Mermaid diagrams in chat, file previews, plans, and PR descriptions rendered with mermaid.js. It is a 1.6 MB renderer that draws diagrams one at a time through a serial queue and re-renders every diagram on a theme change.

This swaps it for pele, a zero-dependency Mermaid renderer:

  • MermaidDiagram loads pele/lazy, which fetches one chunk per diagram type, then calls mount() on the diagram's container. autoDirection: false keeps each diagram in the direction it was written, so a wide flowchart LR scales down to fit the column like before instead of turning vertical.
  • Colors come from --pele-* variables mapped to the app theme tokens in index.css. A theme change recolors diagrams with no re-render. The expand-to-image path copies the resolved values onto the standalone SVG.
  • $$...$$ labels are typeset with the KaTeX the chat already uses for math, through pele's math resolver. KaTeX loads only for diagrams that contain $$. Its MathML passes the same KaTeX tag and attribute allowlist that fix(web): show math labels in Mermaid diagrams #16198 added.
  • Links and images are off, and the SVG still passes through DOMPurify before insertion.
  • Error UI, retry for a failed chunk load, show-code toggle, find-in-page, and expand are unchanged.

Benchmark

Production builds of main (2893437f26) and this branch, served side by side on one machine. Real app path: a project file with 14 diagrams (flowchart, 40-node flowchart, sequence, class, state, ER, gantt, pie, mindmap, git graph, journey, timeline, quadrant, XY) opened in the file preview, which renders through ChatMarkdown like chat messages. Headless Chromium at 1280x800, 10 interleaved rounds per side. Each round reloads the page, switches to dark and back, then shows code and the diagram again 5 times. Theme switches go through the app's appearance setting. Bundle numbers come from the same builds.

main (mermaid 11.17) this PR (pele 1.8) change
Reload until all 14 diagrams are drawn, median 1574 ms 755 ms -52%
Reload until the first diagram is drawn, median 944 ms 755 ms -20%
Time from first to last diagram drawn, median 628 ms 0 ms (same frame)
First switch to dark mode 685 ms re-rendering, 484 ms long tasks 0 diagram DOM changes, 26 ms long tasks
JS fetched to draw the first flowchart, gzip 201 KB (27 chunks) 60 KB (13 chunks) -70%
Total web app JS, gzip 7.18 MB 6.60 MB -0.58 MB
Show code, then show diagram again, until the click's task ends, median of 50 13.4 ms 13.6 ms +0.2 ms

Benchmark chart: per-run reload timeline, bundle size, dark mode switch, and show-diagram cost

Limits: Mermaid caches each diagram per theme, so only its first switch to a theme pays the 685 ms. Later switches cost about 80 ms. After "Show code", Mermaid reuses that cache and puts the SVG in the page after 4.8 ms, while pele lays the diagram out again and takes 10.8 ms. Both finish the click's task at about the same time. The 26 ms of long tasks on pele's dark switch are the app restyling itself; no diagram changes.

Before / after

Wide flowchart LR in the file preview. Both keep it left to right and scale it to the column.

Before: mermaid flowchart LR scaled to the column width

After: pele flowchart LR kept left to right and scaled to the column width

Sequence diagram, light theme.

Before: mermaid sequence diagram with default purple theme

After: pele sequence diagram in app theme colors

Pie and mindmap, dark theme.

Before: mermaid dark pie chart with near-black slices

After: pele dark pie chart and mindmap

Math labels from #16198's example, light and dark. Main renders these with Mermaid's KaTeX.

After: sequence and flowchart with typeset math labels, light theme

After: the same math labels in the dark theme

Syntax error, unknown diagram type, and a diagram with a javascript: click link, which renders without a link.

After: two error states and a diagram with its link stripped

Light to dark to light, main then this PR. Mermaid's dark renders were already cached in this clip, so it shows the cached swap, not the 685 ms first render.

Before: theme switch with mermaid

After: theme switch with pele

Behavior changes

  • MermaidDiagram.browser.test.tsx is removed. It tested the exported Mermaid sanitizer, which no longer exists.
  • Mermaid theme / themeVariables directives are ignored. Diagrams always follow the app theme.
  • Pele uses its own layout, so node positions differ from Mermaid's.

pele@1.8.0 is added to minimumReleaseAgeExclude because it was released on 2026-10-20 and adds the math option.

