Harden Ignore List Pruning and Retry a Failed Settings Write - #1123
IsMissingFile lists the parent folder and compares names case-insensitively when File.Exists is false, and keeps the entry on any exception. This covers access denied, stale shares, and case mismatch on Linux. Names are compared literally, so * and ? in a name are not wildcards, and hidden files are listed.
A failed settings write sets a static pending flag, so the next RegisterInvalidFiles call retries it. A successful write clears it.
The prune rule (parent folder exists) and pruning after every batch are unchanged, per the maintainer's decision on the issue.
Monitor.ProcessChanges is internal, and the end of ProcessCommand moves into internal Program.RunProcess, both for tests.
Tests: full paths in PostRunWriteTests, case mismatch, wildcard and hidden entries, write retry, monitor continuing after a write failure, and the error exit code with DeleteEmptyFolders still running.
HISTORY.md and the ARCHITECTURE.md prose are deferred by the maintainer to one final docs pull request. The comments label is applied because the change adds code comments.

it on any exception. Retry a failed settings write on the next call. Test
Monitor continuing after a write failure and the process exit code.

Walkthrough
The changes revise ignore-list pruning, add retry state for failed settings writes, and extract the processing flow into RunProcess. Tests cover pruning conditions, write retries, monitor continuation, and run-level cleanup.
Missing-file checks retain entries when the parent folder is unavailable, enumeration fails, or a case-insensitive filename match exists. Tests cover full paths, case mismatches, wildcard characters, and unreadable folders.

High-Level Assessment
Keep the targeted approach: folder enumeration distinguishes missing files from case mismatches and access failures without treating filenames as patterns, while a pending flag reuses the existing settings writer on the next call. A separate retry service or wildcard-based lookup would add complexity or weaken correctness.

1. Monitor batches still check every ignore entry 📎 Requirement gap➹ Performance
Description
IsMissingFile now lists the whole parent folder with EnumerateFiles for each missing-looking
entry, on top of the Directory.Exists and File.Exists calls. RegisterInvalidFiles still runs
RemoveWhere(IsMissingFile) on every call, and monitor mode reaches it after every batch through
ProcessChanges, ProcessFiles and FinishProcessing. Network storage therefore sees a stat for
every entry and a folder listing for each missing one after every batch.
The ticket-derived rule requires monitor mode to avoid unnecessary per-entry filesystem checks after
every batch. The PR keeps pruning on every batch, and the new folder listing makes each pass more
expensive.
2. Deleted-file tests pass without the filter 📎 Requirement gap⚙ Maintainability
Description
RegisterInvalidFiles_DeletedFile_IsSkipped and
RegisterInvalidFiles_OnlyDeletedFiles_WritesNothing use missing file paths under an existing
folder, allowing RegisterInvalidFiles to prune deleted entries after adding them. If the
FileDeleted filter is removed, both tests still pass because pruning produces the asserted ignore
lists; the PR description also acknowledges this gap.
The changed tests pass paths for missing files under _directory, which the test constructor
creates. Because RegisterInvalidFiles prunes missing entries after adding results, that pruning
alone produces the asserted ignore lists even without the FileDeleted filter; the PR lists this as
an open introduced finding.

## Issue description
The deleted-result tests can pass through pruning even if deleted results are erroneously added to the ignore list.
## Fix Focus Areas
- PlexCleanerTests/PostRunWriteTests.cs[61-79]
- PlexCleanerTests/PostRunWriteTests.cs[150-164]
## Recommended Fix
Create the file named by each deleted result before calling `RegisterInvalidFiles`. An incorrectly added entry will then survive pruning and fail the existing assertions.

