Second-pass test prune for apps/desktop/**, including scripts/*.test.mjs and gnome-extension/*.test.js, using the reviewed inventory (desktop.tsv: 2 prune, 58 trim, 43 keep).

Counts

  • Files deleted: 2 (src/ipc/DesktopIpc.test.ts, src/ssh/DesktopSshEnvironment.test.ts)
  • Test declarations: 781 before (inventory count) → 695 after (86 removed: 2 with the deleted files, 84 trimmed)
  • .each rows thinned: 10 (GNOME setup state 8→4, keeping the GNOME 51 row; Hyprland color-manager versions 5→2, keeping the 0.48.0 and 0.50.1 range bounds; long text outside the scroll view 5→3; client-settings decode failures 3→2)
  • Product code: no behavior changes. One commit removes export from 6 symbols that only the pruned tests imported (resolveMac* ×3, makeDesktopContentSecurityPolicy, MAX_REMOTE_UPDATE_CHECKS, isSameOriginRendererNavigation) plus the unused parseTailscaleMagicDnsName re-export, so knip stays clean. knip --workspace apps/desktop --exports passes.

What was removed

  • Constant/literal mirrors: macOS Info.plist usage strings, codesign argv, launcher icon paths, the CSP directive list, webview-preference whitespace/nodeIntegration literals, the full Tailscale endpoint object.
  • Mocked call-sequence mirrors: Windows foreground AttachThreadInput call orders, the mac permission helper drag/Finder forward, the native config picker forward, the browser-import partition forward, the libsecret argv, the telemetry stream forward.
  • Error tag / message wording: catalog store read error, saved-environment decode errors (×3), backend output-handler error fields, server-exposure typed error, browser-session clear error, updater channel/settings error context, SSH prompt delivery failure.
  • Sibling variants: Safari binarycookies corruption variants (one bounds rejection per class kept), Chromium leading-dot and long-value cookies, the v10-fallback key case, GIF/JPEG favicon siblings, KDL whitespace/comment variants, the extra capture-config expiry/include/conflict cases, the DesktopSnapShot permission mock-count and happy-path wiring cases.

Kept against the inventory

Kept because their adding commit is a fix(...) (regression rule): electron-launcher "repairs Electron before loading the package entrypoint" (#3662), EarlyElectronStartup unreadable-scale fallback (#14421), both LinuxUrlHandler cases (#5054, #8673), the PreReadyPlatform Hyprland table (#18566), the preview screenshot-diagnostic table (#17244), the window.ts telemetry opt-out (#14413), both legacyLocalStorageMerge cases (#15072), both linuxSecretStorage cases (#2916), ElectronWindow destroy failures (#6562), Sources Network/ discovery (#9516), the FaviconCapture GIF pixel limit and all three ContextMenuImage cases (#17555), the GuestInput accelerators (#18556), the Manager stroked-capture table (#18441), recording warmup (#8839), and the state-listener isolation cases (#3435), DesktopAppSettings window bounds (#3851), the Hyprland Lua-callback conflict (#10658), three DesktopUpdates cases (#18864, #19291), releaseNotes latest channel (#11753), both updateMachine cases (#6269), and the DesktopWindow popup-focus reload (#16961).

Kept by judgment:

  • ipc/methods/snapShot.test.ts "allows capture setup only from the trusted main renderer": the inventory calls it a duplicate trust gate, but it gates a different IPC handler (setupSnapShot) than the config read/write case.
  • snapShot.test.ts "waits for a delayed blur after hiding the window": it is the only caller of hideAndWaitForBlur. Deleting it would leave dead product code that knip flags, and removing that code is outside a test prune.
  • Client-settings decode table: thinned to 2 rows rather than deleted. It is what proves a malformed settings file is not overwritten.

Regression notes added where the title does not name the bug: GuestInput (#18556), DesktopUpdates "does not flag an install that applied" (#19291), releaseNotes (#11753), Manager stroked captures (#18441).

Verification

  • vp test run on all 49 modified test files in apps/desktop: 48 passed, 1 skipped (505 cases: 489 passed, 16 skipped). The skips are Linux-only D-Bus tests running on macOS.
  • apps/desktop typecheck is clean. vp lint --no-ignore apps/desktop shows only a warning that was already there (Manager.test.ts no-extraneous-class). knip exports for apps/desktop are clean.

Delete two wiring-only suites: DesktopIpc forwarding the sender object to a
handler, and a DesktopSshEnvironment layer smoke test whose ssh config and
known_hosts parsing is owned and tested by the ssh package.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Remove cases that only mirror constants or mocked call sequences, assert
error tags and message wording, or duplicate a sibling with a different
literal. Thin lookup-style .each tables (GNOME setup state, Hyprland
versions, long-text platforms, client-settings decode failures) to
representative rows. Tests added by fix commits stay, with a
regression note where the title does not name the bug.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Knip flags these exports once their last test importer is gone. Each is
still used inside its own module, so dropping the export keyword is the
whole change.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR primarily removes low-value desktop tests and narrows internal helper exports without changing product behavior or defaults. Human review is still required because it modifies permission-related code and authentication-related test coverage.

📝 Walkthrough

This PR removes or narrows selected desktop tests across the application. It also makes several functions and constants module-local, removes a Tailscale parser re-export, and adds comments that document regression issues.

Changes: Desktop test and API surface changes

Layer / File(s) Summary
Startup, launcher, and preload checks
apps/desktop/gnome-extension/*, apps/desktop/scripts/*, apps/desktop/src/app/*
Removes launcher and preload tests, plus selected tests for activation, catalog errors, startup platform behavior, observability, profile migration, and web links.
Backend, Electron, and IPC checks
apps/desktop/src/backend/*, apps/desktop/src/electron/*, apps/desktop/src/ipc/*, apps/desktop/src/permissions/*
Removes selected backend, Electron, IPC, and macOS permission tests. The CSP function and Tailscale MagicDNS parser re-export are no longer public.
Preview and browser-import checks
apps/desktop/src/preview/*

Retain coverage for the registered object-src policy.

The current registered-policy test checks script-src, but it does not check object-src. A removal of object-src from makeDesktopContentSecurityPolicy would therefore pass the remaining ElectronProtocol tests. Add the assertion to the existing registration-path test.

Restore direct coverage for the Mac permission helper IPC guard.

MacPermissionHelper rejects messages from any renderer other than its own, before handling drag or finder. The deleted test was the only test that emitted MAC_PERMISSION_HELPER_CHANNEL and exercised this guard. Restore focused coverage for both untrusted actions and the trusted actions. Without it, a future guard regression could enable unauthorized OS actions without a test failure. This does not indicate a current production bypass.

Re CodeRabbit's two nitpicks: not adding them back. The CSP is a single string built in one place; the remaining registration test proves the header is emitted, and per-directive asserts are exactly the mirror-the-constant tests this pass removed. Same for the Mac permission helper.
