Summary

Streamed Messages error events now carry proxy-written error data. This is the streaming counterpart of the Messages error-response normalization in #8153.

  • Scope: on native and caller-forward Messages streams, an SSE block whose first non-comment field is event: error has its data replaced by an owned Anthropic error payload. The data uses fixed text for the classified condition and closed type/code values.
  • Compaction is unchanged: the replacement is chosen from the full error payload (held in memory up to 1 MiB), using the same diagnostic selection as the buffered Messages paths. Whether the client message contains prompt is too long / input is too long for requested model matches the previous behavior case for case.
  • Other blocks are unchanged: every block that does not start with event: error is relayed with the same bytes and delivery timing as before, and there is no prefix hold. A block that starts with event: error and is later renamed by another event field is replayed unchanged within the bound.
  • Proxy-generated stream tails: stall, byte-cap and read-error tails use fixed wording without counts or transport text.
  • Native non-stream fold: a collected event: error that already produced a proxy-built error envelope now returns 502 instead of 200. The payload is unchanged.
  • Above 1 MiB: the stream emits the fixed error The provider stream reported an error. with no compaction phrase, and the HTTP status is unchanged.
  • Workflow refusals: native Messages workflow refusals now carry the recorded spend detail, so the unassigned-pool guidance is selected.
  • Internal observers are unchanged: stream accounting, settlement callbacks, tool-guard decisions, collectors, combos and the request log still read the original stream.
  • Docs: guides/claude-code.md (English and locales) and reference/proxy-formats.md are updated. The structure docs are updated to match.

Verification

  • Baseline comparison: tests/fixtures/messages-sse-895a85989.json holds 386 cases recorded from 895a85989. The tests in tests/claude-integration/messages-sse-*.test.ts compare raw client-byte hashes, status and client recognition against it, without git at test time. Recognition is checked against the Anthropic TypeScript SDK message selection.
  • Native stream parity: tests/claude-integration/messages-native-stream-parity.test.ts was regenerated from 895a85989. Internal facts match the baseline on every row, and client bytes match on every non-error row. The native overflow, throughput, stall, cap and read-error rows deliberately carry the new owned wording.
  • Unit tests: tests/lib/messages-sse-error-presentation.test.ts, tests/server/messages-sse-error-filter.test.ts and tests/server/messages-sse-error-lifecycle.test.ts cover first-field eligibility, chunking, bounded holds, cancellation and failed enqueue.
  • Focused runs: every touched and new test file was run in isolation with a separate OPENCODEX_HOME/CODEX_HOME, plus one aggregate Messages run, with 0 failures. bun run test:changed also had 0 failures.
  • Full suite: bash scripts/ci/run-bun-test-batches.sh N/4 for N = 1–4.
    • Shards 1, 2 and 4 had 0 failures.
    • Shard 3: the three failures in tests/codex-integration/codex-cli-update-apply.test.ts also fail on origin/dev. They are blocked by Codex sessions active on the test machine.
    • Failures present only on this branch: none.
  • Other checks: bun run typecheck, bun run privacy:scan, bun run structure:check, the file-size ratchet, the test-layout checks, git diff --check and the docs build all pass.
  • Labels: ci:full is set for the full Ubuntu shards.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Messages streaming errors are now normalized when the first event field identifies an error. Recognized context-limit errors use fixed wording; oversized error blocks return a generic message without compaction wording.
    • Native non-streaming responses containing collected errors now return HTTP 502 instead of 200. Existing HTTP status is preserved for oversized streaming errors.
    • Throughput errors retain separate rate-limit wording.
  • Documentation
    • Updated multilingual guides and references to describe error wording, streaming limits, and response status behavior.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

Messages error responses now use fixed presentation rules. Eligible Messages SSE error blocks are normalized at the client boundary, with a 1 MiB hold limit. Collected native error events return HTTP 502. Tests, fixtures, and documentation cover the stream changes and related behavior.

