When a T3 Connect connection fails, users see one cut-off red line like "T3 Connect · Reconnecting: Relay could not reach the environment endpoint (endpoint_request_f...". It does not say which part failed or what to do, so people file bug reports. In one real case the host used a Tailscale exit node that blocked cloudflared, and the client could not tell that apart from "T3 Code on the host is not answering".

How

  • Relay names the cause. RelayEnvironmentEndpointUnavailableError and the getEnvironmentStatus response get optional endpointFailure and endpointStatus fields (additive, so old clients and old relays keep working). The relay classifies from the response status, Cloudflare's error code: NNNN body, and the transport error:
    • tunnel_down: 530, or body code 1033 (no cloudflared connector)
    • origin_unreachable: 502 / 503 (tunnel answered, T3 Code behind it did not)
    • dns: body code 1016, or ENOTFOUND / EAI_AGAIN
    • tls: 525 / 526, or certificate errors
    • refused: 521, or ECONNREFUSED
    • timeout: 504 / 522 / 524, ETIMEDOUT, or the health check timing out
    • invalid_response: any other status, or a body we could not decode
    • unknown: everything else
  • One shared model in client-runtime. Connection errors now carry an optional hop (this device, T3 Connect, the host's tunnel, T3 Code on the host), via (relay or direct), failureCause, and httpStatus, set where the error is created. presentConnectionDiagnosis turns the connection state into a headline that names the failed part, the hops in order (later hops are "Not checked"), 1-3 steps, and a facts list. When this device cannot reach a tunnel the relay already reached, it blames this device, not the host ([Bug]: T3 Connect setup timeout blames the remote environment when this device lost its network #17629). Web and mobile both use it.
  • Web and desktop: the saved environment row shows the full headline, then retrying in Ns · attempt N · Details. Details shows the hops, what to try, the facts, and Retry now, Copy diagnostics (one plain-text block for bug reports), and Add direct route (opens the existing Add route flow) for relay-only environments. The countdown is its own small component, so only that text re-renders each second.
  • Mobile: the environment list row shows the headline. The environment detail row shows hops, steps, facts, and Copy diagnostics next to the existing Reconnect button.
  • ChatView: the "is reconnecting / offline" banner shows the headline as its description.

The host-side probe (exit node name, port 7844 check) is a separate change. Once it reports to the relay, this view can show the host's own diagnosis too.

Screenshots

The failing Mac mini row is simulated with a stubbed connection state (relay error tunnel_down, HTTP 530). The empty-state text below the row comes from the stub.

Verification

  • vp test for the new relay classifier and connector tests (a 530 error code: 1033 response gives tunnel_down on connect and status), the client-runtime diagnosis tests, and the connection, rpc, authorization, relay, and infra/relay suites.
  • tsc-rs clean for web, mobile, client-runtime, contracts, and relay. Lint clean on changed files.
  • Web row checked in a local dev server with headless screenshots. Mobile was typechecked but not run on a device.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This change introduces a cross-platform connection-diagnostics capability spanning client error mapping, relay response classification, API contracts, and web/mobile UI. It changes existing failure-path behavior and adds retry, route, and diagnostic-copy interactions, so the scope and runtime impact merit human review.

Environments with both direct and relay routes may show a misleading tunnel-offline headline while a direct attempt is still in progress. The effect is limited to wording and the hop list in the diagnostic UI. The relay-HTTP-error misdiagnosis is fixed.

Reuse one disclosure toggle instead of copying the classes again.

The "Details" button repeats the raw <button> class list that ConnectionsSettings.tsx already uses for the "Routes" and "Permissions" toggles. That list is inline-flex items-center gap-0.5 rounded-sm outline-none hover:text-foreground focus-visible:ring-1 …, plus the same rotating ChevronRightIcon. This change adds a third copy of the same treatment.

The Web UI guide says: "When a call site repeats a treatment another one already uses, make it a variant or a slot on the shared component." Extract a small DisclosureToggle component with expanded, onToggle and children props, and use it at all three call sites. Alternatively, add a variant to an existing inline-button primitive.

As per path instructions, "Compose or extend shared components and slots instead of duplicating markup and styling."

* fix(shared): accept a pasted ChatGPT callback URL that is missing http:// (pingdotgg#21750)

* fix(server): the background service picks up JAVA_HOME from the login shell (pingdotgg#22856)

* fix(server): answered questions say "already answered" instead of "not found" (pingdotgg#22850)

* fix(desktop): an abandoned browser sign-in no longer blocks T3 Connect for 3 minutes (pingdotgg#22903)

On desktop, an abandoned browser sign-in blocked every T3 Connect sign-in for 3 minutes. A new attempt now replaces the stale Clerk flow, and a Cancel bar resets the sheet. Takeover of pingdotgg#22708.

* fix(server): agents get a short, current model list instead of a 55k-character catalog dump (pingdotgg#22889)

Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* docs(agents): proof for a bug fix depends on the bug (pingdotgg#23008)

* fix(server): removing a worktree on Windows no longer deletes what its junctions point to (pingdotgg#21099)

* perf(web): a streaming thread re-renders only its own sidebar row (pingdotgg#22730)

Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* refactor(web): the add environment dialog owns its form state (pingdotgg#22686)

Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* fix(desktop): use Clerk's upstream fix for abandoned browser sign-ins (pingdotgg#23038)

* feat: show automation messages as compact timeline rows (pingdotgg#22638)

* fix(shared): the mobile client's release reads stay on upstream's repository

apps/mobile is upstream's client and checks upstream's releases, so the
release page and index it shares with the CLI default to upstream. Satellite's
own CLI update passes RELEASE_REPOSITORY.

* fix(satellite): reject retired migration id 100 and split the release index helper

runSatelliteMigrations now refuses Revdoc's retired id 100, so the rule no
longer lives only in a comment. Satellite's CLI calls releaseIndexPageUrl with
its repository; cliReleaseIndexPageUrl remains the upstream wrapper the
unmodified mobile client imports. Comment fixes from the review.
