Summary

  • check-this-repo "What it checks" step 1 now reads the live block by its shape. A vcs: archive tree is the one the hub bootstrap keeps: branch: null there does not mean detached, a live.commit behind main or null is the finding, and re-running bootstrap.sh --skills or bootstrap.ps1 -Skills is the fix, with --dir or -Dir where the tree was kept outside the default. The git case is keyed on no vcs and a non-null commit, and every other shape is an unregistered or unreadable channel.
  • merge-and-release step 7 states that an archive live channel holds what the bootstrap fetched until the bootstrap's skills action runs again, which that step does not do.
  • Distributions are regenerated with scripts/build_dist.py, and --check is clean.

The same framing in docs/host-setup.md "Fleet Skills Install" is filed as #2236.

Closes on promotion: #1772

check-this-repo and merge-and-release framed the Claude Code live
channel only as a registered git checkout. A bootstrapped host registers
the tree the bootstrap keeps, which --report describes as vcs archive
with branch null, so both skills now state that case and name re-running
the bootstrap's skills action as what refreshes it.

live_channel emits vcs only for an archive tree, so the git case is now
the otherwise branch. The archive case also covers a null commit and a
tree kept under a non-default --dir, which a rerun has to name.

A live block with no vcs is a git checkout only where it carries a
commit. An unregistered channel, a failed listing, and a directory git
cannot read are their own shapes rather than a detached checkout.

Copilot review overview

🟢 Approval recommended

It is a documentation-only Skill update whose new text I verified as accurate against skills_install.py and the bootstrap scripts, consistent across all generated copies, and conformant with the repository's prose conventions.

Review effort: Balanced
Findings: None

What changed in this PR

This documentation-only change updates two agent Skills to describe the Claude Code "live" skills channel when it is served by an archive tree (a tree the host bootstrap keeps) rather than a git checkout. Since a bootstrapped host registers the plugin against a tree that has no git, skills_install.py --report describes that channel as live.vcs: archive with branch: null, and the prior text framed the live channel only as a git checkout. The two Skills now read the live block by shape so an agent diagnoses and remediates the archive case correctly (re-running bootstrap.sh --skills / bootstrap.ps1 -Skills) instead of treating branch: null as a detached checkout.

Changes:

  • check-this-repo step 1 now branches on live shape: vcs: archive (serves the kept tree; null/behind live.commit is the finding; bootstrap re-run is the fix, with --dir/-Dir where kept off-default), the git case (no vcs + non-null commit), and a catch-all that reads reason.
  • merge-and-release step 7 states that an archive live channel holds what the bootstrap fetched until the bootstrap's skills action runs again, which that step does not do.
  • Distributions regenerated: the .github/skills/ and .claude-plugin/fleet-skills/ copies and the two .claude-plugin source digests were updated from the .agents/skills/ source.

I verified the new prose against the implementation: live_channel() returns vcs: archive, branch: null, and a nullable commit for bootstrap trees (scripts/skills_install.py:413-420); --dir/-Dir names the parent of the kept skills-tree directory (host-setup/bootstrap.sh:67, host-setup/bootstrap.ps1:112); and --skills/-Skills flags exist. The three SKILL.md copies are byte-identical and the prose is ASCII-clean, free of mid-sentence semicolons, and within the ~100-column wrap used across .agents/skills/.
