Remove the unreferenced generic concrete-metadata generation path and the helpers used exclusively by it (nine private methods, 1,252 lines). The live concrete-instantiation path remains the source of generated metadata.
Validation: dotnet test --project tests/TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator.Tests --framework net10.0 — 337 passed, one skipped; no snapshot changes. git diff --check passed. Review follow-up corrects the XML summary left above GenerateGenericTypeInfo; that comment-only follow-up passed git diff --check and did not require a test rerun. Existing build warnings are tracked in #7410.
Streamlined test metadata generation while retaining generic type constraint validation. Pointer and function-pointer type arguments are rejected, and conversion-based constraints are accepted only for supported implicit conversions, including identity, reference, and eligible boxing conversions. These changes affect how test metadata is generated and validated; no changes to public declarations are reported.
Follow-up validation after #7594: refreshed its STA repeat-count/source-line snapshot; generator suite passed (339 passed, one skipped). macOS external-site timeout tracked in #7601.
Review follow-up: refreshed the .NET 8, .NET 9, and .NET Framework STA snapshots too. Targeted STA generator snapshot tests passed on actual .NET 8 and .NET 9 runtimes and on .NET 10. The .NET Framework snapshot exactly matches the received output downloaded from Windows run 41886467622; execution remains delegated to Windows CI. git diff --check passed. Remaining unused-helper cleanup is tracked in #7602.

The generator removes legacy concrete metadata-generation paths and per-test typed-invoker methods. It retains class-constraint validation and recursive type-parameter substitution. The STA-thread test snapshot records repeat counts of 10 and updated source line numbers.
Changes: Metadata generation cleanup
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Generic validation and concrete metadata cleanup src/TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator/Generators/TestMetadataGenerator.cs, tests/TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator.Tests/STAThreadTests.Test.DotNet10_0.verified.txt
The generator retains class-constraint validation, type-parameter substitution, and checks for substituted base-type, interface, and constructor constraints. It removes legacy concrete metadata-generation methods and per-test typed-invoker methods. The STA-thread snapshot changes repeat counts from 100 to 10 and advances recorded source line numbers by 5.
thomhurst/TUnit#7568 identifies additional unused private methods in TestMetadataGenerator.cs; the linked issue says those methods are outside the cleanup in this PR.
Possibly related PRs
thomhurst/TUnit#7570 removes other unused private metadata-generation entry points from the same generator file.
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 8f655

Explanation
[#7194] requires removal of the unreferenced GenerateGenericTestWithConcreteTypes chain. The whole-PR diff (merge base e6c7dee to head 8f65520) for src/TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator/Generators/TestMetadataGenerator.cs removes GenerateMetadataForConcreteInstantiation, GenerateTypedInvokers, GenerateConcreteTestInvoker, GenerateGenericTestWithConcreteTypes, and FormatTypeForRuntimeName. The reported file change is +87/-1334. This is consistent with the removal of the nine helpers named in the PR description. The visible hunks do not alter the live concrete-instantiation path. The diff output was truncated at 16000 bytes, so the removal of GenerateConcreteTestMetadata and GenerateConcreteMetadataWithFilteredDataSources, and the absence of remaining call sites, were not directly observed. The reported test run (339 passed, one skipped) supports the expected outcome. The STAThreadTests verified snapshot change (RepeatAttribute 100 to 10, line numbers +5) does not come from the dead-code removal. The commit history shows it follows #7594, which is already in the merge base and changed the STA test source. The snapshot refresh therefore reflects a main-branch source change, not a generator output change caused by this PR.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The PR changes two paths. (1) TestMetadataGenerator.cs: the visible hunks remove dead generic-concrete metadata code targeted by [#7194]. Added blocks such as ValidateClassTypeConstraints and SubstituteTypeParameters appear to be relocated existing helpers, consistent with the earlier review and the AI summary. The truncated diff prevents full line-by-line confirmation. (2) tests/TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator.Tests/STAThreadTests.Test.DotNet10_0.verified.txt: this snapshot refresh updates RepeatAttribute counts from 100 to 10 and source line numbers by +5 for 15 entries. It matches the #7594 change to the STA test source, which is already in the merge base. The refresh keeps the generator test suite consistent after the rebase. It is a support change for the rebased branch, not an unrelated behavior change. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

A rabbit checks the generator’s trail, Old metadata paths no longer prevail. Constraint checks remain in place, Ten repeats appear in the snapshot space. New line numbers mark each test, The rabbit hops away to rest.
