New worktrees always landed in <T3 home>/worktrees, so users had no way to put them on a bigger or external drive.

This adds a per-machine Worktree location setting (worktreesDirectory) at the top of Settings → Storage → Worktrees. It accepts any absolute path, including other drives (D:\worktrees, /Volumes/External/wt, ~/worktrees). Empty keeps the old default.

  • New worktrees are created at <location>/<repo>/<branch>; existing worktrees stay put.
  • A path that isn't absolute on the server (e.g. D:\… synced to a Linux machine via "all environments") fails worktree creation with a message pointing back to Settings → Storage instead of silently falling back.
  • Storage cleanup and the review diff's workspace-bound check accept both the default and custom folder, so changing the location doesn't strand old worktrees.
  • The row is gated on a new worktreesDirectory environment capability and hidden in project scope.

Not covered: mobile (no Storage page), the MCP environment preferences tool, and a folder picker (plain text keeps remote servers working).

Tests: new GitVcsDriverCore case for custom and relative locations; ReviewService and storageCleanup suites pass.

Evidence

Web, dev server on cups. The Storage page before and after setting the location; the row shows a reset action once it's set:

Default Custom location set
Storage settings with Worktree location empty Storage settings with Worktree location set to /home/julius/wt-demo-external

Then a new thread in New worktree mode, sent from the web UI, provisioned its worktree in the custom folder, and the provider session started there:

$ git -C ~/wt-demo-repo worktree list
/home/julius/wt-demo-repo ee3039d [main]
/home/julius/wt-demo-external/wt-demo-repo/t3code-885ab081 ee3039d [t3code/885ab081]

provider-session.attached cwd=/home/julius/wt-demo-external/wt-demo-repo/t3code-885ab081

The test machine has a single disk, so the custom folder sits on the same drive. Other drives go through the same code path.

Adds a per-machine Worktree location setting under Settings → Storage.
Any absolute path works, including other drives (D:\worktrees, ~/worktrees).
Cleanup and review path checks cover both the default and custom folders.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds a per-machine worktree location setting. The server uses current and previous configured locations for worktree creation, review-path validation, and cleanup. The Storage settings panel exposes the setting when connected environments support it.

Layer / File(s) Summary
Directory contract and creation
packages/contracts/src/settings.ts, packages/contracts/src/environment.ts, apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriver.ts, apps/server/src/worktreesDirectory.ts, apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriverCore.ts, apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriverCore.test.ts, apps/server/src/git/GitManager.ts, apps/server/src/environment/ServerEnvironment.ts
The settings contracts add current and previous worktree-directory fields. The Git driver resolves the configured directory and uses it to build a worktree path when no explicit path is provided. GitManager passes the setting to both worktree-creation flows, and the server descriptor advertises the capability.
Setting history and Storage UI
packages/shared/src/serverSettings.ts, packages/shared/src/serverSettings.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/settings/StorageSettings.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/settingsSearch.ts, docs/user/project-settings.md
Settings patches retain prior nonempty worktree directories when the current value changes. The Storage panel displays the setting for supported environments. Search and documentation describe the setting.
Managed-directory validation and cleanup
apps/server/src/review/ReviewService.ts, apps/server/src/review/ReviewService.test.ts, apps/server/src/storageCleanup.ts
Review-path validation accepts paths inside the workspace root or a managed worktree directory. Cleanup discovers available managed roots and checks worktree paths against them.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 677a7

The new worktree location setting now rejects a filesystem root, including through a symlink, when reviewing diffs or cleaning up worktrees. An unavailable custom or previous folder no longer blocks review or cleanup in the default location. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains.

64-79: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Input is uncontrolled with defaultValue and a state-derived key.

The input remounts when settings.worktreesDirectory or mixed changes. This hides the stale-value risk, but a remount while the user types discards the draft. A background settings update, such as a refresh from another client, triggers this remount. Use a controlled value with local draft state. Sync the draft from settings.worktreesDirectory when no edit is in progress.

