Android loading indicators across the app use legacy circle-outline spinners; some also fall back to a teal color that ignores the selected theme. This PR replaces all 37 Android-reachable standalone indicator sites and the shared loading-button indicator with Expo's native, filled and morphing Material 3 LoadingIndicator.

The scope includes thread resume and connection status, project/worktree progress, media and file previews, settings, device previews, and loading actions. The shared button change covers repository lookup, adding a project, and cloning a project. Indicators use the selected theme accent unless their context specifies a color; existing compact/numeric sizes, styles, and accessibility are preserved, with a 48 dp container for full-screen loading. iOS keeps its existing indicator.

Scope and approval

This updates the existing Android loading UI across its call sites to use the native Material 3 indicator already supplied by Expo UI. The indicator migration and contextual theme handling serve that single Android visual consistency change; iOS retains its existing implementation. No prior maintainer approval of the app-wide replacement has been obtained. This is a visible default UI change, and Macroscope has declined automatic approval; explicit maintainer review of that scope is still required. The native recordings, theme comparisons, and call-site inventory below provide the concrete proposal for review.

Pixel 10 Pro, Android 15, 1080 × 2400, Material You dark. The first two pairs show complete app screens reached through normal navigation. Look above the composer for the thread reconnect indicator, and inside the button for repository lookup.

Motion: thread reconnect before · thread reconnect after · repository lookup after · resume before · resume after.

Capture setup: the thread contains seeded demo content in a disposable environment; stopping its backend triggers the real reconnect state. Repository lookup uses the actual Add Project screen with its request temporarily delayed to hold the loading state. Before/after captures switch only the indicator implementation. Some stills are frames from the corresponding recordings. The transient resume screen is the actual LoadingScreen held visible by a fixture. Capture helpers, delays, and evidence are absent from the PR branch.

The full inventory is a labelled native gallery of original call-site props, not a screenshot of every complete containing screen. It includes an iOS-only submit indicator for completeness. Native pull-to-refresh controls (11 sites) and the image-viewing dependency's white loader remain unchanged.

Verification

  • Bot comment audit on unchanged 856aa1904d: the exported withUniwind wrapper resolves colorClassName to the color prop before invoking the Android component, so contextual color is not discarded. Pixel 10 Pro, Android 15 native fixture confirmed danger #ff6467, muted #818181, and explicit #00ff00 overriding the danger class. Native color evidence. The temporary fixture is absent from this branch.

  • Android emulator: actual thread navigation and reconnect status, repository lookup's loading button, native MD3 shape morphing, Material You light/dark and Ember, explicit white/muted colors, small/large/numeric sizes, and scaled worktree indicators.

  • Actual notification tapping was not exercised; resume evidence uses the real loading component held in a fixture.

  • Worktree header sizing: the Android indicator now uses a native 12 dp size to match its layout box; iOS retains its existing scale. Checked the actual component in the emulator fixture: before sizing correction / after sizing correction.

  • Mobile typecheck passes.

  • Focused mobile tests: 10 pass across dependency-graph.test.ts, thread-route-hydration.test.ts, and materialYouTheme.test.ts.

  • Scoped formatting/lint and git diff --check pass. Lint reports existing React compiler warnings in migrated consumers.

  • Android-only rendering change; no provider, contract, server, web, desktop, or transport changes. iOS passthrough reviewed; no iOS runtime pass.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR replaces React Native spinners with a Jetpack Compose MD3 implementation across many production Android loading states, including sizing and layout changes. The shared native rendering path changes the product’s default loading UI across multiple screens and warrants explicit validation.

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The shared dependency broadens the propagation of Android rendering behavior across mobile loading views, rather than expanding privileged reachability. Representative archive, cloud, project, and task changes leave operation callbacks and environment identity outside the indicator.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing cloud sign-in and discovery-selection branches are unchanged by the replacement. Android project actions still delegate to MaterialButton, which disables native interaction and rejects accessibility activation while disabled or loading. The new rendering path does not bypass these controls.

Set the header indicator size through AppActivityIndicator.

