test,
as real output without that audio does, so the original stays only
because the track check refuses it. Share one helper for writing a
changed sample identify, name the video case undefinedvideo, and drop
the comment that ARCHITECTURE.md already states.

@coderabbitai Declining the nitpick "Add per-track edit coverage for two undefined video tracks" (ReplaceOriginalTests.cs:406 on f99d8fb). No rewrite can see two video tracks written as und: RemuxRemoveExtraVideoTracks (PlexCleaner/Process.cs:174) leaves one video track before closed caption removal (:246), deinterlace (:256), re-encode (:311), and verify repair (:321). HandBrake writes one video track, so a two-video input fails the track count check before any language comparison, and FFmpeg keeps track languages. The per-track --edit track:@N --set language= arguments come from MkvPropEditTool.SetTrackLanguage, which this change does not touch.

@ptr727 Agreed. I withdraw the request for two-undefined-video-track coverage.
I checked the pipeline in PlexCleaner/Process.cs. It removes extra video tracks and checks track counts before the rewrite stages you listed. Convert.HasSameTracks() also rejects a track-count mismatch before comparing languages.
The suggested test does not represent a supported rewrite path. This PR does not need that additional test.