Changes: Messages SSE error handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Error presentation and frame provenance
src/lib/messages-error-body.ts, src/lib/messages-sse-error-presentation.ts, tests/lib/messages-sse-error-presentation.test.ts, docs-site/src/content/docs/*/guides/claude-code.md
Diagnostic selection and SSE error payload formatting are added. Local error frames carry origin information. The guides replace provider-text truncation rules with fixed error wording.
Bounded SSE error filter
src/server/messages-sse-error-filter.ts, tests/server/messages-sse-error-filter.test.ts, tests/server/messages-sse-error-lifecycle.test.ts, docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/proxy-formats.md, structure/*
The filter normalizes blocks whose first non-comment field is an error event. It holds eligible suffixes up to 1 MiB, handles renamed events and stream completion, and releases held data on termination or failure.
Stream delivery and filter wiring
src/server/claude-messages.ts, src/server/messages-native.ts, src/server/messages-native-tool-guard.ts, src/server/messages-shared.ts, src/server/sse-payload-rewrite.ts, tests/claude-integration/messages-sse-*.test.ts, tests/responses/sse-payload-rewrite-continuation.test.ts
Native, guard, tap, and payload-rewrite paths pass frame context and the error filter through client-bound delivery. Integration tests cover error handling, delivery failures, control fields, and continuation behavior.
Collected errors and workflow refusals
src/server/messages-native.ts, tests/helpers/messages-overflow-assertions.ts, tests/helpers/messages-sse-fold-exceptions.ts, tests/helpers/messages-sse-workflow-case.ts, tests/claude-integration/messages-sse-workflow-refusal.test.ts
Collected native error events set the response and log status to 502. Workflow refusals receive spend detail. Tests cover the status exception and refusal cases.
Differential fixtures and test coverage
tests/helpers/messages-sse-*, tests/claude-integration/messages-sse-*.test.ts, tests/claude-integration/messages-native-stream-parity.test.ts, tests/fixtures/*, scripts/test-layout/layout-server-inbound.json
Differential fixtures and test helpers cover SSE lanes, framing, payload size boundaries, statuses, and stream outcomes. The parity baseline and test-layout mappings are updated.

Avoid per-line allocations when normalizing held error blocks.

ownedSuffix creates a regex match array for each line, filters and maps those arrays, and calls sseFieldValue twice per line. A held error block can contain up to about 524k short lines inside the 1 MiB hold. Each eligible error can therefore create many temporary objects on the event loop. Parse the held bytes in one pass and avoid the intermediate arrays.

Compare the FOLD-502 response body in the fold lane.

The fold branch checks status, internal settlements, and client recognition. It does not check the response body hash or length. The ordinary branch checks both. With status 502, unchanged internal settlements, and unchanged client recognition, a body that replaces the error message with a non-compaction sentence passes all six fold rows.

Add the pinned body comparisons to the fold branch:

Suggested fix
         if (lane === "fold") {
+          expect(after.bodySha256, key).toBe(before.bodySha256);
+          expect(after.bodyLength, key).toBe(before.bodyLength);

A mismatch against the 895a859 values means the head body differs from the base body for that row.

Pin the emitted message, type, and code for the unknown-type and overflow-selected SSE error inputs.

Sentinel absence and recognition parity do not protect the closed type/code values or the fixed wording. A rewritten payload can change those values and still pass the current checks.

  • In tests/lib/messages-sse-error-presentation.test.ts, the full diagnostic selection loop covers every non-echo, non-guard error-block row. It asserts only non-empty output, sentinel absence, and recognition parity.
  • The SSE fallback has a status-independent closed type and literal code test asserts only error.type for {"error":{"type":"unknown","code":"unknown"}}. The message and code are not asserted.
  • The overflow-selected row top-message (request_too_large / context_length_exceeded) has no exact message, type, or code assertion.
  • tests/helpers/messages-sse-assertions.ts does not compare bodies for error-block rows. The golden body checks apply only to non-error, rename, and tap rows.

Add exact toEqual assertions on the parsed error object for these two inputs in tests/lib/messages-sse-error-presentation.test.ts. The billing-error test already covers code-selected wording, and the OVERSIZE-1M test already pins its output. Other rows do not need new assertions.

Assert that absent and invalid spend detail omit unassigned-pool guidance.

The loop checks for unassigned-pool guidance only in the unbound case. It does not check that absent and invalid omit it. Current production code does not produce that guidance for those inputs, so this is a coverage gap, not an active defect. A regression that added the unassigned-pool sentence to those fallback responses would still pass every assertion in this loop.

The else branch also covers bound. That case never includes the unassigned-pool sentence, so the negative assertion holds there as well. The separate bound check stays unchanged.

Suggested test change

Apply the 1 MiB oversize fallback before the translator budget rejects a large error block.

For non-native Messages streams, relaySseWithBlockRewrite buffers each complete SSE block under translatorBudget before clientFilter sees it. An error block above the 32 MiB turn budget makes reserveTransient throw, and the relay errors the client stream. The streamed-error contract says that blocks above 1 MiB receive messagesSseOversizePayload(). Decide whether budget overflow should emit that payload, or whether oversize error blocks should bypass the rewriter buffer. No safe localized edit is established, so none is proposed.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Poor tradeoff

Let the empty-tool guard pass oversized event: error blocks to the client filter.

