Project actions and worktree setup/settle scripts are typed into an interactive terminal, so automated commands and setup completion wrappers clutter shell history.

Use one shared projectScriptTerminalInput helper at the server, web/desktop, and mobile project-script boundaries. It prefixes a space so Bash with HISTCONTROL=ignorespace/ignoreboth, zsh with HIST_IGNORE_SPACE, and fish can omit automated entries. Chat code-block commands keep their existing history behavior. Current main was merged and its terminal-actions API retained; contributor commits are preserved.

Credit to @otavio for the original fix in #13903, including the original Bash/zsh/fish PTY verification.

Verification

  • One existing setup/settle regression test before → one after in ProjectSetupScriptRunner.test.ts; direct writes and both completion wrappers require the leading space. It fails against main without the fix. No new test files.

  • 32 focused Vitest tests passed across the setup runner, web project scripts and script keybindings, and mobile terminal launch context.

  • Scoped shared, server, web, and mobile typechecks passed. Changed-file lint and formatting passed (three existing mobile lint warnings).

  • Fresh Linux Bash PTY proof used the actual helper and completion-wrapper implementation. Before: action and multiline setup wrapper were saved. After: both were absent, and a normally typed control command remained. Both commands executed successfully. Output, harness.

  • Two full-diff review rounds with Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol. Round one found chat code-block commands sharing the project runner; fixed their history behavior. Round two found no code blockers. The documented multiline limit remains open for human scope review in the Macroscope thread.

Browser proof

Same isolated project, action, Bash setting, and 1280×800 viewport; actual base 9077e818d8 and head 4f484f1e30. Click Run History check, type the control command, then flush and print HISTFILE. Both commands execute in each run; only the automated action disappears from saved history on head.

Before: action and typed control both saved.

Before: project action and typed control both appear in Bash history

After: typed control saved; project action absent.

After: only the typed control appears in Bash history

Limits

History suppression depends on shell configuration. PowerShell/PSReadLine does not honor this leading-space convention. For raw multiline client actions and unobserved server runs, only the first history entry is suppressed; later lines can still be saved. The observed server completion wrapper keeps its multiline body in one history entry. This is history hygiene, not a guarantee that scripts containing secrets cannot be retained.

Native macOS, Windows, iOS, Android, and Electron desktop execution were not verified on this headless Linux machine. The original author's zsh/fish checks above are attributed evidence, not a new native-platform run.

Tests: GPT-6 Astra; implementation: GPT-6.1 Sol; adversarial review: Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol; orchestrated through T3 Code with the Codex harness.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The patch is small and preserves command execution, but it changes the default shell-history policy for automated project scripts across server, web, and mobile. That product-facing behavior change warrants deliberate human review.

📝 Walkthrough

Project-script terminal input now uses a shared formatter that prefixes commands with a space and appends a carriage return. Mobile, web, and server callers use the formatter. Server test expectations include the added space.

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: juliusmarminge

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5e556

Windows users running setup scripts in PowerShell may still find those commands in shell history. The issue is limited to that path, but the history behavior should be addressed or clearly documented.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 5e556

The change is narrowly scoped to command formatting. Existing terminal permissions, execution targets and completion handling are preserved. History suppression depends on the shell and its settings; it is not a guarantee that commands or secrets cannot be recorded elsewhere.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed behavior reaches the existing project-script execution paths across three applications. Each invocation retains its selected terminal target and command authority; the inspected change does not add another environment, service or data-store target.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The mobile launcher requires terminal-operation scope, and its consumer rechecks scope and readiness before writing. Web checks the same environment-scoped permission before starting and again after terminal opening. The formatter replaces only the input-data expression, not these permission checks or target identities.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Mobile pending launches remain keyed by environment, thread and terminal and are removed when consumed. A per-target sent key prevents repeated initial writes. The existing consumer marks input sent before the asynchronous write and does not retry it here; that failure behavior predates this PR.

Project action commands and the worktree setup script, including its
completion sentinel wrapper, were typed into the terminal and ended up
in the shell history. Carry pingdotgg/t3code#13903, which prefixes them
with a space so zsh, bash and fish skip them. The runner test was
reworked on main, so the test expectation is adapted to the preview's
version of it.

Could you add the shell versions, history settings, and observed results for a project action and the multiline setup wrapper? The verification rule asks for evidence of the changed behavior. Current-head CI confirms the runner tests pass, but their changed assertions check the leading-space payload, not whether those commands are absent from shell history.

@juliusmarminge added below, and the same summary is now in the PR description.

