Summary

  • In .github/workflows/validate-task.yml, a declared pip directory now runs the ruff its venv installs, as .venv/bin/python -m ruff, in both the "Lint Python step" and the "Check Python formatting step". It falls back to uvx ruff@latest only where the venv lacks ruff.
  • The pyright arm of the "Type check Python step" does the same: "$venv_python" -m pyright --pythonpath "$venv_python" where the venv installs pyright, else uvx pyright@latest --pythonpath "$venv_python". This matches the existing mypy branch's find_spec test.
  • A uv directory, a lint-only directory, and an undeclared root keep their current calls. The "Sync Python dependencies step" already builds the venv for every declared pip directory before the lint steps run.
  • tests/test_release_guards.py: the stub venv interpreter now answers find_spec per module. A new test covers both ruff steps across declared pip with and without venv ruff, undeclared pip, lint-only, and uv. Two new type-check cases cover the pyright arm.
  • Docs: the python-codestyle skill (SKILL.md and references/profiles.md), docs/reusable-workflows.md, and the VS Code tasks snippet's comment now state the precedence. Three long sentences on the edited docs/reusable-workflows.md line were split.

The workflow and test changes add or edit comment lines, so this pull request carries the comments label.

Findings from the local passes

The findings listed for the first two pushes are fixed in 2e8fb46, 4129684, 769ab96, b31ea6c, and 1debbcc. The Dependabot snippet's missing pip ecosystem is pre-existing and filed as #3101.

The pass over 1debbcc raised three more. Each has an outcome here:

  1. style, declined. The pyright probe in the "Type check Python step" repeats the mypy probe with another module name, and the two could share one sys.argv probe. No existing helper does this job, and the two ruff steps are separate run: scripts that cannot share one. Merging the pair would rewrite the pre-existing mypy probe for no behavior change.
  2. style, declined. The workflow comment "It falls back to uvx only where the venv holds none." states the fallback condition. Prefer the Caller's Venv Ruff and Pyright in the Validate Lint Job for a Pip Directory #2850 asks for the precedence to be documented, and the venv-first, uvx-second order is that precedence.
  3. Declined on evidence. The reviewer counted 26 whitespace tokens in the pre-commit header's first new sentence, or 24 with its code span as one word. prose_lint.py --check sentence-length over the branch diff reports no violation at 1debbcc.

Closes on promotion: #2850

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Python linting and type checking now use tools installed in declared pip environments when available, with fallback tools used otherwise. UV-managed projects continue to use their locked tools.
    • Editor guidance now notes that Pyright versions may differ between the editor and command-line or CI checks.
  • Documentation
    • Updated Python setup guidance to clarify which tool versions are used for declared and undeclared directories.
  • Tests
    • Expanded coverage for tool selection across pip and UV project setups.

The validate lint job now runs a declared pip directory's own ruff and
pyright, through its venv interpreter, wherever the venv installs them,
as the type check already did for mypy. It falls back to uvx @latest
only for a tool the venv lacks. A uv directory, a lint-only directory,
and an undeclared root keep their current calls.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The local pass found the new prose over the sentence-length limit and
the VS Code tasks snippet still naming only uvx ruff for a pip-form
directory, against the skill section it cites.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The python-codestyle profiles reference now states that a declared
pip directory runs ruff and its checker from the environment. The
lint-only ruff case carries a venv stub so it proves the kind guard.

📝 Walkthrough

CI now uses tools installed in declared pip directories when available, with uvx fallbacks. Guidance and tests describe and verify tool selection for pip-form and uv-managed directories.

Changes: Python Tool Selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Document tool selection
.agents/skills/python-codestyle/SKILL.md, .agents/skills/python-codestyle/references/profiles.md, docs/reusable-workflows.md, catalog/snippets/configs/vscode-tasks-python.json, catalog/snippets/pre-commit/.pre-commit-config.yaml
The guidance describes when CI uses tools installed in a declared pip directory and when it falls back to uvx. It also documents Pyright interpreter paths and the distinction between pinned CLI and Pylance versions.
Select CI tools and verify commands
.github/workflows/validate-task.yml, tests/test_release_guards.py
Lint and formatting use environment-installed Ruff for declared pip directories when available. Type checking uses environment-installed Pyright when available and otherwise uses uvx with the environment interpreter. Tests cover these paths and uv-managed Ruff commands.