On Android, size="small" creates a 20 dp inner box. The header sets the outer view to 12 dp, so the indicator can extend beyond its layout box. The scale transform changes the rendered size but not the layout size.

🐛 Suggested fix
-                size="small"
+                size={12}
                 colorClassName="accent-icon-muted"
-                style={{ width: 12, height: 12, transform: [{ scale: 0.65 }] }}
+                style={{ width: 12, height: 12 }}

The stage-row indicator does not have the same issue because its outer view sizes to the 20 dp inner box.

The diff consistently replaces Android loading indicators while preserving the iOS implementation, but fixing theme colors and choosing a new filled, morphing appearance are different decisions. Maintainers: is the app-wide Material 3 replacement the intended direction, or should this be limited to correcting the existing indicators’ theme behavior? Please establish that scope under prior approval. Leaving this open for that decision; I also couldn’t inspect the supplied release-hosted media because that artifact route is blocked, which I’m not treating as missing contributor evidence.

Resolve colorClassName in the Android indicator.

When an Android caller supplies colorClassName, AppActivityIndicator.android.tsx ignores it and resolves only text-primary. Callers using accent-icon or accent-icon-muted can therefore render with the primary color instead of their contextual color.

@coderabbitai The colorClassName warning on 0223dfde2d is a false positive, as in the previously resolved thread.

AppActivityIndicator is exported through withUniwind(AndroidActivityIndicator). I checked the installed Uniwind native wrapper after the SDK 58 update: its automatic mapping recognizes colorClassName, resolves the class's styles.accentColor, and passes that value as the color prop before calling AndroidActivityIndicator. It also preserves an explicit color prop and subscribes to theme dependencies. The inner component uses that resolved color, with text-primary only as the fallback.

The suggested change would read .color from accent-icon / accent-icon-muted, although those utilities resolve to .accentColor. No code change is needed. Please dismiss this repeated finding.

@PixPMusic, you’re right. I withdraw the repeated colorClassName finding on 0223dfde2d. No code change is needed.

withUniwind(AndroidActivityIndicator) resolves colorClassName through styles.accentColor and passes the result as color. The component uses that value before the text-primary fallback. Reading .color from accent-icon or accent-icon-muted would be incorrect.

Thanks for the clarification. The earlier review thread is already resolved.

@coderabbitai I checked both outside-diff comments against current head 856aa1904d.

The worktree header sizing issue is already fixed: Android passes numeric size={12} and removes the scale transform; iOS retains its old behavior.

The colorClassName finding is a false positive. The exported component is withUniwind(AndroidActivityIndicator). In the pinned Uniwind 1.12.1 implementation, the wrapper recognizes colorClassName, resolves its accentColor, and supplies the generated color prop before invoking AndroidActivityIndicator. An explicit color prop takes precedence. Therefore destructuring the original class prop as unused does not discard its color, and color ?? primaryColor already uses the contextual color.

I verified the unchanged exported component on Pixel 10 Pro / Android 15: danger class renders #ff6467, muted class renders #818181, and explicit #00ff00 overrides the danger class. Native evidence. No component change or fixture is included in the PR.

The missing Scope and approval section is now present, and explicitly records that the app-wide visual replacement still needs maintainer review. Docstring coverage is disabled by the current repository CodeRabbit config; I have not added redundant component comments to satisfy the old warning.

@PixPMusic, thanks for the clarification. I checked current head 856aa1904d and the effective CodeRabbit configuration.

  • Worktree header sizing: Confirmed fixed. Android uses numeric size={12} without a scale transform. iOS retains its existing behavior.
  • colorClassName: I withdraw the repeated finding. The export uses withUniwind(AndroidActivityIndicator), and the component passes color ?? primaryColor to LoadingIndicator. Your wrapper explanation matches the existing learning from the resolved thread, which I used here. No component change or additional fixture is needed for this finding.
  • Scope and approval: Confirmed that the section is present. It explicitly states that maintainer review of the app-wide visual replacement remains required.
  • Docstring coverage: Confirmed that reviews.pre_merge_checks.docstrings.mode is off. The old coverage warning no longer applies. No redundant component comments are needed.
