Summary

Anthropic web-search sidecars could return partial text as success after a stream error, failed search tool, byte-limit truncation, or incomplete stream. Preserve bounded partial text while returning an error, including for incomplete stop reasons such as max_tokens; retain compatibility with clean EOF after a complete successful stop-reason delta.

Complete SSE blocks with no data are ignored. At the 64 KiB wire cap, a complete terminal or successful stop-reason delta is accepted only if a bounded one-second probe confirms EOF; extra bytes or unconfirmed EOF remain errors. Empty chunks cannot starve that probe, and reader cancellation is never awaited.

Closes #8158

The shared structure/providers-and-adapters.md contract is updated because it owns the web-search sidecar behavior. With coordinator approval, the scope also includes tests/adapters/anthropic/anthropic-model-routes.test.ts: its successful search fixture previously ended at EOF without a terminal event, which the corrected contract treats as incomplete; it now supplies message_stop.

References: Anthropic streaming events and errors, Anthropic web-search result errors, and the WHATWG SSE dispatch algorithm.

Verification

  • The initial focused parser tests failed before the fix on eight partial-result cases; additional clean-EOF, malformed-frame and empty stop-reason cases were also driven red before fixes.
  • After the initial implementation, review reproductions for complete field-only blocks and a complete terminal at the exact cap failed before the follow-up. Additional tests cover cap overflow in the same or a later chunk, unconfirmed EOF, synchronous empty chunks, CR/LF framing, max_tokens, and clean-EOF compatibility.
  • PATH="$PWD/node_modules/.bin:$PATH" bun test --isolate tests/adapters/anthropic/anthropic-model-routes.test.ts tests/web-search/web-search-anthropic.test.ts tests/web-search/web-search-anthropic-instance.test.ts — exit 0; 99 pass, 0 fail.
  • PATH="$PWD/node_modules/.bin:$PATH" bun run typecheck — exit 0.
  • PATH="$PWD/node_modules/.bin:$PATH" bun test tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts — exit 0, 9 pass.
  • PATH="$PWD/node_modules/.bin:$PATH" bun run structure:check — exit 0.
  • PATH="$PWD/node_modules/.bin:$PATH" bun run privacy:scan — exit 0.
  • PATH="$PWD/node_modules/.bin:$PATH" bun run test:changed — exit 1: 19,760 pass, 39 skip, 1 fail across 793 files on head 1496e2ca0958c0e17e40ab3b73f8c6532b9f57ec after rebasing onto 13d218475918d8663bdcdd6fa8da436df00c76ff.
  • The failing tests/responses/passthrough-deferred-tools.test.ts was run alone using PATH="$PWD/node_modules/.bin:$PATH" bun test --isolate tests/responses/passthrough-deferred-tools.test.ts on both that head and clean origin/dev 13d218475918d8663bdcdd6fa8da436df00c76ff: exit 0, 44 pass on each. The changed suite itself remains failed; CI must pass before merge.
  • A previous changed-test run was intentionally interrupted (exit 143) to fix the clean-EOF boundary at the cap before the final run.
  • Full bun run test not run locally because six lanes run concurrently. Hosted CI covers the wider Ubuntu test shards; macOS and Windows are covered by maintainer batch policy.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Web search now handles interrupted, malformed, and incomplete responses more reliably. When a response fails or ends unexpectedly, available text and sources are preserved, and the result is reported as an error.
    • Responses that exceed processing limits are reported as errors while retaining the text received up to that point. Complete responses ending within the limit are recognized correctly, and empty answers remain errors.
  • Documentation
    • Updated guidance to describe partial results, response limits, and error handling.

Walkthrough

The Anthropic sidecar parser now validates SSE framing and completion. It returns errors for failed or incomplete searches while retaining accumulated partial text and sources. Tests and documentation cover the updated behavior.

Changes: Anthropic search stream handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
SSE framing and completion tracking

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Suggested reviewers: luvs01

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 1496e

The Anthropic web-search parser now reports incomplete or failed streams while keeping partial text. Earlier concerns about byte-cap handling and field-only SSE blocks appear addressed. No concrete merge-blocking risk remains. The author reports that the broader changed-test run still had failures, so hosted CI should pass before merge.

Explanation

[#8158] The Anthropic parser and regression tests address search completion and errors. structure/providers-and-adapters.md documents the contract. The message_stop fixture in tests/adapters/anthropic/anthropic-model-routes.test.ts supports the corrected contract. The supplied whole-PR summary shows no unrelated changes.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#8158] src/web-search/anthropic-executor.ts retains partial text and reports read, stream, tool, byte-limit, and incomplete-answer errors. It also accepts clean EOF after a complete successful message_delta. The regression tests cover these cases. However, handleFrame sets sawMessageStop without checking complete at lines 90–102. At EOF, the parser processes an unterminated final frame with complete = false. A text frame followed by data: {"type":"message_stop"} without an SSE block delimiter therefore returns success, although the terminal event was not dispatched and the stream is incomplete. The focused test run passed, but the reported test:changed run failed.