The tool-selection behavior appears correct. Strengthen the tests to catch a future regression to the wrong Python environment; this is a bounded follow-up rather than a current workflow failure.

The carried Dependabot snippet carries no pip ecosystem, so the
workflow comment and skill no longer say Dependabot tracks the pin.
The pip-form loop block and the pre-commit snippet now name the venv

A declared pip subdirectory case proves the probe reads that
directory's own venv. The reusable-workflows sentence now excludes a
directory carrying uv.lock, and the pre-commit snippet names the
Windows interpreter path.

The pre-commit snippet and the skill now name a declared directory as
the case where CI runs the venv's tool, and the workflow comment and

The VS Code tasks comment and the skill's loop block now limit the venv
ruff swap to a declared directory. The pre-commit header names the
declared directory in each interpreter path, since a hook runs from the
root. The pyright anchor sentence no longer says the editor and CI
never disagree, since a pinned pyright can lag Pylance.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A hook runs from the repository root with no path, so the swap matches
CI only for a declared root. The VS Code tasks comment names its
pytest subject again after the ruff line split.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Both ruff lines in the VS Code tasks comment now name the pip form, and
the pre-commit header drops its subdirectory sentence, which held for
ruff but not for a checker running from the root config.

1103-1114: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Assert the venv interpreter path in Ruff and Pyright tests.

The stub logs only python $*, so the selection tests check module arguments but not the executable that received them. A different Python executable with the same stub behavior can pass these tests. Record the resolved receiver path and assert the declared directory's .venv/bin/python.

Answering CodeRabbit's nitpick block (1) in its review of 1debbcc8.

tests/test_release_guards.py:1103-1114: Assert the venv interpreter path in Ruff and Pyright tests. "The stub logs only python $*, so the selection tests check module arguments but not the executable that received them."

No change needed. The logging stub exists only where the harness writes it, for venv_python in work.glob("**/.venv/bin/python") in run_python_tests_step. Each venv case's constructed tree holds exactly one such path, the root .venv/bin/python or, in the subdirectory case, sub/.venv/bin/python with no root venv. No other executable on the test's PATH writes to STUB_LOG for -m ruff or -m pyright, so a python -m ruff line can come only from that one interpreter. The subdirectory case proves this. With the probe rewritten to the root .venv/bin/python, both ruff steps fail that case, since the root has no stub to answer the probe and the step falls back to uvx.

… Fixes to Main (#3146)

- #3135 makes `gh-write-guard` read a gh write's subcommand and target
the way gh parses them: the subcommand is found past flags before the
command and before the subcommand, an `R` inside a short-option cluster
is read as a target, `GH_REPO` is read as a target, a run-time
repository owner on a write fails closed, and a run-time word where `pr`
or `merge` goes fails closed beside `--admin` or where word splitting
may split it
- #3139 releases the bootstrap lock when a `bootstrap.ps1` run ends
rather than when its process does, so a second run typed at the same
pwsh prompt is no longer refused the lock
- #3130 matches tool names and the `all` keyword by case in the Windows
agents loaders, as the Linux loaders already do
- #3128 reads CodeRabbit's rate limit on a reply to an explicit review
command in `pr_review.py`
- #3126 reconciles VSCode-Server-DotNetCore in the hub after its resync
- #3124 logs the Docker task's build-base leg in to Docker Hub
- #3122 names the carried skill and the skipped review correctly
- #3120 states the subprocess encoding rule in `CODESTYLE.md`, where
carriers read Python style
- #3118 and #3111 move the release-guard tests' workflow-command checks
onto `runner_commands`, and test the alternatives wiring at the
`audit_repo` and `fidelity_pass` call sites
- #3116 stops the doc gates' printed names forging workflow commands
- #3113 adds a catalog snippet for the release-with-smoke caller
- #3109 moves the `workflow_reuse` fetch onto `audit.contents_text`
- #3105 accepts `.codecov.yml` as an alternative to `codecov.yml`
- #3103 adds a pip ecosystem to the carried Dependabot snippet
- #3100 prefers the venv's ruff and pyright for a declared pip directory
- #3098 tracks composite action pins in Dependabot
- #3096 reads an uppercase Markdown suffix as Markdown at every prose
gate branch

After this merges, the host-safety installer payload changes, so the
maintainer runs the installer after promotion.