Based on learnings: form inputs whose value can change after mount should be controlled with value, not defaultValue.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This adds a cross-cutting worktree-location capability spanning settings, VCS creation, review validation, cleanup, and UI rather than a small isolated change. Unresolved concerns remain around custom-location session discovery and symlinked filesystem roots, including a substantive security/privacy question in the creation path.

You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more.

… roots

- Remember previous custom locations so cleanup and review diffs still cover
worktrees left there after the setting changes.
- Reject filesystem roots as a location; they would widen the review boundary
  to the whole drive.
- Cleanup compares canonical paths (symlinked drives work) and skips only an
unavailable root instead of the whole sweep.
- Give the location row its own environment-scoped search entry.

Re the CodeRabbit nitpick on the uncontrolled Worktree location input: keeping it. It follows the existing pattern in BranchNamingSettings (keyed defaultValue, commit on blur). The remount only happens when the saved value itself changes from another client mid-edit, where showing the newer saved value is reasonable. Not worth a second input pattern here.

Upstream: choose where new worktrees are created (pingdotgg#16231), secret requests
through a private card (pingdotgg#15907), PR watch details/stop, webhook service
refactor, outbox/PR-cache pruning, fewer git processes.

Fork reconciliation (prefer upstream): the fork's `worktreeBaseDirectory`
setting, capability and Worktrees row are removed in favor of upstream's
`worktreesDirectory` (Settings → Storage). No machine had the fork setting
set, so nothing is migrated. Kept from the fork: the home-containment check
(now on worktreesDirectory), relative worktree paths resolved against the
repo cwd, and the agent-session scanner treating every managed worktree root
as T3-owned. Upstream's review test uses a root symlink since "/" is refused.

…e new preview tools (#68)

Follow-ups from T3 Code nightly 0.0.46-nightly.20261006.2735.

## What changes

- **The worktree audit finds T3 worktrees wherever T3 creates them.** T3
now lets users choose where new worktrees go (pingdotgg/t3code#16231).
`worktree-audit.sh` reads `worktreesDirectory` and
`previousWorktreesDirectories` from T3's settings file at `<T3
home>/userdata/settings.json`, where `<T3 home>` is `T3CODE_HOME` or
`~/.t3`. It still counts the default `<T3 home>/worktrees`. It matches
T3's handling. Values are trimmed with JavaScript's whitespace set, and
relative paths and filesystem roots are ignored. Roots and candidates
resolve physically, so a symlinked root still matches.
`previousWorktreesDirectories` counts only when it is an array of
strings, and jq and the Python fallback agree. `--t3-worktrees` or
`T3_WORKTREES` replaces the settings roots for one run. The script still
deletes nothing.
- **The runtime names T3's new preview tools.** `t3/runtime.md` adds
`preview_hover`, `preview_drag`, `preview_select`, `preview_upload`, and
`preview_dialog` to the control-ui mapping and the web verification
step, with when to use each.

## How it was verified

- Tests cover a custom root, previous roots, a symlinked root, malformed
settings under each parser, ASCII and Unicode padding, and the
overrides.
- A fresh agent given only the updated cleanup playbook described the
managed roots and override precedence correctly, reading nothing else.
- A reviewer from another model family checked the script against T3's
source over three rounds. It found the symlink, malformed-array, and
trim mismatches, and confirmed each fix.
- `python3 -m unittest discover -s tests` passes. `python3
scripts/build.py` leaves no diff.

* chore(contracts): take the Moatless V2 backend into the upstream merge

Regenerate the threads.getShell fixture as a V2 row, decode it as the RPC
layer does, drop four UnsupportedMethodError entries the V2 backend now
serves, and reconcile docs/fork/gaps.md with soaplabs/moatless#1068.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* test(contracts): decode a Moatless V2 thread projection fixture

The fixture comes from the moatless feat/t3code-v2-timeline-and-sessions
branch and holds every timeline item kind it translates tool calls into,
its plans, and the provider rows that let a client steer a running turn.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* ci: run the contracts tests in the Typecheck workflow

Its Moatless fixtures are the one check that a backend response decodes

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* ci: run the contracts tests before the typecheck

The runner loses contact during pnpm typecheck, which skipped the
fixture decodes queued after it.