Web and desktop are covered. Mobile does not render Mermaid.

Verification

  • Typecheck, lint, and fmt for apps/web, plus ChatMarkdown.browser.test.tsx, MessagesTimeline.browser.test.tsx, and markdown-clipboard.test.ts (207 passed), on a Blacksmith testbox.
  • In a production build: all 14 diagram types render in light and dark, theme switches recolor in place, math labels typeset in light, dark, and the expanded image, copying a diagram copies its Mermaid source, the error states show source and message, and expand opens a themed image.
  • Pele 1.8 renders the 15 benchmark diagrams byte-identical to 1.6, so the screenshots above still match.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code using claude-opus-5-5

Pele draws Mermaid source to SVG synchronously and lazy-loads one chunk per
diagram type. Diagrams read their colors from CSS variables mapped to the app
theme, so theme changes recolor them without re-rendering, and narrow
containers get a reflowed layout instead of a scaled-down one.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This replaces the shared production Mermaid rendering path with Pele, changing diagram layout, theming, directive handling, sanitization, lazy loading, math labels, and expanded-image generation across existing user-facing views. The scope and visible behavior change are substantial enough to warrant human review.

📝 Walkthrough

The web app replaces Mermaid with Pele to render diagrams. The component loads Pele’s core and diagram-type chunks, sanitizes rendered SVG, reports load and render errors, and creates expanded images from rendered diagrams. Pele theme variables map to the app’s semantic color tokens.

Changes: Diagram rendering

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pele loading and theme integration
apps/web/package.json, pnpm-workspace.yaml, apps/web/src/components/chat/MermaidDiagram.tsx, apps/web/src/components/ChatMarkdown.tsx, apps/web/src/index.css
The app replaces the mermaid dependency with pele. The component loads Pele’s core and detected diagram-type chunks. The caller no longer passes a theme prop, and CSS defines Pele theme variables.
SVG sanitization and renderer mounting
apps/web/src/components/chat/MermaidDiagram.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/MermaidDiagram.browser.test.tsx
The component replaces the exported Mermaid sanitizer with internal SVG sanitizers and mounts Pele with links, images, and zoom disabled. The deleted browser tests covered SVG sanitization and MathML handling.
Render errors and diagram expansion
apps/web/src/components/chat/MermaidDiagram.tsx
The component displays load and render errors, retries failed loads by clearing cached failures, and expands a cloned SVG with inherited Pele color variables.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 27aeb

Diagrams now render with Pele instead of Mermaid. Pele drops remote url() styling values from diagram source before they reach the page, and style blocks are stripped. No concrete defect remains open, so the change is ready to merge after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 27aeb

The replacement changes security-sensitive rendering behavior, but the inspected implementation sanitizes generated SVG before insertion and restricts active content. No new exploitable path was established. Browser-level behavior and coverage of every renderer output path remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — An attacker able to supply diagram-bearing content that another user views can reach this browser rendering boundary. A boundary failure could therefore affect the viewing user's application context. The inspected path does not establish backend privilege gain, cross-tenant access, or propagation beyond affected viewers.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supplied remote-CSS disclosure candidate remains deferred, not verified. Compared with base, head removes CSS URL rewriting while leaving style attributes outside its explicit forbid list. Counterevidence is substantial: the inspected Pele CSS helper permits selected properties and rejects values containing URL functions, expression functions, javascript schemes, CSS escapes, imports, and image-set. This narrows the candidate but is not exhaustive proof for every emitted style path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The actual Pele lazy entrypoint exports the inspected mount implementation. Its SVG insertion helper calls replaceChildren with the sanitizer's returned node, so sanitization completes before that SVG is connected. Its error display uses textContent. This resolves the specific insertion-order uncertainty for the inspected 1.8.0 mount path.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Successful mounts are owned by a component-local container and destroyed on effect cleanup. The inspected dependency disconnects resize observation, disables refresh after destruction, and removes pending font-refresh dispatch ownership. Failed core or type loads can clear their cached failure for retry. These controls support ordinary replacement, unmount, and concurrent-instance containment; exceptional partial-initialization behavior was not runtime-verified.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Add replacement integration contracts for remote-resource rejection, sanitization before connection, MathML namespace restrictions, and teardown across source changes and failures. These would make the security guarantees explicit when the renderer dependency changes, rather than relying solely on its current implementation.

