test: bound Windows overflow slices and preserve child cleanup - #8229
Prevent Windows overflow matrix cases from exhausting their 30-second test deadline: run the eight measured slow Windows lanes in 16-row child slices, preserving ordered golden comparisons and all rows. Fast converter/collector lanes and non-Windows lanes retain 64 rows.
Join each owned child and its output before cleanup, and retain scratch when release cannot be established. The fixture observes asynchronous Bun.spawn children, including the Windows ACL verifier, before issuing its cleanup receipt; this is fixture-scoped evidence, not a general process-tree guarantee. The 30-second test, 480-second batch, and 30-minute job deadlines and CI triggers are unchanged.
Generate the seven previously missing Windows duration rows from completed primary file groups so the existing packer accounts for overflow work. Three rows are provisional censored observations: builtin 391,302 ms (job 127708835193, four case timeouts); native 290,644 ms (job 127730254061, one case timeout); translated 346,067 ms (job 127657289210, three case timeouts). They are not full successful workload timings and should be refreshed from a later valid primary run. The table header retains all seven row sources and earlier provenance.
Relationship to test: stabilize Windows fixture setup and source checks #8176: it also edits tests/helpers/messages-overflow-differential.ts (one spend-home lease per slice, row loop wrapped in try/finally) and messages-overflow-case.ts. The changes are complementary and git merge-tree against its head ec0c0b3124 merges without conflict; in the merged file the slice releases its spend home before this PR's background-work settle and spawn-tracker drain.
Verification
Rebased head a96a5f3e3a on macOS, Bun 1.4.4: bun test tests/claude-integration/messages-overflow-*.test.ts102 pass, 0 fail, 99,176 assertions in 67.3 s (includes the baseline contract); bun run typecheck passed for 2,323 files; structure:check and privacy:scan passed; file-size-ratchet, test-layout, and test-layout-tooling tests: 38 pass, 0 fail.
Rebased head a96a5f3e3a on Windows 11 MINI, Bun 1.4.4, temp homes, GITHUB_ACTIONS unset (slices active): the seven overflow files 266 pass, 0 fail, 0 skip, 849 s wall. All 249 slices finished under 30 s and none over 20 s; slowest was native-fold-builtin rows 1-16 at 9,047 ms, and every network-backed lane ran at 16 rows. Fast lanes stayed at 64 rows and under 0.8 s. A post-run snapshot found no leftover Bun/PowerShell child and no ocx-overflow-slice-* scratch (snapshot, not continuous tracing).
Earlier evidence, from the pre-rebase head d78c53ffdc:
Windows 11 MINI, Bun 1.4.4: bun run test:changed selected all six overflow matrix files and the baseline contract: 266 pass, 0 fail, 99,340 assertions, 377.54 s. bun run typecheck passed for 2,317 files; bun run privacy:scan passed.
Controlled timing ablation, not a reproduction of hosted load: a scratch preload imposed the same 500 ms per selected row before work. The original 64-row native-fold test timed out at 30.002 s; the changed 16-row test ran the same first 64 rows in four passing slices with 1,356 assertions. Hosted 64-row samples independently reached 27–30 s, with actual 30-second failures. Fast converter and collector samples were 628–703 ms per 64 rows and remain unchanged.
A separate controlled 16-row timeout reported its internal deadline at 25.740 s; the owned child PID was absent after the parent exited, and unverified scratch remained outside the parent test sandbox. The lifecycle tests cover real child exit, both pipes, early pipe failure, deadline races, unconfirmed reap and cleanup error preservation. A real child behind a simulated timed-out ACL verifier blocked the fixture spawn tracker until exit; ablating the tracker made both tracking tests fail.
Ran the actual Windows batch packer against the old and proposed tables, using a fake Bun test executor. Both assigned the 2,956-file inventory exactly once and each recorded fake-Bun invocation matched the packer's ordered batch arguments. The proposed table isolates builtin, native, translated and verdicts; it changes 532 batches to 539 and reassigns 2,730 files. Bound table and inventory hashes and job sources are recorded in the private verification artifacts.
Windows job limit is 30 minutes. Estimated shard test work is 1,424 s; observed setup in two prior jobs was 57–68 s, leaving 308–319 s nominally. Table weights redistribute existing work, but 16-row subprocess startup overhead is not in those weights and 25% test-time variance would exceed the limit. Hosted wall times are required before drawing a conclusion.
NOT RUN: full repository suite, due to shared-host cost; hosted platform proof will come from the requested exact-head branch dispatch. Local Linux/macOS behavior was not run.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Tests
Expanded coverage for message-overflow scenarios, including sandbox boundaries, output handling, timeouts, and cleanup after failures.
Added checks that fixture subprocesses and background tasks finish cleanly, including Windows-specific cases and ACL verification.
Test runs use smaller batches on Windows and bounded deadlines for child processes, with failures reported when cleanup or output draining is incomplete.
The overflow test helpers now manage scratch directories and bound child-process collection. Head differential runs track fixture subprocesses and confirm background work has drained. Overflow assertions use smaller slices for designated Windows lanes and check child exit and cleanup confirmation.
Changes: Overflow process lifecycle
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Scratch and child collection lifecycle tests/helpers/messages-overflow-child.ts, tests/claude-integration/messages-overflow-baseline-contract.test.ts
The helpers locate scratch space outside owned test-temp roots, remove it only when safe, and collect child exit and output results with deadline and cleanup handling. Tests cover scratch placement, successful collection, and collection or cleanup failures.
Fixture subprocess tracking and drain tests/helpers/messages-overflow-spawn-tracker.ts, tests/helpers/messages-overflow-differential.ts, tests/claude-integration/messages-overflow-baseline-contract.test.ts
The head differential run tracks spawned children, waits for background and ACL work, then drains and restores tracking. Tests cover pending child exits and an ACL verifier timeout.
Assertions use 16-row slices for Windows slow lanes and 64-row slices otherwise. Each child run uses isolated scratch and environment paths; Windows runs have a deadline. The assertions require successful exit and confirmation that fixture subprocesses drained before scratch cleanup.

