Copy Image silently failed inside sandboxed HTML previews because Electron only hit-tested the main frame.

Load the selected image's URL for subframe copies and write the decoded image to the clipboard. Main-frame images keep native copying; missing or closed frames leave the clipboard alone. Chromium decodes formats nativeImage cannot read, including WebP and GIF. The fallback supports HTTP(S) and data URLs, omits credentials, rejects redirects, and limits downloads and clipboard PNGs to 32 MiB. It checks dimensions before decoding, with a limit of 8,388,608 pixels, and times out downloads after 10 seconds.

Verified with 113 focused tests, desktop typecheck, targeted lint and format checks, and Electron 44.4.5 under Xvfb. Native checks covered main-frame images, same-origin and cross-origin sandboxed frames, inline data images, WebP, and large and animated GIFs. macOS and Windows were not tested.

Closes #17549

Built with GPT-6.1 Sol in the Codex harness through T3 Code.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This adds a new desktop workflow for copying images from HTML subframes, including network fetching, format decoding, isolated renderer execution, resource limits, and clipboard writes. The behavior is contained and tested, but the new production capability and implementation complexity warrant human review.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The desktop Copy Image action now uses a frame-aware helper. The helper retains native copying for main-frame images and fetches, validates, decodes, and copies supported images from other frames.

Changes

Context-menu image copying

Layer / File(s) Summary
Frame-aware image copy and validation
apps/desktop/src/window/ContextMenuImage.ts, apps/desktop/src/window/ContextMenuImage.test.ts, apps/desktop/src/preview/FaviconCapture.ts, apps/desktop/src/preview/FaviconCapture.test.ts
copyContextMenuImage uses native copying for main-frame images. For other frames, it accepts credential-free HTTP(S) and bounded data URLs, rejects redirects, applies size and timeout limits, fetches and decodes the image, and writes PNG data when the contents and frame remain alive. Dimension parsing accepts a configurable pixel limit. Tests cover supported and rejected URLs, size limits, decode fallback, and frame closure during a request.
Context-menu action integration
apps/desktop/src/window/DesktopWindow.ts, apps/desktop/src/window/DesktopWindow.test.ts
The Copy Image action calls copyContextMenuImage and logs a warning if copying fails. The context-menu test supplies and retains the main frame.

Merge Risk

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 90531

The Copy Image change is mergeable after normal checks; no concrete remaining issue warrants blocking it.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 90531

The new copy path has strong download and image-size limits, but its requests are not tied to the originating preview's network context. Delayed copies can also overwrite a newer clipboard selection. Both risks require user interaction and are limited to the user's desktop.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: A user-selected subframe image URL now causes a fresh desktop HTTP(S) request without binding it to the originating contents session or enforcing a destination policy. Attacker-controlled URLs can therefore target reachable loopback or private-network services, subject to runtime egress behavior, potentially bypassing restrictions on the original renderer request. Credentials and redirects are restricted, but response and image validation happen after the request is sent.
  • Low · reliability · inferred: Overlapping copy operations have no shared ordering or cancellation guard. If an earlier subframe request finishes after a newer copy, it can overwrite the newer system clipboard selection while both frames remain alive. A source host can influence this ordering through response delay. This is an introduced clipboard-integrity and state-ownership gap; destruction checks do not prevent it.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The independently attackable scope is the user's desktop network reachability and system clipboard. Exploitation requires control of an image URL and a user Copy Image action. The helper exposes a GET-style request without attacker-selected headers or body, and successful output is restricted to a bounded PNG. Broader service, tenant, credential, or data-store compromise is not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An attacker-controlled subframe can supply an HTTP(S) image address targeting a local or private service. Selecting Copy Image emits the desktop request before image validity is established, so invalid-image rejection does not undo request-side effects. Whether this bypasses an effective browser restriction or reaches a vulnerable service remains unverified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The helper permits only HTTP(S) and data URLs, rejects URL credentials, omits fetch credentials, rejects redirects, and applies a ten-second request timeout. Download and PNG output are capped at 32 MiB, with an 8,388,608-pixel check before decoding and an additional bitmap check in the Chromium fallback.
  • observed — Cross-origin desktop fetching predates this PR through favicon capture, which uses the originating WebContents session and omits credentials for cross-origin candidates. Its managed-preview caller requires an HTTP(S) page URL. The new copy helper instead uses Electron.net.fetch and is wired into application subframes as well as guests and popups.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Failed or oversized responses are canceled, stream locks are released, and fallback bitmaps are closed. Contents and frame destruction are checked before work, before decoding, and before clipboard mutation. Tests exercise frame closure during fetch and decoding. These controls contain ordinary failures but do not establish navigation-generation identity or ordering between overlapping copy actions.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define the intended network authority for desktop image copies and enforce it before fetching, including session binding and an explicit decision on local/private destinations while preserving supported cross-origin copying.
  • proposed — Give asynchronous clipboard operations explicit ownership and supersession semantics so older work cannot overwrite a newer copy. If navigation invalidates that ownership, bind cancellation to document generation rather than relying only on frame destruction.