Verification

I ran each shell interactively under node-pty, the PTY library the server's terminal uses. Each shell got an isolated HOME/ZDOTDIR/XDG_*, so no user rc files were loaded. For each shell I wrote the exact bytes the runner sends, once with the old ${command}\r payload and once with projectScriptTerminalInput:

  1. a project action: printf 'action-%s\n' ran
  2. the multiline setup wrapper: the posix or fish variant from wrapCommandForCompletion at this head, wrapping a two-line script
  3. a normal typed command (printf 'after-%s\n' marker) as a control

Then I printed the effective history settings and the in-session history (fc -ln 1 / history), exited, and read the saved history file. In every run, the action produced its output and the sentinel reported exit status 0.

Shell History setting Before (action / setup wrapper) This PR (action / setup wrapper)
zsh 5.9.2 setopt HIST_IGNORE_SPACE saved / saved absent / absent (in session and in .zsh_history)
zsh 5.9.2 option off n/a saved with a leading space (same as before)
bash 5.3.15 HISTCONTROL=ignorespace, cmdhist on saved / saved absent / absent (in history and .bash_history)
bash 5.3.15 HISTCONTROL=ignoreboth n/a absent / absent
bash 5.3.15 HISTCONTROL unset n/a saved with a leading space (same as before)
fish 4.9.3 defaults saved / saved absent / absent (in history and fish_history)

The control command was saved in every run.

Not checked: PowerShell/Windows, where the setup wrapper and actions get the same leading space but PSReadLine has no leading-space rule, so behavior is unchanged. I also didn't click through the web and mobile action buttons end to end; those call the same helper, as shown in the diff.

Commands typed into the terminal for project actions and the worktree
setup script were recorded in the user's shell history, including the
setup completion sentinel wrapper.

Prefix them with a space so zsh (HIST_IGNORE_SPACE), bash (ignorespace)
and fish skip them.

🟡 Minor · Handle PowerShell history separately. · ProjectSetupScriptRunner.ts:446

apps/server/src/project/ProjectSetupScriptRunner.ts:446
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Handle PowerShell history separately.

On Windows, ProjectSetupScriptRunner can use PowerShell. projectScriptTerminalInput only adds a leading space, which does not exclude the command from PSReadLine history. The setup command can therefore remain in session history and be persisted to the history file.

Use a PowerShell-compatible history exclusion mechanism, or document this limitation. Test both session and saved history on Windows.

Review comment at @apps/server/src/project/ProjectSetupScriptRunner.ts at line
446:
Update the PowerShell command handling in ProjectSetupScriptRunner so setup
commands are excluded from both PSReadLine session history and the saved history
file; projectScriptTerminalInput’s leading-space behavior is insufficient for
PowerShell. Use a PowerShell-compatible exclusion mechanism, or explicitly
document the limitation if exclusion cannot be supported.

aorwall added a commit to aorwall/t3code that referenced this pull request Oct 20, 2026
Merges upstream `pingdotgg/t3code` at `143ab1606d` (base `ab6be13d43`,
376 commits) into the fork. No merge PR was open, so this branches from
`main`.

## Merge

- **Landed:** 1177 files out of 1177 in the upstream range. The only
missing files are `apps/server/src/cli/pair.ts` and its test, which the
fork deliberately keeps deleted. The fork delta is now 817 files.
- **Conflicts:** 14, each resolved by its `preflight.mjs` verdict. The
tracker entry in `docs/fork/upstream-merge-log.md` covers each one. The
ones a reviewer should read:
- **`ProjectDefaultsSettings.tsx`:** upstream moved the
agent-browser-access row to `IntegrationsSettings.tsx`
(`AgentBrowserAccessSetting`). The fork's `workspaceOwnsProjectDefaults`
gate moved with it and returns null at a Workspace project scope.
- **`terminal.ts`:** keeps the fork's `TerminalMetadataState` seed and
takes upstream's `Stream.drop(1)`. Upstream's new `runtime.test.ts`
metadata test now reads `.terminals`.
- **`Sidebar.tsx` / `Sidebar.logic.ts`:** upstream's new
`resolveSidebarRowThreadId` resolves against the unfiltered shells. It
now takes `source`, because the fork's `isSidebarSubagentThread` hides
only provider-native subagents.
- **`ChatView.tsx` (auto-merged):** the fork's hosted script path calls
`storeSetActiveTerminal` again. The local path drops its early
`setTerminalOpen(true)`, following upstream pingdotgg#18340, so the drawer no
longer claims the default terminal id.
- **`AGENTS.md`:** keeps the fork's prose and adds upstream's new
`Effect.fn` rule.
- **`apps/mobile/package.json`:** takes upstream's test script and keeps
`tsc` rather than `tsc-rs`.
- **`pnpm-lock.yaml`:** `tsc-rs` entries stripped, then re-derived with
`install.mjs`.
- **Other fixes:**
- `fork/goToDefinition.test.ts` moved to browser mode for upstream's new
`no-dom-test-environment` lint rule.
- `ThreadDetailsPrRows.browser.test.tsx` now passes
`activeProjectScriptsEditable`.
- One new `duplicateAddExceptions` entry was added and one stale one
retired.
- **Unsupported methods:** ADD 0, DROP 0, KEEP 2.
`packages/contracts/src/rpc.ts` is unchanged.

