Summary

The direct Messages encoder classified generic-coded context overflows as HTTP 400 but omitted the compaction-triggering code. Apply the shared overflow verdict to the emitted code while preserving deterministic undeclared-tool errors, original error evidence and proxy/transport metadata.

Head 52c0fe231ca651402bc7d77014de1e827431ad8c normally merges prior head 70d7968390f8649ed028baa7c94ed34c3e40d62b with dev 0a30c551304927c93c26a96c034bd39a166c7460 (#8164). The original luvs01/opencodex#812 commit bd0c4d9714ecacd2e9074e744c8250dd99499a98 and both histories are preserved. The PR delta remains six files.

  • Keep the four generic-code/retryable: true stream/fold cases and an errorType: upstream_error variant.
  • Use fix(messages): normalize Messages error responses and Anthropic headers #8153's fixed compaction sentence. Five fixture IDs on the two direct-writer paths have explicit expected deltas against the immutable baseline; other paths keep their comparisons.
  • Preserve fix(messages): normalize streamed Messages error events #8164's native fold-502 expectations alongside those direct-writer deltas. The two lane sets are disjoint.
  • Align the upstream normalization fixture's generic-code case with the shared overflow contract: compaction code and fixed message on both stream paths, HTTP 400 on direct fold.
  • Preserve the predicate, fixture/golden data, assertions outside the declared deltas, time limits and documentation budgets.

Relationship to #8129: Its broader retry/plain-text change independently contains the same encoder normalization. This PR retains its focused fix and parity matrix; it does not include or replace that contributor's broader changes. Reconcile the overlapping hunk when either PR lands. Combined transport-send-count acceptance remains separate.

Verification

Current integration

Pinned Bun 1.4.4 on Windows, repository preload and test lock retained:

  • bun scripts/test.ts tests/claude-integration/messages-error-normalization.test.ts: 49 passed / 0 failed / 343 assertions.
  • bun scripts/test.ts tests/claude-integration/messages-overflow-baseline-contract.test.ts: 2 passed / 0 failed / 5 assertions.
  • bun scripts/test.ts tests/claude-integration/messages-sse-continuation.test.ts: 8 passed / 0 failed / 56 assertions. Repeated observations are not counted as additional coverage.
  • bun check --no-script --noEmit: 2,316 source files, no errors. The package-script invocation first hit a shared-dependency launcher remapping error; the direct pinned checker succeeded without reinstalling dependencies.
  • bun scripts/structure-ssot.ts, bun scripts/privacy-scan.ts, bun scripts/file-size-ratchet.ts and git diff --check: passed. Structure/size checks initially stopped on tracked files omitted by sparse checkout; materializing the required tracked paths resolved that environment issue without changing the commit.
  • Independent read-only review found no blocker. Parent verified the six reviewed blob IDs against the committed tree, both merge parents, and a clean worktree. Golden/case-table data remain identical to dev.

Exact-head CI41841057990 attempt 2 succeeded, with all four Ubuntu shards and aggregate passing; Catalog41841057866 succeeded. The CodeRabbit walkthrough names 52c0fe2 as both source and covered commit; check126617628554 succeeded and there are zero unresolved review threads, with pagination complete.

Attempt 1 remains cancelled, not a pass: test4/4's test step finished successfully, but job126612607255 exceeded the unchanged 15-minute total-job limit. One targeted retry reran only that shard and its aggregate; job126622664590 passed in 14m39s, aggregate126630997971 succeeded. Code, assertions, timeout, shard count and CI policy were unchanged. The 21-second margin is small; no further retry is scheduled.

ci:full covers the differential helper spawned by subprocess and golden/source data outside the parsed import graph. This is the repository's four-shard Ubuntu PR lane; native Windows/macOS policy skips do not establish platform acceptance.

Failed Windows validation and scope limits

The broader local run was not a pass. In the isolated messages-overflow-native.test.ts run, 1 passed / 14 failed / 14 errors / 190 assertions, exit 1, about 429 seconds. The 14 cases exceeded the unchanged 30-second budget for a 64-row child slice. A separate eight-row diagnostic completed, but that does not establish why the larger slices time out or exclude a regression.

Other native SSE/count-tokens/fold files also timed out. Source-oracle/path-filter diagnostics exposed Windows separator behavior; native passthrough also encountered ACL/EBUSY failures. These are recorded failures, not accepted native-platform coverage. No assertion or timeout was weakened. The full local suite and additional expensive paths were not repeated under the repository's resource exception; broader regression coverage is left to exact-head Ubuntu CI. Installed-app, live-provider, full native Windows/macOS and the combined #8129 one-send scenario remain unverified.

Prior-head evidence

At 70d7968, CI41810263300, Catalog41810263467 and CodeRabbit succeeded. That CI reported 19,500 passed / 41 skipped / 0 failed across 765 files, plus 9 fixture checks. Earlier local focused runs passed 94 tests / 31,670 assertions and 105 tests / 453 assertions. These remain evidence for those revisions and are not substituted for the new merge's CI.