3. Permission test can pass without an error✓ Resolved
Description
RegisterInvalidFiles_UnreadableFolder_KeepsEntry removes directory permissions but does not verify
that File.Exists(entry) fails before asserting the entry is kept. A non-root process with
DAC-override capability can still resolve the file, causing IsMissingFile to return before
enumeration and leaving the exception-handling path untested.
The test guards only against the username root before removing permissions. Its assertion checks
retention, which also occurs on the File.Exists early-return path, so the assertion cannot
establish that enumeration threw.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
The unreadable-folder test may pass without exercising the enumeration-error path when its process can bypass directory permissions.
## Fix Focus Areas
- PlexCleanerTests/PostRunWriteTests.cs[297-324]
## Recommended Fix
After removing permissions, verify the file lookup is blocked and the directory cannot be enumerated. Skip the test if the process can still access the directory, and retain permission restoration in `finally`.

🟡 Changes recommended
Three unresolved moderate findings remain: IsMissingFile relists parent folders for each missing entry on every monitor-mode call, and two PostRunWriteTests cases can pass without exercising the filter or the catch path they target.
This PR hardens how FileIgnoreList entries are pruned and retries a failed settings write. Ignore-list entries for missing files are pruned only when their parent folder exists. Pruning now also handles access errors and case mismatches, and a failed write is retried on the next call. The change also adds tests for these paths and exposes two internal methods so tests can call them.
Changes:
IsMissingFile lists the parent folder and compares names case-insensitively when File.Exists returns false. Any exception keeps the entry.
A failed settings write sets a static pending flag, so the next RegisterInvalidFiles call retries the write. A successful write clears the flag.
Monitor.ProcessChanges becomes internal, and the end of ProcessCommand moves into internal Program.RunProcess. Both changes exist so tests can reach them.

Cache parent-folder listings when pruning ignore-list entries.

Cache parent-folder listings when pruning ignore-list entries.
IsMissingFile lists the parent folder for each entry whose File.Exists check fails. With many such entries under one large folder, each pruning pass repeats that listing. Cost grows with entry count times folder size. Entries that remain in the list, such as case-variant names, are listed again on every batch. Build one name set per folder within a single RegisterInvalidFiles call and reuse it.

Update RegisterInvalidFiles to build and reuse a case-insensitive set of file
names for each parent folder during a single call, and have IsMissingFile use
that cached set instead of re-enumerating the folder for every entry. Keep the
cache scoped to the call so later batches reflect current folder contents.
Use a missing folder for the deleted path in the FileDeleted test.
Use a missing folder for the deleted path in the FileDeleted test.
With the FileDeleted filter removed, RegisterInvalidFiles_DeletedFile_IsSkipped still passes. The deleted path is in an existing folder, so IsMissingFile prunes it and the list stays {kept}. A path under a missing folder is not pruned, so the entry remains and the Equal(kept) assertion fails.

Update the deleted path in RegisterInvalidFiles_DeletedFile_IsSkipped to place
it beneath a nonexistent subfolder, so IsMissingFile does not prune the entry
and the test verifies that RegisterInvalidFiles skips it.
Make the unreadable-folder test fail when the fallback is not reached.
296-325: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Low value
Make the unreadable-folder test fail when the fallback is not reached.
RegisterInvalidFiles_UnreadableFolder_KeepsEntry only exercises the enumeration fallback when File.Exists(entry) returns false. A non-root process with DAC-override capability still gets true from File.Exists. IsMissingFile then returns before the fallback. The test still passes, so a regression in the catch branch would not be detected in that environment.
Asserting the precondition makes the test fail in that environment instead of passing without exercising the fallback. Use a skip instead if the test framework supports it and that behavior is preferred.

Update RegisterInvalidFiles_UnreadableFolder_KeepsEntry to verify that
File.Exists(entry) is false before calling Process.RegisterInvalidFiles, so the
test fails rather than passing without reaching the enumeration fallback;
alternatively, skip the test when that precondition is not met if supported by
the test framework.

Declined. Pruning after every batch is the maintainer decision recorded on the issue, and the listing runs only for an entry whose file is missing from an existing folder.
Deleted-file tests pass without the filter
Fixed. gh pr diff shows the deleted entries under Path.Combine(_directory, "gone", ...), a folder that does not exist, so only the FileDeleted filter keeps them out of the list.