Deletion-only PR confined to TestMetadataGenerator.cs (about 1,252 lines, 12 private methods). I checked it as follows:
None of the removed entry points (GenerateMetadataForConcreteInstantiation, GenerateGenericTestWithConcreteTypes, GenerateConcreteTestMetadata*, GenerateTypedInvokers, GenerateConcreteTestInvoker, FormatTypeForRuntimeName, ExtractTypeArgumentSets) is referenced anywhere in src on the PR head.
ValidateClassTypeConstraints and SubstituteTypeParameters are still called from the live path (around lines 942, 1148, 1188 and 1434 of the head file). The head file still defines each of them, so nothing is left dangling.
The PR description reports the generator snapshot tests pass with no .verified.txt changes. That fits dead-code removal, since generated output is unchanged. CI should confirm the build.
No design concerns. Removing the unreferenced path shrinks a 10k-line file and takes away a second copy of the generic-instantiation logic that could drift from the live one. LGTM.
This is a deletion-only cleanup, and I found no problems.
I grepped pr-head/src for all twelve removed method names. GenerateMetadataForConcreteInstantiation, GenerateTypedInvokers, GenerateConcreteTestInvoker, FormatTypeForRuntimeName, GenerateGenericTestWithConcreteTypes, ExtractTypeArgumentSets, GenerateConcreteTestMetadata, GenerateConcreteMetadataWithFilteredDataSources and GenerateConcreteTestMetadataForNonGeneric have no remaining references.
Four names still appear in the source, but they are different surviving definitions and not dangling calls. ValidateClassTypeConstraints and SatisfiesTypeConstraint are still defined in TestMetadataGenerator.cs and used on the live path. SubstituteTypeParameters has two overloads in that file, one of which has the signature that was removed, and the live callers use whichever one fits. CompilationExtensions in the analyzers has its own separate version.
Generated output should not change, since the code was unreachable. The PR reports no snapshot changes and 337 generator tests passing, which is consistent with that.
I did not run the tests or a build myself. I relied on the grep and the PR's reported test run.
The repo guide wants both the source-generator and reflection modes to behave the same for metadata collection. Removing dead generator code leaves the reflection mode alone, so that concern does not apply here.
Approving in spirit. Once CI is green, this is good to merge.
Marked ready after confirming positive Claude and Codex verdicts on 162b00e and the resolved review thread. Promotion kept the head unchanged. Waiting for the ready-for-review Claude run https://github.com/thomhurst/TUnit/actions/runs/41788317575; read its verdict and arm auto-merge with scripts/Enable-AutoMerge.ps1 after it passes.
Review: LGTM. This is a pure dead-code removal (about 1,250 lines, 12 private methods) in TestMetadataGenerator.cs.
I grepped the PR head for each removed method name. The only matches left are the ValidateClassTypeConstraints, SubstituteTypeParameters and SatisfiesTypeConstraint definitions, which are still defined and used elsewhere (for example lines 942 and 1188), plus a different live GenerateConcreteTestInvokerBody. Nothing references the other deleted members.
Everything removed is private static, so there is no public API or snapshot impact. The PR description reports 337 source-generator tests passing with no snapshot changes. I did not build or run the tests myself.
The XML summary above GenerateGenericTypeInfo is fixed.
I have no design concerns. Removing the unreferenced second path leaves one metadata-generation flow, which is easier to keep consistent with the engine's reflection mode.
The unused chain includes GenerateMetadata, GenerateDependencies, GenerateDataSources, GeneratePropertyInjections, GeneratePropertyDataSources, WriteSourceLocationMetadata, AppendOptionalFactoryParameters, GenerateGenericTypeInfo, GenerateGenericMethodInfo, GenerateGenericParameterConstraints, GenerateTypeReference, and GetOpenGenericTypeName.