Add a browser test at the Pele SVG sanitization boundary.

ChatMarkdown.browser.test.tsx mocks MermaidDiagram, and the surviving security tests cover Markdown and generic HTML only. They do not execute load.pele.mount(..., { sanitize: sanitizeDiagramSvg }). Add a focused browser test that mounts the real component with an untrusted Pele-rendered SVG and asserts that scripts, event handlers, navigation/resource attributes, and any supported HTML-label content are removed. Do not restore the obsolete MathML assertions.

Hey @maria-rcks, are there any plans for Mermaid on mobile? Right now Android/iOS show raw code, while desktop renders the diagrams.

**Full Changelog**: pingdotgg/t3code@v0.1.1-nightly.20261020.3438...v0.1.2-nightly.20261021.3457

Upstream release: https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/releases/tag/v0.1.2-nightly.20261021.3457
aorwall added a commit to aorwall/t3code that referenced this pull request Oct 21, 2026
Merges `pingdotgg/t3code` `main` at `e64766c56a` (367 commits from
`143ab1606d`) into the fork. It branches from `main`; no other merge PR
is open.

## Numbers

- Landed: 2630 files from `git diff --stat HEAD^1 HEAD`, against 2629 in
the upstream range. The gap:
- Kept deleted: `pair.ts`, `pair.test.ts` and
`useDiscoveredLocalServers.test.ts`.
- Kept as fork files: `branding.test.ts` and
`addBrowserSurface.test.ts`.
- Extra on the merge side: four ported fork browser tests,
`fork/ThreadParentLine.tsx` and `inventory.json`.
- Fork delta: 812 files, down from 817.

## Conflicts (40, each by its preflight verdict)

- **Upstream's test prune (pingdotgg#22557):** upstream's deletions win,
fork-only tests stay, and fork adaptations of deleted upstream tests are
dropped.
- Upstream's deletion accepted for the `ThreadDetailsPrRows`,
`PreviewEmptyState`, `previewEmptyStateLogic`,
`projectScriptEditor.permissions` and `terminalSessionAvailability`
tests.
- Four fork browser tests are ported to the new
`require-disposable-render` pattern: ThreadForkDialog,
MoatlessArtifactChip, PreviewView.frame and MobileSidebarDrawer.
- **`threadRoutes.ts`, `ThreadRouteView.tsx`, `ChatView.tsx`:** take
upstream's `unlistedThreadDetail` (pingdotgg#19724), plus three fork changes:
  - An unlisted thread is "missing" once its subscription has failed.
- A closed thread is not redirected by `archivedAt`, because it is
absent from a Moatless listing and still opens by URL.
  - `onOpenRelatedThread` shows its toast only for a deleted shell.

The `unlisted-thread-adoption` inventory entry now owns
`threadRoutes.test.ts` and `ChatView.tsx`.
- **`AGENTS.md` (`decide`):** kept the fork bullet and appended
upstream's test rules and browser-test section.
- **Upstream's change with the fork delta re-stated:** `BranchToolbar`
(`showWorkspaceControls`), `GitActionsControl`, `ChatOverlayHosts`,
`FilePreviewPanel`, `projectFilesQueryState`, `usePreviewSession` (on
upstream's `inactiveAtom`) and `useThreadActions`.
- **`getSidebarForkParentThreadId`:** upstream removed it, so it moves
into `fork/ThreadParentLine.tsx`.
- **New inventory entries:** the `branding-test` path policy and the
`preview-session-use-atom-value` duplicate-add exception.
- **Sweep:** 19 owned-concern hits, all upstream-owned and taken as
upstream's. No new workflow.