## Verification

`verify.mjs --sequential`:
- duplicate-adds, tripwires, resolution-check, unsupported-methods,
lockfile, fmt, lint, typecheck and build all pass.
- `test` fails. The files that fail when run alone are the same five as
on 2026-10-19 (`AgentScope`, `OpenCodeServerLedger`, ssh `tunnel`,
`AcpAdapterV2`, `OrchestratorReplayFixtures`), all sandbox
process-reaping or auth issues.
- Two new failures are also environmental: the partial-clone tests in
`GitVcsDriver.test.ts` and `RepositoryIdentityResolver.test.ts`. The
sandbox's `~/.gitconfig` rewrites `git@github.com:` to https with
`insteadOf`.
- `@t3tools/web` had one real failure, upstream's new Sidebar subagent
test. It is fixed and passes on its own.

**Caveat:** the last amend changed only that test fixture and the docs.
The sandbox restarted three times during this run, and the typecheck and
fmt re-run after that amend did not finish. A follow-up comment will
report it.

## Usable as-is
- LaTeX/KaTeX math in chat markdown, behind the client setting
`mathRenderingEnabled` in Appearance, off by default (pingdotgg#18735).
- Mermaid renders while a message streams (pingdotgg#18308). Large changed-file
trees are virtualized (pingdotgg#21482, pingdotgg#21831). HTML previews skip the loading
skeleton (pingdotgg#21480).
- Pasted folders become workspace references (pingdotgg#22072). PR check rows
aligned, and skipped checks get a slash icon (pingdotgg#22090, pingdotgg#21498). A
confirmation before "Close with comment" (pingdotgg#18175).
- Subagent overflow badge (pingdotgg#19860). Context usage survives a fork
(pingdotgg#22075). Copy paths relative to the thread workspace (pingdotgg#21497). PDF
preview (pingdotgg#21095).
- Contract decoding tolerates newer PR shapes (`ForwardCompatibleArray`
/ `ForwardCompatibleOptional`; pingdotgg#19899, pingdotgg#21575, pingdotgg#21665).
- In-app browser search engine settings (pingdotgg#17688). These are client-only,
but they only matter where the browser panel is exposed.

## Unsupported in Moatless / needs implementation
- **`thread.stop` and `capabilities.threadStop` (pingdotgg#22052):** stops a
thread without resolving its run. The client falls back to the existing
stop path until the backend advertises `threadStop`. Added to the
capabilities gap.
- **`blocking: false` on async questions (pingdotgg#15430):** keeps a thread
Working while a question is open. The backend has to emit the field.
- **Provider `optionDescriptors` / `installedVersion` (pingdotgg#19519,
pingdotgg#19567):** drive dynamic model options and update checks. Both are
optional, so the client degrades.
- **Terminal `resume: true` on resubscribe (pingdotgg#18444):** the backend
should not reopen a closed shell.
- **`rootPath` on git diff/status results:** used for workspace-relative
paths.
- **`repositoryWebUrl` on PR links (pingdotgg#21575).**
- **Relay, T3 Connect, hosted sign-in and `t3 update` work:** not
applicable to the single-origin Moatless deployment.

## Backend behavior to consider reproducing in Moatless
- **Settlement:** an empty inactive thread auto-settles (pingdotgg#15783).
Settling clears snooze (pingdotgg#17547). An interrupted run does not start the
settle timer on a snoozed thread (pingdotgg#17789).
- **Runs:** auto-delivered messages queue between provider turns
(pingdotgg#15691). A message promoted into a stopping run stays queued (pingdotgg#16926).
Compaction cadence survives restarts (pingdotgg#21880).
- **ACP:** native foreground work settles independently, and child
routing moves between runs (pingdotgg#21614–pingdotgg#21616). Delegated children stop once
(pingdotgg#18826).
- **Terminals:** slow clients no longer queue unbounded output (pingdotgg#18429).
Shells do not inherit tmux (pingdotgg#13359). Script commands stay out of shell
history (pingdotgg#13903).
- **Files:** saves no longer follow a symlink out of the workspace
(pingdotgg#18819). This one is security-relevant.
- **Git:** new worktrees fetch the base branch's own tracked remote
(pingdotgg#21032). Rename and non-ASCII paths are kept in changed-file lists
(pingdotgg#20175). Rollback blocked by an index lock now says so (pingdotgg#11340).

The `docs/fork/gaps.md` entries "Capabilities are reported…" and
"Runtime fixes upstream made to its own server" are extended with these.
