🤖 Claude Opus 5.5 on behalf of Oliver

Problem

Chips in mobile chat messages drifted from desktop when #16979 moved messages to the Enriched markdown renderer. Their icons were swapped for unrelated file-type logos: a skill showed the MCP logo, an element showed React, a terminal showed bash, a PR showed git. Each kind's accent color was lost too: skills used a generic token color and file links had none. Thread context chips looked like files, and unknown context looked like a normal file.

Fix

Message chips now share desktop's per-kind colors and glyphs through Enriched's existing pill support. No native changes.

  • One presentation table. composerChipPresentation.ts now gives each kind its accent, the composer's symbol, and web's glyph. PR chips get web's open/draft/merged/closed glyphs. Thread context gets its own teal accent (web's oklch(0.62 0.12 190)) and web's MessagesSquare glyph. Unknown kinds and contexts a message no longer carries render as a neutral chip with web's CircleDashed glyph. Inline $skill chips and file links use the same table.
  • Text-only message chips. At Oliver's request, mobile message chips have no fill or border. Label and icon use the kind's full accent color, which keeps them distinct from body text. Web mixes only 22% of the accent into chip text, but that relies on the tinted pill behind it, and without the pill the mix was too close to body text. Labels keep the medium weight. Desktop and the mobile composer keep their filled, bordered pills.
  • Web's exact glyphs. scripts/sync-context-chip-icons.mjs (vp run sync:chip-icons) renders web's own lucide-react icons and SKILL_CHIP_ICON_SVG to white PNGs, which are tinted at runtime. File and mention chips keep their Pierre file-type icons, as on web.
    • Why PNGs: Enriched draws pills natively and its iconUri only accepts an image file or URL, so it can't take a React icon or an SVG.
    • Precedent: this copies how the file-type icons in the same pills are made. scripts/sync-pierre-file-icons.mjs (vp run sync:pierre-icons, added in feat(mobile): replace custom Markdown rendering with Enriched #16979) renders Pierre's SVG sprite to 64px PNGs in assets/file-icons and writes markdownFileIcons.generated.ts. The chip icons use the same 64px PNG + generated-module layout, in assets/context-chip-icons and contextChipIcons.generated.ts.
    • Alternative not taken: the composer draws SF Symbols on iOS and Lucide paths in Kotlin on Android. Reusing those in message chips would need a symbol icon source in our Enriched fork, plus a repack and native rebuild.
  • Line refs at body size. Inline code that names a file (`src/math.ts:2`) used to become a pill through Enriched's inline-code link recognition, which kept the code run's font: tiny on iOS and a condensed code face on Android. markdownWithInlineFileLinks now rewrites those code spans into ordinary markdown links before rendering, so they look and behave exactly like file links (math.ts · L2). Other inline code (commands, identifiers, URLs) stays code.
  • Small reuses. Attachment chips show their size (picker-demo.mp4 · 234 KB), as the composer and web do. File line references use web's label (math.ts · L2). The unused skillTextColor style field is gone.

Before / after

Every chip kind from one fixture thread, in a user bubble and in an assistant message:

iOS dark, before and after

Android dark, before and after

Light mode, before and after

Desktop vs mobile

The same fixture thread on desktop (web client at 1440px) next to the mobile "after" captures. Text is scaled to the same size in each column.

Dark user bubble: desktop, iOS, Android

Dark assistant message: desktop, iOS, Android

Light user bubble: desktop, iOS, Android

Visible differences that remain:

  • Desktop chips are filled, bordered pills. Mobile message chips are accent-colored text with a matching icon.
  • The unknown chip has a dashed outline on desktop. On mobile it has no outline, so only its CircleDashed icon sets it apart from body text.
  • Attachment sizes are smaller and muted on desktop (picker-demo.mp4 234 KB). Mobile shows them at label size after a ·.
  • The thread context chip shows the thread's live title on desktop and the saved title on mobile (see Known gaps).
  • In assistant text, thread and external links have favicons on desktop and are plain links on mobile.

Validation

  • Unit tests for the presentation table (per-kind and per-PR-state glyphs, thread, unknown and unavailable kinds, file icon and size label) and for rewriting file-naming inline code into links.
  • tsc --noEmit for apps/mobile, lint and format on the changed files.
  • Checked in the iOS simulator and the Android emulator against an isolated dev server, in dark and light mode. Tapping a line ref opens the file viewer; long-pressing it shows the file menu on both platforms.

Known gaps and follow-ups (not in this PR)

  • Thread context chips show the title saved with the record, not the thread's live title.
  • Behavior differences between mobile and web: tapping a PR chip opens a sheet instead of the PR, citations render as blockquotes, plain links have no favicons, image chips have no thumbnails, and web skill chips have no click or menu.

Related, not stacked: #22120 (skill chips in messages open their instructions) and #22153 (thread links long-press menu). Both touch ThreadFeed.tsx in different spots than this PR.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 57eaf5e

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused mobile rendering/parity fix covering context-chip visuals, file-link labels, and inline file references, with targeted tests and generated assets. An unresolved High-severity comment raises a concrete markdown-path preservation risk; the head includes the reported escaping follow-up and regression coverage, but the finding remains subject to the repository’s blocking-severity policy.

Notes:

  • This verdict was updated automatically after the outstanding correctness findings were resolved. Macroscope did not re-review the code.

📝 Walkthrough

Mobile context links now use structured chip presentation data, icons, accents, and native Markdown styling. The change adds icon asset generation and inline file-link conversion, updates file-link labels, and removes skill-specific Markdown text colors.

Changes: Mobile context chips

Layer / File(s) Summary
Generate chip icon assets
apps/mobile/package.json, apps/mobile/scripts/sync-context-chip-icons.mjs
A package script generates 64×64 PNG icons and a sorted React Native icon-source module.
Define chip presentation and file-link metadata
apps/mobile/src/lib/composerChipPresentation.*, apps/mobile/src/lib/enrichedLinkPresentation.*, apps/mobile/src/lib/markdownLinks.*, apps/mobile/src/lib/markdownDocument.ts, apps/mobile/src/lib/*test.ts
Chip presentations now include typed icons, pull-request state icons, and an unavailable fallback. Enriched links use structured icons and accents. File-link labels use the shared format. Inline file references can become Markdown links.
Render and wire context chips
apps/mobile/src/native/*, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadFeed.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/files/FileMarkdownPreview.tsx
Markdown customization supports chip accents and icon tinting. Native link variants apply chip styling. ThreadFeed uses context-link customization without skill-specific text colors.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 57eaf

The inspected changes are ready to merge after normal checks; no actionable issue remains.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 57eaf

The inspected changes keep chip appearance separate from link actions and preserve existing context lookup and navigation behavior. No introduced security bypass was established. Some uncertainty remains around native rendering of the rewritten file links.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is mobile rendering and existing user-triggered navigation from message content. Chip customization adds no destination, callback, permission, or execution capability. This does not establish authorization guarantees for downstream file or thread services.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — No introduced control bypass was established through the changed customization interfaces. Their styling fields are consumed separately from the unchanged context lookup and link-action handlers. Remaining native parsing uncertainty is a coverage limitation, not an observed attack path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new preprocessing boundary restricts conversion to matching inline-code nodes, does not descend into existing links, escapes backslashes, brackets, and ampersands, and rejects angle brackets. The recognition expression excludes scheme URLs. Supplied tests assert destination preservation for line suffixes and representative escaped characters, but do not establish native-renderer equivalence.