## Feature classification

### Usable as-is
- Mermaid rendering through pele (pingdotgg#21472) and project icon previews
(pingdotgg#20372).
- Dialog and composer polish, PR panel fixes and centred tables.
- The Waiting thread state (pingdotgg#21500), which shows once the backend sends
`blockedOnThreadWait`.
- The even-pace tick on Limits (pingdotgg#22408).

### Unsupported in Moatless / needs implementation
- `device.easAccount` and EAS Simulator device hosts (pingdotgg#21841–pingdotgg#21846).
Added to the `UnsupportedMethodError` union, and the Integrations page
that holds them is already flag-gated.
- `projects.listIgnoredFiles` and the `ignoredFileListing` capability,
which "Add project to another machine" uses (pingdotgg#22180). Added to the
union. The dialog falls back to tracked files only while the capability
is absent.
- `pullRequests.changeBreakdown` (pingdotgg#22189, pingdotgg#22255). Its union already
carries `UnsupportedMethodError`, and the tooltip drops the split when
the call fails.
- T3 Connect reachability (pingdotgg#22172).
- Scheduled-task webhook filters and dedupe (pingdotgg#22194, pingdotgg#22234).
- `lastEventLoopStall` (pingdotgg#22213) and the `previewClose` scope (pingdotgg#22156).
- `compactIdleThreads` and `autoCompactThreshold` (pingdotgg#21682).
- MCP diff tools (pingdotgg#15464), the install id (pingdotgg#21506) and the writing-style
setting (pingdotgg#22203).

### Backend behavior to consider reproducing in Moatless
- **Settlement and waits:** `blockedOnThreadWait`, orphaned follow-ups
and delegated waits (pingdotgg#21499, pingdotgg#22581, pingdotgg#20037, pingdotgg#20025).
- **Stop and wake:** `latestRunStopRequested` stops a stopped
usage-limit thread from auto-resuming (pingdotgg#21114). A wake run settles when
the provider never opens the wake turn (pingdotgg#19196). Snooze survives a run's
completion (pingdotgg#22202, pingdotgg#17118).
- **Runs and shells:** run failures are persisted (pingdotgg#19646), and shell
updates coalesce for a slow client (pingdotgg#14859).
- **VCS:** bare repositories (pingdotgg#17340, pingdotgg#16688, pingdotgg#18152, pingdotgg#20368), stack
layers (pingdotgg#20415, pingdotgg#20388), VCS safety fixes (pingdotgg#15036, pingdotgg#19802) and PR
provider robustness (pingdotgg#18780).
- **Other:** update and restart safety (pingdotgg#22253), terminal and checkpoint
performance (pingdotgg#21242, pingdotgg#21291), resource metrics (pingdotgg#22122), provider
polling (pingdotgg#18851) and tool-token expiry (pingdotgg#18552, pingdotgg#19491).

`docs/fork/gaps.md` is updated under *Methods the backend does not
dispatch* and *Runtime fixes upstream made to its own server*.

## Verification

Full `verify.mjs` run: every check except `test` passes (duplicate-adds,
tripwires, resolution-check, unsupported-methods with ADD 2 / DROP 0 /
KEEP 2, lockfile, fmt, lint, typecheck and build).

Test failures and what was done about each:
- **Machine failures seen in earlier merges:** `shared` `AgentScope`,
`t3` `OrchestratorReplayFixtures` and `provider-opencode`
`OpenCodeServerLedger`. The `GitVcsDriver` and
`RepositoryIdentityResolver` partial-clone tests fail because of the
sandbox's `insteadOf` rewrite.
- **New and environmental:** `t3` `ProviderInstanceRegistry` reads the
sandbox's own `ANTHROPIC_*` and `CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR`. With those unset,
all 9 of its tests pass.
- **`web`:**
- The fork's `AppRoot.test.tsx` broke on upstream's new `useEffect`
(pingdotgg#20886). It now stubs `useEffect` and passes.
- Four browser files failed to import in the parallel run and pass
alone.
- **Playwright:** 1.60 wants chromium build 1223, which this sandbox
lacks. Browser tests ran against 1243 through a symlinked
`PLAYWRIGHT_BROWSERS_PATH`.