Resolution

Require a complete message_stop frame before it establishes completion. Add a regression test for EOF after an unterminated message_stop that preserves partial text and returns an error.

Preserve the final CR-only frame at the byte limit.

If accepted bytes end at the limit with \r\r, the parser discards the final complete frame. A text delta in that frame is missing from the returned diagnostic text. Normalize the pending CR and process complete frames before clearing the buffer.

the existing behavior for oversized or incomplete streams, and add a boundary

complete blocks with no data are ignored, including field-only blocks after

Maintainer integration into dev under MAINTAINERS.md (lidge-jun, admin).

  • Checked head: 1496e2c; all 30 PR checks on this head passed (the cancelled test 4/4 from attempt 1 was rerun on the same head and passed).
  • Review: the Anthropic search sidecar now returns an error with partial text retained when the search tool errors, the stream errors, a frame is invalid, data follows message_stop, or the stream ends without a terminal; data-less SSE blocks and an exactly-at-cap terminal are handled with a bounded EOF probe. The success fixture in anthropic-model-routes.test.ts gained its missing message_stop. The remaining CodeRabbit thread was outdated and addressed in this head.

* fix(responses): lower ocx envelopes on native v1 compact (lidge-jun#8042) (lidge-jun#8151)

Canonical ChatGPT and official OpenAI native /responses/compact sends
forwarded OpenCodex-owned ocx1:/ocx2: compaction envelopes verbatim, so the
upstream rejected them as invalid_encrypted_content. Only the custom gateway
send lowered them. Run scrubOcxCompactionItems on the non-gateway send as
well, so the envelopes become plain user summaries like on ordinary turns,
while native blobs stay byte-identical for these decoding destinations.

* fix(codex): preserve pre-output hold across safe WS heartbeats

* test(codex): cover heartbeat cancellation and sequence bounds

* test(codex): assert the relayed refusal frame reaches the body

The parameterised "relayed in the body" cases only checked the status, so a
regression that dropped the frame would still pass. Assert the event marker and
message, and say in the transport contract that sequence_number is also bounded
to a non-negative safe integer.

* fix(terminal-guard): pass completion summaries that follow tool results (lidge-jun#8154)

* fix(terminal-guard): pass completion summaries that follow tool results

The Anthropic terminal guard read the latest user text and ignored tool
activity after it, so a normal turn (request -> tool calls -> tool
results -> short "done" summary) was classified suspicious_no_tool. The
relay then appended the plan-only nudge and re-asked the model, which
re-ran tools it had already run and repeated the cycle on every client
turn.

Tool calls or results after the latest user message now mark the turn as
already executed; only a renewed plan announcement (PLAN_INTENT_RE) is
still continued.

* fix(terminal-guard): stop the tool-activity pass at a stalled plan announcement

A text-only plan announcement after the last tool activity means the turn
stalled there, so a following completion is continued again, matching
recentTurnHasToolActivity. Pin the boundary for next-step wording: first-person
plans still continue, while a summary that suggests a next step to the user
passes.

* fix(mistral): keep replayed images within each model's per-request cap (lidge-jun#8174)

Mistral rejects requests that carry more images than a model accepts,
counting the whole replayed history: most vision models refuse a ninth
image with HTTP 400, and DeepSeek V4.1 Flash answers an opaque HTTP 503
(code 3800) past 20. A screenshot-heavy session then fails on every turn.

For the first-party Mistral destination, messagesToChatFormat now keeps
the newest image_url parts within the model's cap and replaces older ones
with a text note naming the cap, in the outbound copy only. The cap is the
new modelCapabilities.<id>.mistralMaxImages axis: an operator declaration
over the measured rows on the mistral registry entry, else the documented 8.

* fix(openai-chat): flatten Claude gateway root tool schemas

Apply the supplied Claude Chat gateway compatibility patch to current dev.
Flatten root oneOf/anyOf/allOf by upstream model id while preserving nested
schemas and literal values. Keep existing Zen and Azure sanitization intact.

Cover root compositions, required fields, wire-model overrides, non-Claude
exclusion, nested schema preservation and input immutability. Register the
new suite in the existing providers layout shard and document the lossy
root normalization contract.

* fix(openai-chat): preserve Claude root reference arguments

Preserve own __proto__ argument names and resolve local root-branch ref
chains with a shared 64-dereference budget per tool schema. Keep nested
schemas and existing Zen/Azure handling unchanged. Preserve the original
composition for cyclic, missing, external, over-budget or nested-composition
references instead of emitting an incomplete flattened argument catalog.

Add regression coverage for local references, safety fallbacks, property
precedence and non-final Claude name segments. Clarify allOf required-field
promotion and reference limits in the public and architecture docs.