Keep GetTestAttributes, because PreGenerateCreateAttributesCode still calls it.

This is a deletion-only change to TestMetadataGenerator.cs (+72/−1325). It is a good cleanup.
What I checked
I grepped pr-head/src for the removed entry points: GenerateMetadataForConcreteInstantiation, GenerateTypedInvokers, GenerateConcreteTestInvoker, FormatTypeForRuntimeName and GenerateGenericTestWithConcreteTypes. No call sites remain. The only hit is the still-live GenerateConcreteTestInvokerBody, which is a different method.
The PR says the generator snapshot tests pass with no .verified.txt changes (337 passed, 1 skipped). That fits dead-code removal, because generated output is unchanged.
I did not build the PR head or re-run the tests myself, so the build and test results are the author's, not mine. CI will confirm them.
Notes
The +72 additions are mostly the XML summary fix above GenerateGenericTypeInfo, per the description. I did not review those lines line by line.
This does not affect Native AOT, trimming, or the engine reflection path. The reflection mode in TUnit.Engine is untouched, so the rule that both metadata modes behave identically is not affected.
Nothing is left to follow up on. A 1,300-line deletion in one file is easy to review because the only check needed is that nothing still references the removed methods.
Earlier wait 41860418825 ended cancelled. #7584’s newer Windows engine run 41861668910 failed with the unresolved #7554 reflection-session hang. Followed both linked items under their own locks and inspected the successful diagnostic artifact from 41860407100. Its top-frame registers do not identify the ThreadNative_Start target, so pushed 0e007a0 to #7584 to unwind starter frames and capture target states/handles. Actionlint, PowerShell parsing, mocked command generation, and diff checks passed; no engine tests ran locally.
New analysis: https://github.com/thomhurst/TUnit/actions/runs/41868890313. Read start-targets.txt before diagnosing or changing execution code. #7554 remains unimplemented; #7570 is merged but does not supersede this PR. No finished-parent closure, stale acceptance criteria, human choice or external release gate applies. An unchanged-head rerun or another rebase cannot repair this repeated fresh-main failure. No on-hold label applies. This unit pushed diagnostic progress to #7584 rather than deferring on the cancelled run. All acquired locks released at unit end.
Review of #7569: Remove unused concrete metadata generation chain
Verdict: looks good. I found no blocking issues.
The PR is a dead-code removal in TestMetadataGenerator.cs (+87 / −1334). A grep of src on the PR head finds no remaining references to the removed entry points: GenerateMetadataForConcreteInstantiation, GenerateConcreteTestMetadata and GenerateGenericTypeInfo.
The helpers that remain (ValidateClassTypeConstraints, SubstituteTypeParameters, SatisfiesTypeConstraint, HasConstraintViolation) are still used by the live path. The additions are mostly these methods being re-located, plus the handling of nested constructed types, arrays and pointer type arguments.
The PR description reports the source generator tests passing (337 passed, 1 skipped) with no snapshot changes. That is the right evidence for a no-behaviour-change refactor. I could not run the build or tests in my review sandbox, so I haven't confirmed it myself. Please make sure CI is green, in particular the generator snapshot tests.
TestMetadataGenerator.cs is still very large. Moving the constraint validation and substitution helpers into their own internal static class, for example GenericConstraintValidator, would make them testable in isolation and keep this file focused on emission.
Nice cleanup: removing 1.2k lines of unreferenced generator code lowers the maintenance burden.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Follow-up validation after #7594: refreshed its STA repeat-count/source-line snapshot; generator suite passed (339 passed, one skipped). macOS external-site timeout tracked in #7601.
Review follow-up: refreshed the .NET 8, .NET 9, and .NET Framework STA snapshots too. Targeted STA generator snapshot tests passed on actual .NET 8 and .NET 9 runtimes and on .NET 10. The .NET Framework snapshot exactly matches the received output downloaded from Windows run 41886467622; execution remains delegated to Windows CI.
git diff --checkpassed. Remaining unused-helper cleanup is tracked in #7602.