With tools: [], the guard throws at 32 MiB while it buffers an event: error block. The client filter never receives that block. The client then gets a generic stream failure instead of the fixed oversize error.

Suggested direction

The guard should not treat an oversized event: error block as a tool-catalog failure. It should forward that block to the filter so the filter can emit the fixed oversize payload. This change needs a regression test for an oversized error event with an empty tool catalog. I did not verify a safe localized diff, so none is proposed.

Add positive assertions for the fixed error text in the cap, stall, and read-error parity rows.

The changed branch checks only that native output is nonempty, differs from the baseline, and omits the old text. A head output with unrelated nonempty bytes passes. That output can omit the terminal event: error frame or contain corrupt text in its place. Each changed row needs assertions for its fixed client message and for the error frame that carries it. The existing tests cover parts of these native paths, but none checks this parity row.

Assert the fallback sentence for absent and invalid spend details.

For absent and invalid details, the native refusal returns the generic fallback sentence from src/lib/workflow-budget.ts. The test checks only that the text is nonempty and omits 987654321. The unbound assertion checks different text and cannot match these cases. A change to the fallback sentence, or output of the invalid scope name, would still pass.

Add a real spend-denial case for the recorded refusal detail.

The workflow helper removes the native spend gate and injects spendRefusalDetail directly. No test found in tests/ runs a real charge() denial through handleClaudeMessages and checks the detail or response text. A regression in the src/server/responses/request-spend.ts:211 assignment, or in the charge() path, would not fail these tests.

Add one case that exhausts a real spend budget with unbound pool history. Assert logCtx.spendRefusalDetail and the workflow_spend_exhausted response text. Reuse the owned spend-home setup already in the helper. Keep the gate unchanged, so the test runs the real denial path.

Assert exact error payloads for case-table error blocks.

The shared differential assertion checks only sentinel removal and clientRecognizes. It does not compare the owned payload's type, code, or fixed message for error blocks. A rewrite that changes those fields while keeping recognition can pass. Exact checks exist only for selected inputs, not for every case-table row. Add an expected owned payload for each eligible error block, and assert type, code, and message exactly.

As per path instructions, tests/**: "A behavior change in src/ should come with a focused regression test near the existing tests for that subsystem."

Add a test that denies charge() on the native gate and asserts no provider send.

The fixture at tests/helpers/messages-sse-workflow-case.ts:7-9 replaces the gate with an unconditional throw. Its sends === 0 assertion then holds by construction. Nothing in the fixture tests the non-enforced charge() denial at src/server/messages-native.ts:670.

Suggested regression coverage

Add a case in tests/claude-integration/messages-native.test.ts that leaves the physical budget non-enforced, makes spendTracker.charge() return false, and asserts that the fake provider fetch is never called.

Maintainer integration decision (dev, maintainer bypass per MAINTAINERS.md).

Exact head: 9e4b482 (0 commits behind dev).

  • Required CI on this head: ci, enforce-target, hygiene, gates, test 1/4-4/4 (ci:full) all pass.
  • Review threads: 0 unresolved. Codex review: no findings. CodeRabbit findings fixed or deferred as non-blocking follow-ups.
  • Code review: plan audit passed; fresh final review passed; each later delta rechecked by the same reviewer.
  • Security review (required: this change rewrites client-visible streamed error events): independent review passed on f4264e2 under an explicit contract (the data/id/retry/unknown fields of client-dispatched error events reach the client only as proxy-authored bytes). Later commits were reviewed by the maintainer: a type/code fallback for non-object error members (values still pass the fixed vocabulary) and a one-line fix for a stream stall when CR and LF of a contained block arrive in separate chunks.
  • Acceptance rule: HTTP status and the client-visible compaction trigger equal origin/dev on every recorded case; non-error SSE bytes and timing unchanged.

Accepted, documented limits: error blocks over 1 MiB fail closed to the proxy error without the compaction phrase; blocks that are not declared as error by their first field line, blocks renamed by a later event field, and SSE comment lines relay as origin/dev.

NOT RUN: cross-platform CI, installed Claude Code runtime checks, real-provider calls.

Resolve messages-native.ts against dev's owned Messages error responses
(lidge-jun#8153/lidge-jun#8164): keep dev's fail/failEvidence and stream frame hooks, with the
combo commitment flag marking both non-replayable after preflight accepts.

Drop this branch's tap changes that logged an upstream error event with its
mapped status and recorded usage on client cancel. Dev's executable parity
goldens (messages-native-stream-parity, messages-sse-passthrough-errors) pin
the existing 200 / usage-less rows, and neither change is needed for the
native combo cache replay; the combo preflight still reads the failure before
the first output byte. Tests now assert dev's normalized error wording.