The earlier CI41806517660 failure was an upstream fixture still expecting the old direct generic-overflow message/fold status; the two expectation corrections are retained. An earlier source-work broad test attempted an external x.ai connection and was blocked by automatic approval review; it was not retried or bypassed.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Owning docs and baseline-delta explanations are updated.
  • Focused local validation and source gates are recorded with failures and limits.
  • Independent code review covers the six committed result blobs.
  • Exact-head hosted CI and CodeRabbit coverage are complete.
  • Ready for maintainer review on this merged head.
  • Maintainer acceptance is complete.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Context-window overflow errors are consistently reported as context_length_exceeded, including when the upstream response uses a generic error code or is marked retryable.
    • Direct streamed and folded responses now agree on the overflow classification. Folded responses use HTTP 400 for these errors.
    • Undeclared tool-call errors retain their existing classification.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified how context-window overflow and terminal errors are represented in direct client responses.

Preserve the existing direct-encoder fix and cover four generic error codes across streaming and folded responses.

Verified tree matches local commit 25f1104c7631e713199de631505c1dba01ff49d3.

Walkthrough

The Messages encoder now uses shared context-overflow classification for terminal errors. Classified, non-deterministic overflow errors receive the context_length_exceeded code, including when the upstream error is retryable. Tests and documentation cover stream and folded-response behavior.

Cover a non-server_error error type in the generic-code overflow matrix.

Every case in this matrix sets errorType: "server_error". The direct encoder decides overflow from the message and code. It reads errorType only to exclude rate-limit, authentication, and permission types. Producers can also emit upstream_error, so this combination is reachable, but no case checks it. Pairing each generic code with a second error type keeps the matrix from implying that normalization depends on errorType.

The expected frame and status in this case do not change for the direct encoder. The parity assertions still compare the legacy path with the same hard-coded frame, so a difference on the legacy side would fail the test.

Add a non-retryable case for a generic-coded overflow.

Every generic-coded overflow case in the new test.each sets retryable: true. The encoder emits the overflow code without reading retryable. A regression that suppresses normalization only when retryable is false would pass these cases. Add one parity case for a non-retryable generic code, so the stream frame and folded status are checked on that path.

@coderabbitai review

Please review current head 52c0fe2 once. It normally merges prior head 70d7968 with dev 0a30c55 (#8164), preserving both histories. The helper conflict keeps native fold-502 expectations alongside the disjoint direct-writer overflow deltas; golden data is unchanged. CI41841057990 is running with ci:full. The PR stays draft pending current-head validation; the Windows timeouts and local coverage limits are recorded in its body.

Assert mediaType on the corrected direct-stream and direct-fold overflow rows.

These five rows take the error branch, which never compares mediaType. A Content-Type regression on them would pass the helper. The baseline and head values match for both lanes (null for direct-stream and application/json for direct-fold), so the added check passes at the current head. Keep the scope to correctedOverflow rows, because the header producers for the other error lanes were not established.

Canonical ChatGPT and official OpenAI native /responses/compact sends

upstream rejected them as invalid_encrypted_content. Only the custom gateway
send lowered them. Run scrubOcxCompactionItems on the non-gateway send as
well, so the envelopes become plain user summaries like on ordinary turns,
while native blobs stay byte-identical for these decoding destinations.

* fix(codex): preserve pre-output hold across safe WS heartbeats

The parameterised "relayed in the body" cases only checked the status, so a

to a non-negative safe integer.

* fix(terminal-guard): pass completion summaries that follow tool results (lidge-jun#8154)

* fix(terminal-guard): pass completion summaries that follow tool results

The Anthropic terminal guard read the latest user text and ignored tool
activity after it, so a normal turn (request -> tool calls -> tool
results -> short "done" summary) was classified suspicious_no_tool. The
relay then appended the plan-only nudge and re-asked the model, which
re-ran tools it had already run and repeated the cycle on every client
turn.

Tool calls or results after the latest user message now mark the turn as
already executed; only a renewed plan announcement (PLAN_INTENT_RE) is
still continued.

* fix(terminal-guard): stop the tool-activity pass at a stalled plan announcement

A text-only plan announcement after the last tool activity means the turn
stalled there, so a following completion is continued again, matching
recentTurnHasToolActivity. Pin the boundary for next-step wording: first-person
plans still continue, while a summary that suggests a next step to the user
passes.

* fix(mistral): keep replayed images within each model's per-request cap (lidge-jun#8174)

Mistral rejects requests that carry more images than a model accepts,
counting the whole replayed history: most vision models refuse a ninth
image with HTTP 400, and DeepSeek V4.1 Flash answers an opaque HTTP 503
(code 3800) past 20. A screenshot-heavy session then fails on every turn.

For the first-party Mistral destination, messagesToChatFormat now keeps
the newest image_url parts within the model's cap and replaces older ones
with a text note naming the cap, in the outbound copy only. The cap is the
new modelCapabilities.<id>.mistralMaxImages axis: an operator declaration
over the measured rows on the mistral registry entry, else the documented 8.