Explanation
The title "test: bound Windows overflow slices and preserve child cleanup" matches the main changes in the changeset. The raw summary shows 16-row slices on Windows for slow lanes (bounding overflow slices), and helpers that collect child exit status and output, kill unobserved children, and retain scratch unless cleanup is safe (preserving child cleanup). The conventional-commit prefix "test:" fits the test-only files. The title is concise, specific, and within normal length. Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
When the reap interval expires, collectOverflowChild reports incomplete cleanup but leaves both Response.text() consumers running without cancelling their streams. A held output pipe can retain readers and native resources after collection has rejected.
The failed slice can leave pipe handles and pending output accumulation alive in the test worker, potentially delaying worker exit or consuming resources during later slices.
This can occur when: The direct child terminates, but a descendant retains an inherited stdout or stderr handle beyond the reap interval.

Assert that the collector waits for exit and output.
The deadline test awaits child.exited after the collector rejects, so it can pass if the collector rejects before joining.
Add a controlled child fixture that keeps exit and both streams pending after kill(). Assert that collection remains pending as each completes, then rejects with the deadline error when all three complete within the reap deadline.

Check that drain waits for child exit.

In tests/helpers/messages-overflow-differential.ts:128, an unsettled background task throws before spawnTracker.drain(). Fixture errors also bypass the drain. A tracked ACL child can still be active at either point, so the harness does not join it. The parent retains scratch on failure, but does not join that tracked child.

Hosted Windows runs skip the changed slow-lane checks.
On hosted Windows, hostedWindowsQuarantine is true, so the test.skipIf at tests/helpers/messages-overflow-assertions.ts:144 skips every slice of the eight WINDOWS_SLOW_LANES. The skipped body contains the 16-row child run, the 25-second Windows deadline, the exit check, the fixtureAsyncSpawnsDrained check, and the per-row assertRow comparisons. Only the registration-time partition and schema checks still run for those lanes. The PR cites hosted Windows proof from the exact-head dispatch as its verification path, so that proof does not cover the changed behavior for these lanes while the quarantine remains.
The quarantine is intentional (#8262). Its own comment ends it when a Windows lane=all run passes with the skip removed. Either:
Dispatch lane=all with the slow-lane skip removed, and treat that run as the exit check for the quarantine.
Or state in the PR description that the hosted proof excludes these eight lanes.
